Arkham Asylum
May 01, 2009

I've been following the game for about a year now, and it's about time I make a blog post about it.

Especially since they re-uploaded the gameplay video over at youtube.

The scary thing about games these days is no matter how innovative or exciting they look, they can always be jacked up to shit. Still, all things considered, we can at least expect the best Batman game since the NES one.

Right?

A lot of bloggieness tonight from me.

I expect little. DC games, unlike their movies and cartoons were always crap. A complete opposite of Marvel which makes rather crappy movies and cartoons(In general, there are good ones of course) but fairly decent games.

But DC games are based on their movies. We've yet to see a batman game based on batman comics, unless you count Batman Lego, which actually was very well recieved.

So I'm not sure your point, as it currently stands, is valid.

All I know is that the games I did play on the DC license were all awful. With the exception of one of those Batman games on the Snes which was alright, but nothing special.

I mean, I agree that the games have been terrible. But as I see it, DC itself has had so little to do with all the games, including this one, that unless the DC label is some kind of curse, the fact that DC games haven't been good lies with some other fault.

Thinking about it, it probably has a lot to do with the fact that Marvel characters and comics lend themselves more to video game conversions. I mean, Spiderman spends most comic books swinging through the city and beating the shit out of punks. The X-men jump into battle with their wide array of super powers.

While Batman, he... well, he hides in the shadows and thinks a lot about his dead family. How the hell do you turn that into a game?

But from what I've seen of this new title, they've figured out a way to do it.

Come on, Batman would be an awesome idea for a game, whether you want to turn it into a beat them up with Manhunt sort of game play, to a detective adventure game filled with quick time events. Batman is like one of the best properties to turn into a video game.

Not so! Do you know how many Batman beat em ups there have been? Almost all of them terrible.
darketernal darketernal - May 03, 2009 (02:31 AM)
I know, that's why I said, a different version of a beat 'em up. It's a good property, they could make it into something similar to the Punisher one ont he PS2, with interrogations, gadgets, "learning" new moves. Hell, he could free roam similarly to Spider Man in his own good games ont he PS2. I'm not saying there are no bad games for the Batman, quite the contrary, almost all of them are, but they could be turned into an awesome game. Maybe this Asylum thingy will be finally good, but like I said, my confidence is not too high until it gets released.

That's totally understandable and very intelligent of you.

I guess what I've been working at is that Marvel characters lend themselves more to beat-em ups and free roams because the focus in a Marvel comic is on beating guys up. It's all about the action.

But a Batman comic is more about the story. Usually, there's very little action involved. It's mostly Batman questioning people and gathering clues. When he encounters villains, he usually engages them in vocal battle, trying to convince them to give up, and they usually have some elaborate scheme that involves something happening half way across Gotham.

Why Arkham Asylum interests me is precisely because it is NOT a brawler. It is a story game. And I can't wait to see what tale they weave.

At the same time, a lot is going to be riding on that tale and the atmosphere the game builds.

I want to see a Hellblazer game( a good Hellblazer game). It would focus on Constantine being an epic level douchebag and screwing everyone up. Constantly.

Would be pretty awesome.
