As I laced up my boots this morning getting ready for work, I thought to myself "maybe I should try and write a game review, a full-fledged game review". I recently submitted some to the site and after reading some of the reviews that other good gamers submitted, I can understand why mine were not put up. They were too short! lol It has occurred to me that reviews take time and indulgence into the game, so basically just putting my everyday gameplaying thoughts and feeling into words. Duh!
*kneels to one knee* "Forgive me site gurus, for I knew not what I did! (which was, submit some very short reviews to the site that I put no long-term feeling and thoughts into!)"
Anyways, if I get some time in the next day or two I am definitely gonna give it a shot, maybe someone can provide some pointers to help a wannabe "critic" out...lol...anything could help!

Felix_Arabia - December 27, 2007 (08:57 AM) It's always nice to see someone new want to try their hand in reviewing. As for pointers, I'll gladly give you some. (1) Format: Essay reviews are the way to go. They tend to flow better than sectioned pieces, and they really allow you to be more descriptive in your writing. They're also quite organized, even though it may not appear to be the case by just giving the review a glance. (2) Content: A good way to go about your review when you're just starting out is to try and adequately describe what you do, see and hear, and always try to make a convincing argument that backs up your points. (3) A small list of things to avoid: - Ah, [game X] is . . . This isn't the best way to start things out because it sounds so cheesy. - Wow. Just wow. Saying something like this makes you seem less than credible since it's pretty cheesy, too. - I went to the game store and got [game X] and boy was I excited . . . This is a pretty cliched way to begin a review, and, honestly, no one cares how you got the game. - And now onto the review . . . Another cheesy line that makes the review sound stupid. - Rent/Buy Incredibly dumb section that gets even dumber when someone uses it for a retro game that is impossible to rent. - Gameplay is the most important aspect . . . Not always. - I want to be as fair and unbiased in this review for [game X] as possible because you should never let your opinion get in the way of your review . . . This is your review, so we're most interested in your opinion. Why anyone would think you're not giving your opinion in your own review baffles me. But there are many idiots at far less honest websites that go by this stupid way of thinking. That should be enough for you to look over for now. Of course if you're unsure about any of these points, I'll be glad to elaborate on them some more if you want. Good luck. |
