Resident Evil 5 (PlayStation 3)

Resident Evil 5 review (PS3)

Reviewed on May 28, 2009

Over the countless years I’ve been playing video games, I’ve anticipated the release of many titles. Most of them have been sequels—Shining Force II, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Bloodrayne 2. It’s a long list. But never, ever, have I anticipated a game as much as I did Resident Evil 5.

ZEN Pinball (PlayStation 3)

ZEN Pinball review (PS3)

Reviewed on May 24, 2009

The problem I encountered is that the "quick" matches are often too intimidating for inexperienced players. They amount to a score race, with every competitor playing simultaneously and trying to hit 5,000,000 (or some much higher number) before his worthy opponents. However, there are often penalties in place that take away as much as half of any score amassed. It's easy to quickly fall into a pattern where you have somewhere around 3,000,000 total points, gain around 300,000 on a new attempt, then lose 10% of your total and fall right back to where you were... again and again and again. Unless you're joined by someone more proficient, matches can last an eternity.

Call of Duty: World at War (PlayStation 3)

Call of Duty: World at War review (PS3)

Reviewed on May 17, 2009

I imagine that it's hard to be Infinity Ward. Ever since the creation of their fantastic Call of Duty series, they've had to deal with a horrific publisher in Activision, helmed by Noah Keller, the next Hiroshi Yamauchi. Their games, which take the concepts Valve made famous with their Half-Life series and run with it, are constantly shunned by elitist snobs clamoring for games with good narrative since Call of Duty is yet ANOTHER game where guys have guns. And every year they have to give their...

Demon's Souls (PlayStation 3)

Demon's Souls review (PS3)

Reviewed on May 15, 2009

The Kingdom of Boletaria was once a prosperous and advanced society, founded as it was on "soul magic" - or the art of drawing on souls to cast powerful spells. But the lords of the realm grew decadent, and without the discipline and restraint needed, awakened a mythical beast, "the Old one", reducing Boletaria to rubble, and leaving a host of demons to feast on the souls of the remaining population.

Wanted: Weapons of Fate (PlayStation 3)

Wanted: Weapons of Fate review (PS3)

Reviewed on April 19, 2009

Wanted: Weapons of Fate falls quite comfortably into the third-person shooter mold. You can run up to someone and gut him with a squishy-sounding thrust of your knife to his stomach or throat when it suits you, but most of your energy is reserved for the exchange of flying lead as you duck behind destructible bits of the environment and hope that your aim is good enough to wipe out all of the thugs that are gunning for you. If you let yourself run out of ammo, the game can get very frustrating as enemies stand two feet away and pelt you with bullets while you hug a wall that you're using for cover and fiddle with the camera. There's perhaps no sound more frightening than the echo of a hollow chamber when you expected a bang.

Resident Evil 5 (PlayStation 3)

Resident Evil 5 review (PS3)

Reviewed on April 17, 2009

Upon opening one door on their way to the rendezvous point, they encounter their first Ganado.....I mean Majini (same thing, different ethnicity). After blasting it to hell, it doesn't take long for our heroes to find themselves in deep doo-doo, as they get chased around the town by a horde of Majini led by a hulking chap wielding an executioner's axe. The main goal here, at least for a first-time player, is simply to survive long enough for a scripted event to kick in, allowing you to escape unscathed. In other words, it's the early-game village scene from RE 4 with a few minor tweaks.

Wheelman (PlayStation 3)

Wheelman review (PS3)

Reviewed on April 17, 2009

You'll have plenty of opportunities to go up against both gangsters and police as you tour Barcelona. Because Milo is a wheelman, many of the stages naturally involve a lot of interaction with other vehicles at high speeds. Besides leaping from ride to ride, you can stick to the one you currently have and use it like a battering ram. Much of the surrounding environment is more destructible than your current set of wheels, so you'll generally get to exchange a few bumps with your opponent as trees, motorcyclists and park benches fly to either side of your grill like hay swept away by a hurricane.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PlayStation 3)

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed review (PS3)

Reviewed on April 17, 2009

I have been told it is a known scientific fact that as people grow older, films and games tend to increase in greatness as time passes since the last play- through. So that logically, any criticism of newer Star- Wars titles for being vapid and shameless commercial offerings, just without the charm of the old ones, can be dismissed altogether. Either because the audience has now become mature and is no longer enticed by the simplistic plots that never were very good to begin with. Or because the...

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. (PlayStation 3)

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. review (PS3)

Reviewed on April 16, 2009

Though you may tweak the controls with various assistance features to curb instability, the game never feels right. For the first few hours, you will battle the controls more than the enemy. Funnily enough, the enemies are easy – so easy that there are missions where you’ll spend more time staring at the radar (to locate enemies) than the actual stage. Most enemies can be taken out in two simple steps: (1) lock-on and (2) fire a missile. To increase your success rate, fire two missiles at the same time.

Resident Evil 5 (PlayStation 3)

Resident Evil 5 review (PS3)

Reviewed on March 25, 2009

I like games that make me think. When trying to break through a barricade of machine gunners and vicious packs of dogs, I want the answer not to be “use a better rifle” but to be something more involved. For instance, sending a partner along a catwalk to draw the gun fire while I sneak closer and blow out the fox holes with a close up grenade or two. Resident Evil 5 should’ve been littered with these kind of situations, but more often than not it opts for straight shoot outs. And they get old.

Resident Evil 5 review (PS3)

Reviewed on March 14, 2009

Innovation doesn’t have to be good, right? That was what I first thought when I played Resident Evil 4. I was one of those few people who didn’t like the way that the game took the Resident Evil (Or Biohazard, if you prefer) series. Despite this attitude, I must admit that I enjoyed Resident Evil 4, perhaps not as a Resident Evil game, but as a shooter. When Resident Evil 5 was announced, I was one of those people who prayed, unrealistically, that it would return the series back to the old schoo...

Killzone 2 (PlayStation 3)

Killzone 2 review (PS3)

Reviewed on March 14, 2009

Because the game rewards you for playing, you never feel that your time and efforts are being wasted. “So I got my ass handed to me and only made 10 kills in an hour," you might think. "Big deal. That’s still 10 kills closer to my next rank.” With that said, you'll never just have 10 kills in a match of Killzone 2. The game is designed for heavy casualties. It’s not uncommon to get over a hundred kills in a single match.

Street Fighter IV (PlayStation 3)

Street Fighter IV review (PS3)

Reviewed on February 27, 2009

Though I didn't find a convenient way to determine a competitor's skill level until after he beats me—or loses—that didn't actually work out too badly. I'm someone who likes to get right into another round of fighting, anyway, and the current system makes that easy to do. Besides that, lag is minimal. I've played quite a few matches and only once did I find things lagging. Really, the only complaint I have with online is the obvious one: scrubs. I don't mind that people almost always fight using Ryu, Ken or Sagat (I like some of those guys myself), but some players try to play mind games.

X-Blades review (PS3)

Ayumi has to be somebody's wet dream. The press releases talk-up the sexy art style, and emphasize how both action and anime fans will slobber over her figure and fighting moves. And no doubt, some people will be drawn to her brash attitude. But the girl can only take the game so far, and she's been outfitted in a stagnant ensemble.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade (PlayStation 3)

3 on 3 NHL Arcade review (PS3)

Reviewed on February 10, 2009

This game nails the Arcade portion of its title. Shedding all cumbersome rules – offsides, icing, penalties, faceoffs – 3 on 3 NHL Arcade delivers nonstop shots, hard hitting-checks, and silly powerups. The NHL half, though, is not so exciting. No teams, no logos, and no familiar arenas or cities. It's a shallow battle of generic jerseys.
