zippdementia I'm best known for my extensive work in the fields of this and that. I tend to be better at that, though I have more fun with this.

I'm an odd jobber with an even personality who isn't afraid to roll with the punches but prefers to dodge them when able.

I just picked up Metal Gear solid 3 subsistence as part of the collection pack. Love that game.

Anyway, I was simultaneously excited and terrified to see that there is now a difficulty mode called European Extreme, which ends the game when you are spotted. This is exactly the kind of mode I would've been dying to get my hands on back when I first played the game (I did try many times to make it through MGS1 without being spotted). I fear that I now shall have to take the challenge.

After all, I'm the one whose always complaining that MGS1 was the last game where you really didn't have to get spotted, what with the powerful weapons you get in the next few games.

But that is pretty insane.

I once played MGS3 without getting spotted. The hardest part is escorting wounded Eva through the first part of the jungle, because she's an idiot. >_>

..uhm.. "European Extreme"? lol. As long as you're fully equipped and protected, I guess you're probably going to enjoy yourself.

..ok.. I'll just take my coat.

It's called European Extreme because the feature originated in a European version of MGS2.

Oh god, escorting Eva was the worst part of the game, but the rest of MGS3:S is awesome.

Yeah, escorting Eva was the only part of that game where I felt like I was struggling with controls, so I concur with all opinions here (even the European XXXtreme opinion).

The only thing that bothers me about this "essential collection" is that it doesn't come with disc 2 of Metal Gear Subsistence (also known as "persistance"). The disc mostly contained the now-defunct MGS3-online, but it also had both original games (MSX versions, redone). Not having those kind of pisses me off, because I'd really like to play a non-sucky version of the original games. The NES version is pretty terrible and Snake's Revenge is a blemish only matched in horrible-ness by the dialogue in MGS2.

You can always look into MSX emulation.

Check if BlueMSX has a Mac version. Most emulators are multiplatform, and many even have Linux builds!

Thanks for the starting point, JV! I checked and blue isn't available for MAc (dammit) but I found another one, fmsx. We'll try it out and get back to ya if it's any good.

Cool. A word of caution:

It's more or less easy to set up a save disk for MG2 if you have the instructions, but MG1 is pretty much going to require the use of save states. The original game used some kind of cassette medium for saving data, which is...difficult...to emulate.

MG2 got an update to its English fan translation just last year, so make sure you check that out too. Good luck with fMSX.

fmsx is way too complicated (well, for me). It's basically a foundation for you to build your own emulator.

That's a shame. Can't believe there isn't a Mac port of BlueMSX. I guess MSX is a pretty niche platform for emulation.

I've only ever played vanilla MGS3, I need to play this someday..is it tough to come buy? European XXXtreme sounds kinda neat.

You should be able to get Subsistence for a decent price, as I don't think it's become rare or OOP. The new camera system alone is worth the price.

I've been playing subsistence and the camera changes really make all the difference, turning what was a brilliant game into a perfect game (aside from the overly lengthy phone call between the presidents early on in the game).

I'm tempted to just rebuy it AGAIN and get the second disc this time. I found an emulator but finding an English ROM of MG1 and 2 has been proving stupidly difficult.

anyone got one...?

Anyway, subsistence is totally worth it. The only thing I can complain about is some slow down that occurs, but that's a PS3 trying-to-play-PS2-games thing.

It's pretty easy to manually patch Japanese disk/ROM images. Try finding a good IPS patching app for Mac.

I'd love to help you out, Zipp, as I did receive a copy to review for THIS VERY DAMN SITE when it came out, but I sold it.

So instead of helping you, I'll just tantalize you by saying that the second MSX Metal Gear game is fucking awesome as hell. It's truly a pity that I only just played it when Subsistence was released. While owning and playing the crappy non-canon Snake's Revenge on my NES when it came out. If you made a Top 10 list for how American gamers were screwed in regards for what games we got, that'd be top 5, in my opinion.

Apparently MGS3 and the PS3 don't get along. My game saves just erased themselves. That really sucks because it means I stayed up till 3:00am playing for no reason whatsoever. Seriously. I could have been asleep hours ago except I was enjoying myself.

Sigh. I really do wish Sony had spent more time on backwards compatibility. More time supporting it, I mean. They seem to have spent a lot of time removing it. And no, I'm not all that interested in picking up a PS2 again, not to mention memory cards, the controllers... ugh. Trying to get rid of stuff in my life, not collect more.

Sad end to Snake's adventures. Probably a Psychomantis trick.

..anyway. A couple more years, and we'll very likely have a new generation of a chipset similar to the ION2 chipsets we have now on the Eee 1215pn, for example. And then it's.. laptop with hdmi-out that can run ps2 games emulated.

But yes.. really wish Sony would have done something more with the ps2 emulation on the ps3. Written spu-based emulation on the instruction set level, etc. Would have worked. If some rumours are correct, they actually had a team - most likely London Studio - running a tech-demo on this. Where all the normally registered functions on the ps2 would execute perfectly, etc. ..it's possible that the problem with it was that a lot of ps2 games (and specially the most popular and good looking ones) never did use only the declared functions. So if they deployed the emulator, it would need custom addons/patches for each game to function perfectly..

Still.. would have paid for that. It would be better than a hd remake, because the individual functions for shadows, things like that, would be possible to smooth out internally, and scale to the actual objects. If you've played the PoP collection, for example, you see the problem when scaling to HD in a hurry right away. While the GoW collection actually has a new code-base where they treat the resources in the engine individually. That no doubt took more work than working from the base of an emulator..

Well, it's a sign of how much I love MGS3 that I played it again last night and brought myself back to where my save had died... in an hour and a half.... now I'm saving twice every time. Already it's tried to crap out on me again but HA HA I've outmanuevered it!

We're not going to Cannes this year because of the cost associated with going; also the film release has been pushed back to September, which gives us more options for festivals. If we do well in the festivals here, we have a decent chance of being invited by our contacts in the industry to Cannes and getting some of the trip paid for. Because tickets to france and hotels in france and eating in france... yeah... not to mention the costs of wining and dining the execs!

I was talking with a guy who went to Cannes and ending up being ordered to buy a 700 dollar bottle of champagne for some baron.

lol.. oof. Sorry to hear that. But maybe it might give you different ways to present the film, instead of riding on one particular angle or short clip, etc..?

:) ..I guess you will save some expenses on the Champagne you wouldn't drink as well..

Hey, I picked up another copy of Subsistence that will come with the second disc; if anyone wants the first disc of subsistence, let me know I'll have an extra! All you have to do is let me know your address and paypal me the money for shipping (I think it's 5-7 dollars today, for domestic).
