Silent Hill 2
August 19, 2009

Yahtzee's latest review was FINALLY on this game, explaining to audiences why he holds it up so much.

But you know? I'm not buying it. There were aspects of SH2 I really liked (such as every character except for James) and some of the enemies were genius (namely Pyramid Head and the SH cheerleaders: the Nurses). But overall I found the title to be a bit of a mess, with little scares and far too obtuse a script (and too terrible of voice actors) to really draw me in to the psychological disturbances. There were some key moments of imposing dread and every time I start the game I get this terrifyingly oppressive feeling in my chest like someone's sitting on me after having eaten twelve subway sandwiches, but it wears off once I realize that I'm running around a big empty map with enough shotgun shells to take on Hitler's army.

Anyone else share my sentiments?

I don't know. I rather liked SH2, it was my favorite in the series, though to be honest I only played the first three anyway. I might get the PsP title one of these games, and I think EmP bitched about SH4 or something.

I liked James, I liked the fact that he is not a hero, and that he's really a messed up individual. As for the amount of weaponry in the game, I honestly can't recall using a gun to fight anything that wasn't Pyramid head or the last boss. For other things there was my trusty plank and whatever other melee weapon you have, though later in the game I just didn't bother and simply evaded-ran away from all the enemies that I could.

Yeah, I only played through the first half of the game or so, but I don't remember there being anything close to a mountain of ammo. I mostly used pipes and planks and still ran out of ammo as I was moving through the apartment buildings. Plus the sense of atmosphere was excellent and I felt the same feelings of dread that you referenced... only they never quite went away because, as noted, there's nothing anywhere close to too much ammo.

Really? Maybe I just searched around more than you guys did. I had enough ammo at the end of the game that I deliberately went around the city and killed every single enemy with my shotgun and pistol.
