Mass Effect (Xbox 360)

Mass Effect review (X360)

Reviewed on March 21, 2008

I completed Mass Effect in little more than twenty hours, which may seem like a travesty when compared with many other successful RPGs. But Mass Effect’s amazingly involving methods of storytelling are truly unmatched, and with rarely a moment that isn’t spectacular, BioWare has (regardless of length) skillfully crafted one of the most compelling RPGs ever made.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare review (X360)

Reviewed on March 21, 2008

In 2003, Infinity Ward (formed by the developers of the infamous Medal of Honor series) was bought out by Activision. In turn IF began developing the Call of Duty series, and as they say, the rest is history. Fast forward the story 4 years later, and we now have Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Jam-packed with all the same thrills as the previous installments, CoD4 lives up to the hype and does the franchise proud.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe review (X360)

Reviewed on March 21, 2008

Imagine breaking your arm. You'll find that the pain is unbearable and you just want it to stop as soon as possible. Now triple that pain. Hurts, doesn't it? Well, This pain is similar to that of which you will find in Next Level Games' Spiderman: Friend or Foe, in this case for the Xbox360.

Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

Lost Odyssey review (X360)

Reviewed on March 20, 2008

The endless flow of time is a harsh master to us all. Its relentless nature makes every second of life precious because, ultimately, every second that goes by takes us closer to death. So imagine if you weren't constrained by this eternal force. Imagine if you were blessed with a life that never ends. Free you may be from the limits of mortality, but truly, is the gift of eternal life a blessing or a curse? Lost Odyssey tells the tale of such a man, the tale of Kaim Argonar and his quest to rega...

Turok review (X360)

Dinosaurs don’t need help to be scary. They’re stronger, faster, more resilient, and better hunters than you’ll ever be. That leaves one, powerful weapon that many FPSs frequently ignore – wits.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty (Xbox 360)

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty review (X360)

Reviewed on March 10, 2008

What makes the invasion of the U.S. different from that of France? Who would fight back, and who would manipulate the situation for personal gain? Instead of seizing the opportunity to dissect the American experience, Spark slapped some fedoras and Brooklyn accents on the scene and called it a day.

Poker Smash review (X360)

Reviewed on March 02, 2008

Everyone loves poker - the bluffing, that chance of getting a great hand, going all in, the waiting? Imagine throwing that all out of the window yet in a backward sense sticking to what makes it great. Poker Smash is a puzzle game for the Xbox Live Arca- wait, before you stop reading and are convinced this is just another port of an internet puzzle game, then you are in for a surprise. Where were we? Ah yes, Poker Smash by Void Star Creations is a puzzle game akin to Planet Puzzle League, but wi...

BioShock (Xbox 360)

BioShock review (X360)

Reviewed on February 29, 2008

I'm not normally one for videogame stories, but BioShock's impressed me. Ken Levine and his team at Irrational, if you've managed to miss the sweeping praise, wisely sidestepped the usual Philosophy 101 nonsense while still grasping at a bigger meaning than “aliens are bad”. It's an interactive Xbox 360 condemnation of unfettered capitalism and greed that goes far beyond Metal Gear's soliloquies on cardboard boxes and the meaning of life. Every now-ironic banner lining the city of Rapture procla...

Mass Effect (Xbox 360)

Mass Effect review (X360)

Reviewed on February 29, 2008

I hate to say that I regret buying Mass Effect. I don't feel like I should hate this game, it's ambitious and has a great story, epic scope, a great and innovative dialogue system, and an awesome musical score. The truth is though, this game just feels undercooked. It strives for greatness and falls just short, and it affects every aspect of the game to the point where it makes it hard for me to continue playing. There will be many people who will easily overlook Mass Effect's flaws and call...

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock review (X360)

Reviewed on February 28, 2008

"It's the soundtrack, stupid" is the only mantra that matters when you're developing a rhythm game. Before you even think of introducing new play modes, updating the graphics and presentation, or adding online play, you have to pick the right songs. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock does this better than any rhythm game ever has.

Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

Lost Odyssey review (X360)

Reviewed on February 24, 2008

Kaim's journey might be accompanied by a story that's wildly different from the crowd, but its gameplay isn't far removed from that of other JRPGs. Battles are randomly encountered, turn-based affairs, but more strategic than you might expect. Both you and your enemies have front row and back row formations where characters in the front shield the rear characters from damage.

Assassin's Creed review (X360)

Reviewed on February 20, 2008

At long last, a medieval Grand Theft Auto crossed with Virtuosity with a whole lot of Hashishism and no small amount of heinous Arabic stereotypes. To be fair, Ubisoft Montreal consists of many people of differing beliefs and opinions, so there is no doubt the handful of Christian characters are also uptight, militant arseholes. Yes, it's the Middle East during the Crusades, the glorious 12th century AD. Even in the heart of Mesopotamia, everyone speaks in the tongue of the heretic...

TimeShift (Xbox 360)

TimeShift review (X360)

Reviewed on February 11, 2008

I would like to know why giant robots roam the streets of 1939, why the rebellious Occupants are battling the empire of Dr. Krone, and most of all, why those rebels trust me without so much as a “hello.” If a stranger popped into my house, the last thing I would do is give him a gun and turn my back.

Rez HD (Xbox 360)

Rez HD review (X360)

Reviewed on January 31, 2008

This is one of the only games where the graphics and sound are as important, if not more important, than the gameplay. The A/V presentation defines Rez. The visuals consist of wireframes and simple polygonal figures on sparsely detailed backgrounds. Normally, this would be hideous. Thankfully, everything in Rez is constantly moving and pulsating -- from the lines that compose the ground to your character, nothing ever stands still.

Eternal Sonata (Xbox 360)

Eternal Sonata review (X360)

Reviewed on January 30, 2008

When you walk upon this world, its beauty will leave you lost for words. The dazzling ambience of rich colour, every shade of the rainbow, is quite a sight to behold. It's almost as if Eternal Sonata is a vibrant dream, and that isn't far from the truth. This obscure tale unfolds within the confines of a dream; that of the famed composer, Frederic Chopin, who lies on his deathbed. And despite the unorthodox setting and cutesy characters, there are a lot of deep issues embedded in Chopin's...

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare review (X360)

Reviewed on January 29, 2008

A world map hovers on screen and whirls around until the Middle East pops into view. The screen zooms in to a city along the west coast of Saudi Arabia, possibly Jiddah. We’re taken in closer, to the computerized image of two figures carrying an immobilized President Al-Fulani. A moment later and you’re looking through Al-Fulani’s eyes as he’s being thrust into the backseat of a car. As you’re driven through the war-torn city, you can do nothing but watch as masked terrorists fire guns, raid hom...

No matter the skill setting of the team you're playing, be it mighty Australia to pitiful America, there's about a 50% chance that they'll either be an LBW awarded or the ball will smash into the bails. Either way, look to bowl out entire teams for under 50 runs.

Armored Core 4 review (X360)

Reviewed on January 20, 2008

I stood on the lip of a craggy shoreline as ballistic missiles screamed towards my position. My mission was to safeguard the understaffed military headquarters that stood behind me. Set against the velvet backdrop of the night sky, they falter under the onslaught of bullets, rockets and pulsing laser blasts, their explosions causing a breath-taking chain effect as other missiles caught in the vicinity of their blast radius detonated early. The base I protect offer assurance...

Halo 3 review (X360)

Reviewed on January 17, 2008

Halo 3 has plenty of amazing moments, but one of my favorites occurred in the game’s first half as I was fighting off Covenant defenses in war-torn Africa in a desperate attempt to destroy that thing our adversaries are digging up, that mysterious thing that the Covenant have managed to uncover from beneath the Earth’s surface, that thing that we all saw in the game’s announcement trailer a couple of years ago. I led my team of marines into a garage where we were able...

MX vs ATV Untamed review (X360)

Reviewed on January 16, 2008

Whereas I found that the motocross tracks were so tight and narrow that I spent too much time braking and turning to actually pick up the pace and have fun, the ATV courses really take the weight off and give me more time to appreciate some of the simpler pleasures of off road racing.
