What to FAQ?
January 06, 2006

(pronounced as 'fack')

I've been in a FAQ-writing slump since I completed my last guide for a Simpsons game back in '04 (Bart vs. the Space Mutants on the C64, for those curious).

I've written plenty of miscellaneous guides throughout my FAQing career (with at least a few more planned for '06), but my passion for this hobby comes from the fun of writing guides for games based on the Simpsons or similar animated shows. I had a taste of such a game when I wrote a guide for Beavis and Butthead in Virtual Stupidity.

So I ask: what else is there right now? I've been considering South Park on the N64 and perhaps the Beavis and Butthead or Ren and Stimpy games on the Sega Genesis, but I'm open to suggestions.

South Park deserves a good game
December 23, 2005

South Park has been on television for what, eight years now? And in that time we've had three fairly crappy and easily forgettable South Park games.

The first was South Park on the N64 (and later ported to the PlayStation). It starred Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny in a first-person quest to rid South Park of mutant turkeys and weird aliens. The gameplay consisted of killing turkeys... and more turkeys... and even more turkeys... and you get the idea. But the repetitive action wasn't it's biggest downfall in my opinion. It was that fog. That horrible, bright, annoying fog that was always just a few feet ahead of your character. Even during the somewhat enjoyable multiplayer mode the fog would just bring me down.

A cool adventure-puzzle game.
December 15, 2005

All I have today is a quick recommendation. I recently found a great Flash game called Samorost 2, developed by Flash developers at Amanita Design. The art style is heavily influenced by European design and the game itself involves clever puzzles and a quirky story and characters. Check it out for free or pay only $10 for the full offline version.

Acclaim's many games up for auction.
December 09, 2005

As we all know, Acclaim filed for bankruptcy some time ago and all company assets were sold off. I just found out that their many IPs are also being sold in an auction in New York. Included in the auction are the many Simpsons games they published (the entire Simpsons package is currently at $7,500). Check out the full list at the auction site.

Xbox Live Arcade: the indie developer's best friend?
December 07, 2005

As I'm sure you all know the Xbox 360 launched a short time ago with a some big name titles and a generally decent line-up of games for every type of gamer. One big step up from the previous Xbox was the new Xbox Live Arcade. XBL Arcade is a service that comes along with an Xbox Live account where users can purchase and download games that are 50mb or less to play on the console. They include the usual suspects such as the casual puzzle game Bejeweled, classic arcade hits like Joust and Smash T.V., and even some new hits such as Geometry Wars Retro Evolved.

Get your indie games.
December 01, 2005

Independent games can be classified as games that are developed without money from a third party, typically known as the publisher. The developer may eventually get a distribution deal with a publisher, but the game itself was financed internally. It is exceptionally sweet when independent games are so good that they beat many of the games out there that have bloated budgets and are still average or just lame. Here are two independent titles that I feel deserve top honors among the greatest video games of all time.

Well, the ball is in EA's court again.
November 29, 2005

I'll merely mention the fact that I'm a big fan of The Simpsons television show. It's fairly obvious. Beyond that, however, I admire the resilience and potential of the I.P.. Any license that could be as pimped out as The Simpsons was in the early 90s and still sell products today is something for any business man to admire. Not that I'm a business man nor do I desire to become one, but having worked among them for some time has given me a sense for that side of the biz.
