Bite-Sized Review // Hacknet
April 03, 2016

By Wolf

Developed by a one-man studio called Team Fractal Alligator, Hacknet is a terminal-based game that implements real UNIX codes and commands to bypass and/or shutdown firewalls, proxys, ports and the like. It does this to gain access to other people's' computers and eOS devices (the game's parody of smartphones) for their information or information in general, This allows them to do things such as retype false info, steal the information and expose it to light, or destroy the user's computer server.

The story is surprisingly good. To avoid spoilers, I'll keep it short. It involves a notorious hacker named Bit. He fails to reconnect to his system for 14 days, his failsafe kicks in, sending instructions in automated emails to you. It's up to you to find out why.

You can get jobs from different entities, such as CSEC, to receive hack codes and malware injectors to help you along your cyber hacking adventure. Sadly, unlike Uplink, you don't earn money and you can't upgrade your computer, RAM, CPU, etc.

Lots of little secrets are hidden here and there, like how some computers have little chat logs from other users for a fun read. The music is good; it has nice upbeat tempo to it.

Overall, it's a fun terminal-based hacker’s game with a modern day retouch.
