L.A. Noire (Xbox 360)

L.A. Noire review (X360)

Reviewed on June 11, 2011

What a big, overlong miscalculation L.A. Noire is. It has the ingredients of an engaging detective game but then hastily shoves them aside in favor of drama, and it has a tight script and the best motion capture work in the business, all to present a story that’s meandering, unfocused, and anticlimactic. L.A. Noire’s plot and gameplay both seem to exist to service the other, and neither works.

Mass Effect 2 review (X360)

Mass Effect 2 is remarkable for being perhaps the best existing example of How To Do A Videogame Sequel Correctly.

Saints Row 2 (Xbox 360)

Saints Row 2 review (X360)

Reviewed on June 10, 2011

But then Volition did something that a lot of developers with flawed games fail to do: created a sequel that not only addressed the “if onlies”, but expanded on the game as a whole. Saints Row 2 brings the noise.

Crackdown 2 review (X360)

Reviewed on June 03, 2011

I reviewed the original a while back. I might as well direct you there; it’s not like Crackdown 2 is a new game or anything.

Virtua Tennis 4 review (X360)

Reviewed on May 31, 2011

It’s no easy task to follow up a perfect original game with sequel after sequel. Virtua Tennis will always be Virtua Tennis, no matter how you package it. In other words, Virtua Tennis will always be a joy to play.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 (Xbox 360)

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 review (X360)

Reviewed on May 31, 2011

Essentially, if you're a fan of Naruto you'll probably love it. That's all I have to say, and I've probably wasted ten minutes writing this because almost NOBODY will look past the zany looking box art to the right. But if you do, I think you may find yourself enjoying this game a hullava lot more than you expected to.

Brink (Xbox 360)

Brink review (X360)

Reviewed on May 30, 2011

Being able to communicate with real people is pretty key, as the game involves people taking on one of four different roles (Soldier, Medic, Engineer or Operative – a.k.a. Spy) to complete missions. Success in these tasks is nigh-impossible if you've got some moron CPU, who insisted in his random English accent, 'I'LL ESCORT YOW', sprinting into the firing line then having his head blown off before he can take ten minutes to turn around and attempt to fire back.

Plants vs. Zombies (Xbox 360)

Plants vs. Zombies review (X360)

Reviewed on May 29, 2011

With neighbor Crazy Dave (who is obviously crazy because he has a pot for a hat) at your side to give you advice and yell gibberish at you, you’re off to guard your precious home by planting organic armies to do your bidding. You build up your reserves by gathering sunlight, which falls from the sky or pops out of immensely helpful sunflowers. Once you have enough sunlight, you choose from a variety of plants to fortify your home and build your forest.

Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond (Xbox 360)

Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond review (X360)

Reviewed on May 29, 2011

After the disappointment that was Eat Lead, a mundane attempt at video game satire, I really, truly wasn't expecting its sequel to be hot stuff. I started playing it, realized it was a run 'n gun title in the tradition of Contra... and waited. For what? For Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond to suck.

Saints Row (Xbox 360)

Saints Row review (X360)

Reviewed on May 27, 2011

And while GTA has been veering towards a less ridiculous narrative, Saints Row begs not to be taken seriously. One scene features your character flying out of a vehicle at 60 MPH and skidding along the pavement. Instead of dying or winding up in critical condition, he shrugs it off like he stubbed his toe.

Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale (Xbox 360)

Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale review (X360)

Reviewed on May 26, 2011

Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale has a lot of glitches, very little plot, almost no enemy variety and a sloppy interface that sometimes makes playing the game a chore. The first few hours almost immediately feel tedious, but the game improves from there. Unfortunately, it never really does anything especially memorable.

Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard review (X360)

You often find yourself thinking, "Is this a nod to another game, or is Eat Lead unintentionally doing something cliche?"

Halo 3: ODST (Xbox 360)

Halo 3: ODST review (X360)

Reviewed on May 20, 2011

Daniel Richtmyre - If you are one of many who enjoy the Halo games, than there is really nothing I can say that will deter you from buying Halo 3: ODST. In fact, chances are, you’ve probably already bought the game. Halo 3: ODST uses basically the same formula as pretty much every other game in the series. If you like Halo, you’ll like this game; but if you don’t, than this expansion probably isn’t going to change your mind.

Tower Bloxx Deluxe (Xbox 360)

Tower Bloxx Deluxe review (X360)

Reviewed on May 20, 2011

Daniel Richtmyre - Tower Bloxx Deluxe is an incredibly addictive game. The premise being that you must stack stories of a building together in order to make an incredibly tall tower. This is done by dropping “Bloxx” from a swinging crane, which initially starts on a flat building site, and progressively grows when you start stacking bloxx on top of each another.

Mirror's Edge review (X360)

Reviewed on May 20, 2011

Dan McKenney – You might be looking to play a new first-person shooter? If you are, that's cool. There's plenty of options, so take your time. No hurry… Now, a first-person action platform game? Well, there's really only one of those. The one being Mirror's Edge, a surprisingly creative new IP from the Battlefield devs Digital Illusions CE.

L.A. Noire (Xbox 360)

L.A. Noire review (X360)

Reviewed on May 19, 2011

What eventually passes for core gameplay in LA Noire is a bad guessing game in which you have to decide whether people are lying and which bits of evidence from your inventory confirm the lie. It's all very vague, and you'll feel like quite the schmuck when you're sure you've cornered a suspect, only to realize that the game's writer was on a different page. Not that it matters, which is a terrible thing to say about core gameplay.

Brink (Xbox 360)

Brink review (X360)

Reviewed on May 12, 2011

Like Quake Wars, Brink has excellent bot support, which makes it a viable single-player game. Or, even better, a game you can enjoy with a small group of friends playing among bots. It's remarkable how well the AI can handle this relatively complicated game, making use of different weapons, different class abilities, the movement system, and various elements of the maps. In fact, one of the best ways to learn a map is to follow a bot. When it comes to competent bots making multiplayer more than just multiplayer, medium budget games like Brink and Section 8 put to shame AAA franchises like Halo and Call of Duty.

Dead Space 2 review (X360)

In the very first scene – before we even take control – Isaac is talking to a guy who’s trying to get him out of his straitjacket, and then the guy gets stabbed in the face by an infector, and then scythes sprout out of his back, and then his face peels off, and then he goes “BLEEEAAAAAAARRRRRRKLLKEJBGFMVRSKGUSBOVMOCDGJEBSHRV!” And then the game gets loud.
