Guns have had alt-fire modes for about a decade and a half now. Stop pretending it's innovative when the assault rifle in your favorite FPS shoots grenades. You aren't fooling anybody.

honestgamer - April 19, 2010 (09:31 AM) Heh heh. Remember the deployable turret gun in Perfect Dark for the N64? Good times. Pretty sure it wasn't a new concept then, either, but it sure felt innovative to me! It felt innovative to my wife when she tried to get away with camping in the facility and I snuck around threw the pipes and threw a laptop gun at the wall near her and it took her out in a flash. Ah, the memories... |

Suskie - April 19, 2010 (10:37 AM) Funny you mention Perfect Dark, as I've been playing the Xbox 360 remake recently and admiring how creative that game's alt-fire modes were even by today's standards. Remember how the grenades had "pinball mode"? |

overdrive - April 19, 2010 (12:30 PM) Considering you're judging the contest where my Snowblind review is in and I do mention primary/alternate fire, I do wish to clarify two things. 1. I don't recall praising this for being "innovative". I was praising it for adding variety to the way you can get your kill on, but not treating it like the wheel was re-invented. 2. Unless every single FPS released in the past 15 years has primary/alternate fire for guns (which isn't true), it probably is noteworthy to mention it when a game implements this feature and it serves to add to my enjoyment of the proceedings. |

WilltheGreat - April 19, 2010 (03:24 PM) OD: Don't worry, man. Your review was not guilty of this, it just made me think of another review I'd read recently that was. Also I rather liked your Snowblind review, for reasons you'll see shortly. |

overdrive - April 19, 2010 (03:28 PM) That's cool. I just saw this post and noticed the "gun that also shoots grenades" line and was like..."Wait a minute...I mentioned that IN MY REVIEW!!!!" So this means I'm not getting a 20/100 for mentioning that, right? |

zippdementia - April 20, 2010 (12:40 AM) Ah, Perfect Dark. We used to set up "zombie mode" with the bots, where we'd give them super strength and knives and then hide out in bunkers around the map, using Laptop guns to fend them off. Which is essentially a mode of play in Call of Duty, now. So yeah... PD was waaay ahead of its time. I also enjoyed that it was an FPS with a story and some incredibly good (and ridiculously varied) level design. It also let you affect how hard a mission would be depending on how many of the side missions you completed. Very cool stuff. My only complaint is that it used to give me massive migraines. |
