All-Gen Short List *RESET*
November 22, 2018

My wife and I continue to explore various video games on various systems. All too often we either come across old games that appeal to us that we were unaware of, or a new game that appeals to us sneaks out and we have trouble tracking down. This happens generally after we return from the Portland Retro Gaming Expo each year. With all this in mind, I realized my previous "short list" was a mess! So I present you with a better organized, longer "short" list:

I have a short list of my own, as you know, but there are some games on your list I certainly wouldn't mind having myself: Einhander, Hoshigami, Secret of Evermore, Kirby Air Ride, the Battalion Wars games, and Nostalgia (which is actually on my list).

I'm actually pretty content for games I'm realistically going to able to own. I'd really like the GameCube and Wii Fire Emblem games, but they are way too expensive. Given how popular the series has become since then, I hold out hope that Nintendo will make them available digitally or as a remastered edition on Switch.

I'm just glad I bought those games already. Fire Emblem on GameCube I got right near launch, and the Wii one I managed to find on eBay like a year or two after release for the standard $50. Shortly after that, their prices both started climbing. Stuff like that explains why I try to buy everything that interests me near launch, but then I sometimes get stung by something like an Assassin's Creed game that drops 50% in price 3 months after release even when it's apparently selling well and critics and fans love it. And now Sony seems to think the right price for most of its PS4 stuff is $10 to $20, which is just bizarre. Anyway, I would love to see Nintendo show additional support for its older titles, but every time that happens, someone comes along to try to dunk on Nintendo for trotting out older content. I guess there's no scenario that's great for everyone.

Fun Fact: A few years ago I bought the three PS1 Spyro games and have gone through the first two and am planning to do the third in the near future. A couple days ago, I saw that those games have been re-released for modern consoles with upgraded graphics and the like. And I felt temptation. I remember being amazed by the first game from a demo disc I'd gotten in a magazine that had a stage or two in it and when I saw a trailer for the remake, it kind of brought that feeling back.

And then I remembered the backlog, that I just bought a PS4 and that my backlog wasn't going to be getting any smaller all that quickly because of that, so I decided to back off the "gotta get everything that looks cool" train.

There are of course more games than these I’d like to own, but these are just some with greater interest as of right now lol

Regarding fire emblem on GameCube, I was lucky enough to get it at a garage sale for real cheap, the Wii game I got from a friends game shop. It’s still possible to get them at a decent price, don’t give up!

I too saw the Spyro re-releases, I however caved and picked it up. The Spyro games are some of my favorite platformers, and I also enjoy making comparisons between originals and remakes. lol
