Final Fantasy VIII (PlayStation)

Final Fantasy VIII review (PSX)

Reviewed on June 07, 2005

Final Fantasy VIII is a gorgeous work of art. It has a damn good story, too. But, to my chagrin, I have to say that Final Fantasy VIII is a pretty shoddy game — one that betrayed the magnificence of the previous two games in the series and, in my eyes, brought Square’s monolithic series plummeting from its perch on top of the role-playing world.

Pepsiman review (PSX)

The problem is though, how do you turn a popular series of TV advertisements into a half way decent video game? OK, so there's no easy answer. From a purely corporate perspective, you'd probably want to fill such a title with any number of product placements, perhaps even looping the campaign's catchy jingle as well. Right then, check, check and double check, but what of the game itself?

Ten Pin Alley review (PSX)

Let’s just admit—right now—that we don’t play sports games for the story. While some elements of an intriguing nature could be placed into some of the bigger genres, even Solid Snake couldn’t add any plot to a bowling game. While that’s known and accepted, we instead try our hands for the entertainment and the realism of a sports game—even if it is bowling. If this is a well known fact—that the more realistic and down to earth a sports game is the better—then someone needs to tell ASC the makers...

Metal Gear Solid review (PSX)

Near the end of Metal Gear Solid, Liquid Snake, the terrorist leader who's (deep breath now) using a captured secret nuclear-armed prototype mech to blackmail the U.S. government into, among other things, sending over the remains of his father (AKA "Big Boss") to be used to repair the DNA of his army of clones and achieve his father's dream of an impregnable fortress from which to begin world domination (whew!), describes his plot to retrieve his father's remains as an example of the "sel...

Driver review (PSX)

Reviewed on April 23, 2005

Being an undercover cop sounds to me like a kind of mental torture, where I am always constantly paranoid that my identity shall be exposed at any moment and inspire the wrath of several Mr. Blonde types with Brooklyn accents, begging the question of why I worked for The Man in the first place. No thanks, I like having ears and all. For a badass like Tanner, an ex-racer/swinger/hustler cop, life is dull unless you're constantly holding on to life by the fingertips, and the best sensation in the ...

Monsterseed review (PSX)

Reviewed on April 21, 2005

As soon as he walks on screen, you can tell the ferociously-named Daniel is your heroic protagonist. Wearing last summers generic hero apparel, the blocky and squat graphics do what they can to represent him in shiny silver armour, complete with the manly headband that stereotypically adorns the slopping brow of only those chosen by fate to rid the world of evil.

Asuka 120% Special Burning Fest review (PSX)

Pummel your opponent for a few seconds and build your Super Meter up to 100 percent, unlocking the ominously-named Kero Kero Anger or ferocious twirling pom-pom attacks! The Super Meter isn't a new invention, but Asuka takes it to the ludicrous extreme... because it doesn't stop at 100 percent! The meter keeps filling all the way up to 120% Burning.

Dino Crisis 2 review (PSX)

Reviewed on March 22, 2005

To say I was impressed with the original Dino Crisis would be an extreme understatement, and would probably be a travesty to my feelings of the game. I enjoyed playing the original immensely, despite the fact I found it to have some flaws. Of course, I am one of those people that can find flaws in any game, but that does not take away from the fun factor I experience with these games, at all. I definitely enjoyed playing the original Dino Crisis, because it took everything I liked about Resident...

Brave Fencer Musashi review (PSX)

Reviewed on March 07, 2005

My favorite video game company of all time is SquareSoft. Never in my life have I seen such a company that could focus on mainly one genre (RPG) for so long, then delve into other genres (Einhander as a shooter, Ehreigz as a fighting game) and succeed so wildly as a result. So when I heard of the cool Playstation game made by SquareSoft named Brave Fencer Mushashi, I made sure to pick up a copy of it as soon as possible. Hearing of the amazing gameplay elements, the game reminded me of Secret of...

Suikoden (PlayStation)

Suikoden review (PSX)

Reviewed on February 28, 2005

No, this game does not span multiple discs. No, the graphics aren’t 3-D. Ok, ok, the box art is horrible. And yes, I’m not exactly sure how to pronounce the name either. However, none of those things mean that Suikoden is a bad game. Suikoden is actually a delightful little gem that never exactly reached a wide audience. Hidden beneath the horrible box art and crude graphics is an admirable RPG with plenty of heart and emotion, not to mention enough characters to sink a battleship...

Inuyasha: A Feudal Tale review (PSX)

If you have the urge for some casual demon fighting action, then look no further. This game offers plenty of demons, girls with sacred arrows, a lady with a giant boomerang, and a guy who sucks up things with his hand.

Mega Man 8 Anniversary Edition review (PSX)

Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution has been superfluously criticized by both religious fanatics and the common folk, and while over the last two centuries most of the population has come to a compromise on this bitterly-contested thesis, there still remain the stubborn and untactful few.

Wild Arms review (PSX)

Reviewed on January 26, 2005

Filgaia wasn't always the sparse, barren landscape you'll now find it to be. Once it was a hospitable and green land, filled with life of all sorts. The world’s desolate dunes were once lush hills, the uninhabitable deserts previously great forests that stretched out serenely into the horizon. Then there was war. Nothing apocalypses up a place more than a good war.

Final Fantasy Anthology review (PSX)

Reviewed on January 26, 2005

Being a crazed fanboy can cause people to do stupid things. Take me, for instance. I should really have no reason to own this game. I already play FF6 regularly, and FF5 isn't good enough for me to want to own a copy. But my Playstation was sitting there all lonely and this game was really cheap and, well, here it is. And thus that little urge I get to replay one of my favorite games of all time became irresistible, and I popped the FF6 disk in. Twenty minutes in convinced me that I should...

Resident Evil 2 (PlayStation)

Resident Evil 2 review (PSX)

Reviewed on January 19, 2005

Am I destined to hate survival horror games? I shudder to think that I might shun an entire genre because of my experience with only one game. However, it just so happens that this one is considered one of the genre’s quintessential games. I usually find the idea of passionately hating a game a bit absurd, but in some cases I really have to make exceptions. Among the most widely acclaimed of these exceptions would have to be Resident Evil 2, a game that’s about as interesting and lively as the z...

Suikoden review (PSX)

Reviewed on January 13, 2005

Once upon a time, when I first bought a Playstation, one of the initial games I purchased was a Konami role-playing game by the name of Suikoden. At first glance, spending money on this game seemed to be a bit of an error in judgement. The graphics looked more suited to a game on the Super Nintendo. More damning was that the plot seemed to be anything but original, as it revolved around a young man beginning his service under the local emperor....only to find out that corruption’s afoot! Yes, th...

Bloody Roar review (PSX)

Reviewed on January 11, 2005

Bloody Roar, a 3D fighter released during the modern glut of 3D fighters, relies on style over gameplay. I believe you can make the connection here. Fond memories of the title crop up every now and again, but when I yearn to play a PSX fighter, I find myself reaching for Soul Edge instead.

Parasite Eve review (PSX)

Reviewed on January 08, 2005

It's the night before Christmas, and the visage of the Statue of Liberty is solemn. A panning camera slides briefly across the New York cityscape, but pauses to contemplate this peculiarity. A sparse snow is falling, and Liberty's lips are puckered in a pout, her head tilted downward looking worryingly at the ever-present hustle below, a thin blotch cascading from the melancholy right eye and down the cheek. Is it a tear?
