Another reason why the Wii sucks
September 25, 2006

It is very rare that I post about video games in my blog, because obviously people around here don’t care about them and only care about crappy music. Duh.

Anyways I was just linked to an interview on IGN about the Far Cry game coming out for the Wii. This game was originally released for the PC in 2004, a few months before Doom 3 and Half Life. It was later ported to Xbox, and then to the 360. The Xbox added a few new features, but took away a lot of what made the PC version great, such as the expansiveness and the challenge. It had plenty of flaws, but for the most part it was a good game. Probably a 7/10 if I ever get to reviewing it, but you won’t see that any time soon.

The above paragraph is completely irrelevant with the rest of this blog post. Sucks being you if you read it.

Anyways Far Cry is being released for the fourth or fifth time on the Wii. Now we (no pun intended) all know that the Wii is nowhere near as powerful as the PS3 or Xbox 360. We’ve also learned to accept what Nintendo’s doing with the controller. According to them the most important aspect of gaming is the gameplay, and that is where the Wii promises to deliver. The concept doesn’t appeal to me, but I respect this approach.

It’s underpowered, but Nintendo claims that it’s “more powerful than an Xbox” and “We can expect a game as beautiful as what we used to see on Xbox.” Now I didn’t believe this at first, because the interview was filled with screenshots of the new Far Cry game, which looks like total ass.

Here is a screenshot for Far Cry: Instincts from IGN, which was released in 2005 on Xbox (a system weaker than the Wii). Don’t forget that this is inferior to the PC version with all of the settings turned to max and HDR and AA/AF enabled.

The PC version owns this, but it’s still pretty good. It definitely shows what the Xbox is capable of.

Now here is a shot from the upcoming Wii version:

Wow, this is ugly. The original Halo looked MUCH better than this. Hell, this looks like an early PS2 game.

Here’s my point: Now I know gameplay is what matters, and a fun game with poor graphics is better than a good-looking game that’s not fun. But how can you claim that you can make Xbox-quality or better graphics and release crap like this? I know the Wii can’t replicate a 360 or PS3 game, but Nintendo, for crying out loud, at least use what you have and make an attempt to create a decent looking game. This is just a complete insult to consumers, especially since the same game has been released on an “inferior” system over a year ago.

Way to go, Nintendo.

Holy fucking shit, that is ugly. I watched some gameplay videos of Metroid Prime 3 earlier and even that game looked like it belonged on GameCube. CONSLUSION: Nintendo doesn't know what the fuck they're doing anymore.

P.S. - More music blog posts plz!! I just got Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction!!

My eye is drawn to the on-screen compass. Notice how the XBox's is all curved and pretty. Then look at the Wii's.

It's not even a gamecube dressed up - it's a backwards step!

Jane's Addiction SUCKS.

And the Yo La Tengo album is really growing on me. It's now one of my favorite releases of the year.

EDIT: Half of Dreamcast's library looks better than the Wii version.
