NOTE: the game only lags during cutscenes, and not very badly on the PS3. I think the PS2 was lagging cause of dust. But the picture just doesn't look good on the PS2.

It's best to discuss the video without getting stuck in politics, since it is easy to miss the point of something when one gets mired in barely definable political terms.

Part of me is ridiculously excited, the other part apathetic.

In both cases the emotion is odd, because I've never seen a single A-Team episode.

I cannot understand why any developer would think it a good idea to have alarms blaring for an entire level, battles included. It's goddamn annoying and yet Square Enix seems obsessed with it, having at least one thirty minute segment in FFXII and FFXIII where this occurs. Makes me want to cry and scream at the same time.

I spent a good part of today in Salem, Oregon, location scouting at the Fairview Training Center, originally known as the Center for the Feeble Minded.

The place is a gathering of many buildings in an area the size of a small village. All the buildings are condemned, but we were able to get inside (with permission) by going through tunnels that span the entire facility (more than 50 miles of tunnels).

Through this, we ended up in an abandoned children's hospital. Very Silent-Hill decor, especially one mural which depicted children running around with balloons.

All the children's eyes had been scratched out.

In any case, we will be filming on location. Our footage will be the last footage of Fairview before the place is torn down.

I'm keeping track at work. Current highlights:

Neil Patrick Harris doing the surprise opening song and dance routine. I love that guy, though I couldn't get into Dr. Evil's sing-along-blog (sorry Will).

Christophe Waltz won for best supporting actor. No surprise there but it is a nice confirmation that all is right in the universe.

Up won best animated, another non-surprise, though there were many good animateds this year (Coraline was great, for instance, as was Nine).

Logorama won the best animated short, which is nice seeing as it took them 6 years to make it. Probably no one but me has heard of that film, though.

I sadly didn't know any of the live action shorts, which is depressing considering I'm trying to make a short.

In other news, the Baldwin-Martin pairing isn't as hilarious as everyone thought it would be.

I've been advertising this alongside Jason's review, since I think the two together give an extremely well-rounded view of what Heavy Rain has to offer. What we need now is for Lewis to write a character, visual, and theme analysis.

I was really tempted to do that for this review, but I felt it would give away too much of the secretive plot. Instead I chose to focus on the unique consequences of the game... unique because they really make you feel them.

No nothing really all that serious. I just need to get my Heavy Rain review done by tomorrow. This is a solemn promise to have it posted, even if it means it won't be eligible for the ROTW that week.

Maybe I'll post it as a staff review, in that case.

There is something I'd like to talk about with everyone in the production room. If you have access to the production room, I'd appreciate your input on the matter.

Population 2: a piece I wrote about a woman who lives alone after the world has ended. Yet, though she is alone, every night she has dinner with someone... or something. The piece focuses both on her daily survival and her nightly dinner ritual, with a lot of dark twists along the way.

Okj, here's some pressing questions answered for everyone:

1) It's not Indigo Prophecy. The game does not lose it's oomph anywhere along the way and, if anything, leaves you wanting a sequel (but emotionally satisfied with this story).

2) Not everyone will like this game. If you're looking for objectives and constant action, don't look here. If you're interested in story and tasks ranging from the anger behind killing a man or the delicateness of rocking a baby to sleep, then this is more your emotional outlet. For those who are into this kind of interactive experience, Heavy Rain is the BEST role playing experience out there.

3) It's going to be difficult to play a game after this that asks for emotional involvement from the player. Heavy Rain's emotions are so human and realistic and not forced that going from this to anime-influenced FFXIII I'm worried will be a bit like going from beer to whiskey, and not in a good way.

4) Animation is incredible. Over 30,000 unique animations in the game lend it the feeling that every scene is different and that the characters are reacting in real time to what's happening on-screen.

5) The choices are not just gaming choices. You feel drawn in to every scene that you have to decide something.

You will probably see these points talked about more in an upcoming review of the game.

Heavy Rain will not keep me from sleeping. I refuse.

I scratched off the redeem code for my Heavy Rain DLC and the damn code came off with the scratch material. Good thing it wasn't a winning lottery ticket or anything.

Trying to get my AvP review posted before the game's been out for a week. If one of the staff has a chance to look over the review in the production room and give me a go-ahead, I'll post.

Jason's review was good enough that I didn't feel the need to provide a complete revamp of the game in mine. Instead, I focused on some specific things that were super-cool.

A review that I think is pretty accurate, just based on what I've seen off the demo.

Well, it convinced me to buy it, if that's any indicator. Especially when this game wasn't even on my radar. The demo is just multiplayer but even there you completely feel the tension of the films. It wouldn't be fair to say that the Predator doesn't have an extreme advantage over the other races, but even that feels appropriate. And the Predator still can't deal with a swarm of aliens (that's the Marine territory) or even a lone Marine who has located him. In free-for-all deathmatch things are stacked in favor of the Predator and against the Alien, but I know that if these mechanics were translated to a team mode, wherein you could have swarms of aliens and troops of marines against rogue predators, the game would be awesome.

Not that it isn't awesome already. They've done an excellent job of streamlining controls and abilities so that every face feels like it has its powers. The Marine's motion tracking sensor is my favourite of the abilities and I'm pleased to see they finally have left it as a permanent "on" and not just for the smart gun.

Similarly, the long-overdue ability to "target jump" as the Predator finally makes an appearance and really adds another dimension to playing the race, giving them the command of the high ground where they can patiently wait for their prey to come to them.

The Aliens are the most disorienting race. I haven't really figured out their combos yet and climbing on walls and ceilings makes me want to throw up... but then I've already seen players using these traits to incredible effect. Probably the coolest feature of the alien is its ability to scare people. I played a 1-v-1 match against an alien (as a marine) and while I definitely had the advantage, I was sweating most of the time. You'll hear a scream from somewhere in the distance, train your sights on... something that's moving (a lot of things in the stages move or hiss, like machinery and pipes) and then suddenly your motion sensor will go crazy with motion... from behind you. You flip around and see nothing. Then comes another hiss and you look up to see HR Gieger's fuck-creature crouched like a spider above you.

Dying in the game is extreme. Being picked up by an Alien and watching its tail go through your chest in a spray of blood... seeing the Predator cut away your head and spine from your body as you're still alive... suddenly losing control of your marine and looking down to see a giant hole in your chest, rimmed with still burning plasma...

Anyway, lots of reasons to be excited about this one. I've been a fan of the AvP series since the first one for the PC and this is shaping up to be the best addition to the trilogy.
