Hey!
January 09, 2009

Hey! Do you know what was a really bloody good game that no one talks about any more?

TimeSplitters 2.

Doesn't it look old today? Still, I reckon Team Fortress 2 may looked up to this one a little...

Brilliant, brilliant game.

Everyone's reaction bewilders me. While this wouldn't be ace at all now, as a console FPS at the time it was fantastic!

Even when it was released it was a good 5-6 years behind. I love arcade-style FPS (one of my favorite genres) but this one had so many problems to the point where it was nearly unplayable. The only reason it was received as well as it was is because at that point there was never a good FPS released on consoles (I guess people can argue Halo but I didn't like it). There's no way that game would be able to be released today.

I think the lack of decent console FPS-es definitely had something to do with it, yes. But the only severe problems that springs to mind with this one - totally from memory, you understand - are the naff checkpoint system and the stupid flying bugs in the Halo rip-off level. Less importantly, the fact that the single-player game lasted roughly thirty seconds, but that was never the focus of TimeSplitters 2, surely. Its multiplayer was devilishly good fun.

I still like it, you're all rubbish.

I haven't played TimeSplitters 2 for a very, very long time, but I remember the controls being awful. You had to press a button to bring up the on-screen target, if I remember rightly. If you didn't do this you had to rely on auto-aim. This set-up was OK for Goldeneye, but post-Halo (which TS2 was, I think) it's unacceptable.

Dunno. It's all nostalgia really. I had it on the Cubey McGee and don't remember any control issues. I just remember playing the fuck out of it, really.

It does look really shit for a game released in 2002 (I think?) though, doesn't it? It looks late-90s at best.
