Starcraft Lesson learned
August 31, 2010

I was having the best match of my life. A very close match that I was slowly eking out a victory on. He was Terran and had a very strong base loaded with battlecruisers that he would intelligently send on quick strikes against my base.

But I had six bases and, even though his battlecruisers would decimate my forces before being driven back, I was slowly gaining ground. Each attack I had more units and he had less ships. I had actually brought pylons and cannons in all over the map so there was nowhere he could fly to anymore.

I was preparing for the final strike. It was going to be glorious. The culmination of an hour's worth of playing.

Then my computer battery died.

Lesson learned. Always play with your computer plugged into a power source.

Goddamit... this is a terrible fucking story. Of course, I logged back in only to be soundly trounced by the next couple of Terran players due to a stupid raider blitz attack.

They are taking that out in the next patch. Raiders will take significantly longer to build.

Jason doesn't like that word.

Also, what exactly are you referring to by "raiders"? I hope it doesn't mean what I think it means...

Oh, sorry, I meant the little jet pack guys. The community has been calling them raiders, but I think they are actually "reapers."

Reapers, yeah. I just read the patch notes and it looks like the only reason they're doing that is to coincide with the zealots taking longer to build, which is weird, because zealots are worthless against reapers anyway. One of the reasons a reaper rush is so effective against Protoss users right out of the gate is because they usually only have zealots active in the time it takes to get a few reapers up and running.

Yeah, that confused me, too, except that I guess some protoss players have been making good effect with zealots...? I can't seem to get the hang of a zealot rush, myself, or anything to do with protoss and RUSH for that matter.

There does seem to be some balance issue between Protoss and Terran, because by the time I have units like Carriers, they have units like Cruisers... which are better than carriers.

I'm glad to see the cruisers are being taken down, as are seige tanks. See, though? All the big terran units.

One thing I love about Starcraft: you really do get better at the game the more you play. The learning curve is not steep... but it's a long path.

Maybe it was for the best. From what I'm discovering about Cruisers, my "glorious" final run against his base may have ended in absolute disaster.

What I'm trying to learn with Protoss is what a good "final" strike team is.

Early on it definitely involves collosus, what with their ability to walk up cliffs and come in behind a base. If you combine that with the void ray ships, it's pretty deadly.

But once you get into fliers, things get more complicated. I've tried to spam Phoenix, but they don't hold a torch to cruisers. I'm thinking it would be best to have carriers supported by a mothership for the cloaking aspect. If you used vortex to take away half the attacking fleet, I think you could do some major damage to such a fleet.

What I love about all of the Terran changes in this patch is that my beloved MMM will remain entirely unaffected.

I love it when people try to MMM and I have high templars. I'm just starting to learn to use them.

The explosions are funny.
