Friggin FF7
June 07, 2009

I swear the next time I see a 10/10 review for FF7 in the random box I'm going to go postal.

That, or write a long-overdue bash review.

HG already has an FFVII bash. But feel free to pen a second.

I'm thinking about downloading FFVII to my PSP. I always liked the game, but never saw it as the genre-changing event so many do. You can blame that on it being the first RPG for many people, I suppose.

I think it's a decent game but I do agree it's probably the most overrated video game ever.

It's nowhere near the best RPG ever, let alone best video game ever.

Edit: I think you really need to post that bash FF7 review, because the other guy is a complete ass.

He spoils a major plotline in the opening and openly ridicules people who don't know about it already.

Doesn't that kind of contradict himself? If he hates the game so much, then what was he doing playing it long enough to reach that point?

His review sucks. He just rambles and doesn't really make any good points.

Haha. That bash review is a joke review. That's not surprising.

I like FF7, but I think it's topped by FF8, FF9 and FF10.

I think part of the "genre-changing event" perception comes from two legit reasons, one of which is great and one of which I'm more neutral towards.

1. It was the game that made RPGs mainstream and got tons of them released at least in America (probably Europe as well, as other than Terranigma or however it's spelled, I don't recall too many adventures/RPGs that were released in your region that weren't in mine). Sure, one game or another would have done that eventually, but FF VII was the one that accomplished that.

2. It also was the game that introduced a very cinematic style of handling the plots with lots of dialogue and cinema scenes. On one hand, that's cool because it showed RPGs could look appealing and might have helped open them up for a section of people who might never have thought about playing the retro ones with their blocky sprite graphics. I know my best friend had only borrowed my Chrono Trigger previously, but after seeing FF VII, he started getting into RPGs. On the other hand, whenever you're playing an RPG and realize you've done barely anything but watch cinema and talked to people for an hour......, well you can thank FF VII for that (remember the 30-45 minutes of pure plot exposition when you go to the inn in that town after leaving Midgar?).

The internet ruined Final Fantasy VII.

Why does everyone think that review was a joke? A "fair" Suskie review would probably give the game a 5/10, but the one I wrote was more or less my chance to unleash all of my inner hatred toward the title, without having to worry about professionalism or maintaining a reputation. So, in a way, it was the most honest review for FFVII I could have written.

Lassarina's staff review for the game didn't exactly heap the praise upon the game, either:

I think that the site does a reasonably good job of covering the bases.

Honestly, I think it's one of the greatest games to ever be made. I'm playing through it again now and it STILL works. Great setting, great characters...

... and people didn't start hating it until AFTER it got so much praise. What are you gonna do? That's to be expected.
