Title: Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter pulls out of a rocky launch
Posted: November 05, 2011 (05:08 PM)
Last Friday marked the release of Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter, the much awaited sequel to one of the PC's most divisive strategy games. But what should have been a day of triumph and celebration for developer Kerberos Productions instead became something of a minor disaster...

Game: Excruciating Guitar Voyage (PC)
Posted: November 28, 2010 (06:59 AM)
Excruciating Guitar Voyage is obviously trying to lampoon, [but] it's too far over that line to be funny anymore. Ultimately, it tries too hard and ends up becoming the kind of amateurish and unpolished game it sets out to make fun of.

I bet you think it's all fun and games, captaining a space ship. I bet to you it's bucketloads of adventure and alien girls and space monsters and cyborgs, and all the other stuff Star Trek says? Well let me tell you something, flatlander; Star Trek has it wrong.

Game: Torchlight (PC)

To its credit, Torchlight is much more than just a cash-in on our nostalgia. As much as it is an homage to its diabolic predecessor, Torchlight easily stands on its own as a game. Rather than using those familiar Diablo elements as a crutch, it takes those elements and gives them just enough of a twist to make them fresh again.

Game: Return to Mysterious Island 2: Mina's Fate (PC)
Posted: December 12, 2009 (06:07 PM)
Despite a couple of hiccups, Return to Mysterious Island 2 does enough of the important things right to deliver a unique and slightly nostalgic experience, and is sufficiently different from its older sibling to justify its place on the fence between Sequel and Expansion.

Game: Restaurant Empire 2 (PC)

What challenges await my Restaurant Empire next month? Liquor licenses and dumb waiters that cost an arm and a leg, but net long-term profits? Hiring additional staff and firing problem employees? Optimizing seating and serving paths for best results? From the looks of it, yes.

Game: Hearts of Iron III (PC)

A Grand Strategy game, for those readers who have no idea what it is, is a game that simulates everything. Gameplay is conducted at the national level, in contrast to more a conventional game like Company of Heroes which takes place at the battalion level. Rather than commanding soldiers and vehicles on the battlefield, the player has at his disposal the resources and manpower of an entire nation.

Game: Space War Commander (PC)
Posted: May 30, 2009 (10:15 PM)
Space War Commander is simple enough that it can be picked up and learned very quickly, and won't eat up your time with long-winded matches like other RTS games. The only thing really missing is multiplayer support, but even so Space War Commander is a superb time-killer

Game: Sword of the Stars: Ultimate Collection (PC)
Posted: May 25, 2009 (03:22 PM)
Sword of the Stars: Ultimate Collection brings in some wonderfully fresh ideas, but stays true to the 4X formula. This is a game with a lot of depth and a lot to learn, and you aren't likely to master it in a weekend.
