You’ll see the usual flaming uppercuts, 360 degree spinning pile drivers, and upside-down hurricane kicks – yup, the usual fare. But because this is a Street Fighter game of the SUPER COMBO (or ISM) era, you’ll also bear witness to the vacuum hurricane kick, which catches unsuspecting enemies in its unforgiving vortex; and my personal favourite, Ken’s Shippu Jinraikyaku, which may as well have been dubbed, “huge soccer kick turns into spinning kick which carries opponent to the top of the screen to die”. (That was probably too long.) Alpha 3 is full of such awe-inspiring maneuvers.

Special weapons add a lot of strategy to the game and are perhaps the most exciting change. Any time you slaughter four aliens of the same hue in succession, you'll receive a corresponding special shot. This is attached to a meter that quickly drains, but while you are supercharged you can unleash a triple-wide shot (green), explosive shells (red) or a devastating laser beam (blue).

Magician Lord is still gorgeous. Its backdrops are utterly otherworldly; its foregrounds brim with fantasy book life. Long-armed, bipedal beasts and gaggles of skeletons patrol the outer realms framed by unearthly mountain range and sky. Leap-deterring, hovering spheres; amorphous, wall-hugging gelatin; and spinning eyeballs actually seem alien -- not your garden variety projectile-spitters.

As the game's packaging indicates, there are more than 80 different units available. These fall into several categories. You'll choose from agile jets, slower support vehicles, Force pods, carriers and an assortment of other units. It won't take you long to realize that there aren't really a lot of distinct options, though.

Chains of Olympus is a handheld version of the PS2 God of War games. But don’t be fooled: it wants desperately to not be a handheld game. In the transition from DVD9 to a 1.8GB UMD, nothing has been lost as far as gameplay is concerned. Content? Replay value? That’s another story. Even on normal difficulty, on countless occasions I've had a race all but wrapped up, taking care to play it safe as the game allows in the home stretch, only to land a jump on a barricade and get tossed violently from my vehicle while the other riders whip by (they're probably smiling under their helmets, the bastards).

Some of the events are minutely tuned to keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Often, you finish the timed events with only seconds to spare, and the races are challenging, pushing you to the limit in order to beat the other riders. Luckily, the frustration is lessened somewhat by the game's free roaming aspect, which allows you to take a breather at any time, ride around, do some tricks, jump onto buildings, whatever you want. But it's really just kind of delaying the inevitable. Even with these little flickers of excitement, the objectives themselves are somewhat repetitive as well, and you just get to do them all again from zone to zone.

Accessed once you complete the original adventure (or with a code from the title screen), Etna Mode is a retelling of the classic story that begins with Etna trying to wake Laharl from his slumber... then accidentally shooting him in the head. As the late Overlord's son crumples into his casket, the red-headed heroine realizes she has a problem. The nearly 40 hours of gameplay that follow answer the question of what the Netherworld would do without its self-absorbed prince.

Classic game compilations are an oddity. You plunk down cash for them while fondly remembering the “glory days” in which the included games were made, and often realize after ten minutes of play that your favorite games of yesteryear were garbage. Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is an exception. Composed of a 3D remake of the formerly Japan-only Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, the original PC-Engine version of Rondo of Blood, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

For all that initial negativity and bias, NBA08 surprised me in a number of ways. To be fair, it is the first sports title I have played on the PSP. Most of this can be attributed to the fact that it seemed rather pointless given how far sports gaming has come on the home consoles since the SNES days. I'd just play my sports on one of the bigger consoles. However, this PSP game was still remarkably playable, even compared to titles for the big guys.
