Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (DS)

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review (DS)

Reviewed on February 03, 2008

As Puzzle Quest opens, the citizens of medieval fantasy land Etheria are merrily rejoicing in having gone for hundreds of years without an undead invasion, and if you don’t already know where this is going then this must be your first RPG; in which case, welcome to the genre!

Contra 4 (DS)

Contra 4 review (DS)

Reviewed on January 25, 2008

Heroes aren't what they used to be. There haven't been any good, mind-blowingly badass characters in years. Sure, there's the occasional exception like Solid Snake, but the vast majority of today's protagonists are either a bunch of generic gunmen clad in fancy armored suits or whiny, self-absorbed, spiky-haired teenagers. So we get better stories and understand these new characters' perspectives and motivations. That doesn't necessarily make a good game. What happened to guys like Mike Haggar,...

World Snooker Championship: Season 2007-08 (DS)

World Snooker Championship: Season 2007-08 review (DS)

Reviewed on January 19, 2008

I lost my game 15-80, owing my points to a few lucky “Smash & Hope” shots and a high break of eight when I managed to pot a red and then the black. The few shots I took only really existed to draw the ire of the commentator who had heaped nothing but praise on my opponent. This is because the control scheme can politely be described as ‘tricky’.

MX vs. ATV Untamed (DS)

MX vs. ATV Untamed review (DS)

Reviewed on January 15, 2008

I wasn’t prepared for such a devastating trip through the portable chop-shop. I only managed to squeeze about four minutes of reckless fun before Untamed and its constricted tracks morphed into an exercise in repetition. There’s a fine line where a game stops being challenging and starts feeling like work.

Crazy Pig (DS)

Crazy Pig review (DS)

Reviewed on January 07, 2008

Crazy Pig is a bit of an enigma, and by an enigma I mean a flat-out lie. Billed as a dual game that allows you to raise a piglet from scratch and play a slew of mini-games, the title only really delivers on the latter promise. The raising of your porker is little more than throwing food and drink at it when the hunger and thirst levels are low, making a fuss of it when it's sad or cleaning the messy little bugger periodically.

Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command (DS)

Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command review (DS)

Reviewed on January 01, 2008

Plasma cannons were so utterly devastating to an area that I didn’t have to bother hitting the target. Walls and barricades became momentary nuisances as my squad razed the battlefield. With the plasma cannon’s range I avoided Overwatch and stomped through mission after mission with barely a scuff on my armor.

Mega Man ZX Advent (DS)

Mega Man ZX Advent review (DS)

Reviewed on December 30, 2007

With the Mega Man series quickly approaching a triple-digit number of games, it's no secret that the Blue Bomber has been in an absolutely ridiculous number of games. It's also no secret that many of the hero's recent entries have been noticeably lacking for one reason or another. Mega Man ZX Advent represents a return to grace for the series and is one of the most enjoyable action-adventure titles on the DS.

Harvest in the Heartland (DS)

Harvest in the Heartland review (DS)

Reviewed on December 29, 2007

Harvest in the Heartland is surprisingly fun for the first few hours, and hardcore Harvest Moon nuts may want to give it a look just out of curiosity, to see how an American developer approaches what has until now been an exclusively Japanese genre.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS)

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass review (DS)

Reviewed on December 28, 2007

When Nintendo tries something new with the Zelda series, it usually pays off. Moving to three dimensions in Ocarina of Time resulted in what many consider to be the best Zelda game of all time, and experimenting with an ultra-cute graphical style worked surprisingly well in The Wind Waker. Nintendo's at it again in the direct sequel to The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass. What sets this apart from past games is that the entire g...

Mario Kart DS (DS)

Mario Kart DS review (DS)

Reviewed on December 22, 2007

This game is a great addition to the whole Mario Kart series and I think that it's one of the best. I enjoyed this game a lot and I definitely got what I paid for. Not only is this game single player, but multi player too. Single card, multi card, and Wi-Fi are all available on this game so whether or not your friends have it, they'll still be able to appreciate the fun that this provides. However, on Wi-Fi, there isn't as much detail as there is with multi/single card download play. When people...

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS)

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass review (DS)

Reviewed on December 21, 2007

As each Zelda game releases there seems to be a celebration among gamers. I’m not a person to miss a Zelda game and I went through a roundabout way of playing this game. I bought the game despite I didn’t have a working DS. After asking some buddies from afar to send me their DS’s I managed to acquire one. A Link to the Past is my all-time favorite game in the series while Wind Waker is probably my favorite 3D adventure. When I first saw the trailer to Phantom Hourglass with Wind Waker visua...

Drawn to Life (DS)

Drawn to Life review (DS)

Reviewed on December 21, 2007

I’m a sucker for a solid create-a-character mode, to the point where it often distracts me from getting anything else done in a game. I could make wrestlers for hours without doing any actual wrestling, or spend a day assembling a football team full of wide receivers that are seven-foot-four, 400 pounds, and can outrun a Kenyan. And it isn’t just sports games that reel me in – games that rely solely on the user to create the protagonist don’t escape this curse, either. I couldn’t tell you the ma...

Heroes of Mana (DS)

Heroes of Mana review (DS)

Reviewed on December 21, 2007

It's been proven time and time again that Square-Enix cannot make anything that isn't a Final Fantasy style RPG. They had Ergheiz, the horrid FF-based attempt by Square to make a fighting game. They had Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, where 99% of the fun value was drawing bad MSPaint comics portraying Marche as a villain. And now, finally, Square releases a third abortion, based off Secret of Mana and it's sequel. Heroes of Mana is at best Starcraft with a thin Squaresoft shell over it. At worst...

Naruto: Path of the Ninja (DS)

Naruto: Path of the Ninja review (DS)

Reviewed on December 19, 2007

If you are not a Naruto fan, allow me to explain some of the premise behind it: a young hyperactive ninja named Naruto Uzumaki wants to claim the title of Hokage, which would make him the greatest ninja in his village of Konohogakure. In doing so, he becomes part of a three-man rookie squad lead by a jonin, an elite ninja, who go on various missions to earn money for the village’s economy and increase their own skills. One of young Naruto’s first missions brings him face-to-face with a philosoph...

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations review (DS)

Reviewed on December 18, 2007

Phoenix Wright just can't seem to catch a break. Not even a year after the second game in the fan-favorite lawyer series was released, Wright returns in what is his strongest game yet. The third installment, Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations, is a fantastic conclusion to the trilogy that fans of the series will love.

Picross DS (DS)

Picross DS review (DS)

Reviewed on December 18, 2007

Picross is a surprisingly veteran puzzle series, one that has spanned Nintendo consoles since the days of the Game Boy and SNES, and has now touched down on the DS under the guise of the Touch Generations series for the system. With the uncontrolled explosion of crossword and sudoku titles for the handheld, can Picross provide enough incentive for gamers to pick up, learn and adore yet another puzzle game? Do the DS features give it enough reason for existing fans to invest time and money into a...

Contra 4 (DS)

Contra 4 review (DS)

Reviewed on December 17, 2007

Contra 4 is probably the hardest game I've ever wanted to review. On one hand, it's incredibly stupid to dock a game points for being too hard - case in point, the infamous case of an IGN staff member that gave God Hand a 3/10 because he set the difficulty too high and the game kicked his ass. Yet, in this case, it's the difficulty that keeps Contra 4 from being anywhere near as good as Contra 3 was.

Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Burning Earth review (DS)

Reviewed on December 13, 2007

For example, The Burning Earth picks up right after a large battle against the Fire Nation and has Aang and his two compatriots, Sokka and Katara, off to train in the ways of Earthbending. If this last sentence read like a foreign language, Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Burning Earth is not the game for you (unless you have a child, cousin, niece or nephew under the age of 10 to explain things).

Left Brain Right Brain (DS)

Left Brain Right Brain review (DS)

Reviewed on December 10, 2007

After you've completed a set of exercises, the game will present a handy little chart that shows where you've proven your skills lie. Both left and right hand are rated, so you can see what difference there really is. For the most part, that's the hook behind the whole game. You're essentially playing just another Brain Age clone, only this one actually has a unique purpose that helps it stand apart from the crowded field of peers.

Mega Man ZX (DS)

Mega Man ZX review (DS)

Reviewed on December 08, 2007

If there is one word that can sum up the ongoing Mega Man series, it's "consistent". The series has spawned many games over the years and it consists of a few sub-series like the classic series, the X series and the Zero series. It has also been a very consistent series in many ways. First of all, the quality of the games is usually on a high level concerning action-platformers, bar a few. Second, the series is also known for its very consistent approach in its core gameplay...
