Hydro Thunder (Dreamcast)

Hydro Thunder review (DC)

Reviewed on July 14, 2005

Yes, Hydro Thunder employs what some have described as the rubber-band sort of mentality. Here, though, it’s worse than ever. It doesn’t matter if you have the best time anyone has ever managed when playing the game. There’s about a 70% chance you’ll rank fourth or worse. That’s just how the game works. Completion times are irrelevant.

Ikaruga (Dreamcast)

Ikaruga review (DC)

Reviewed on May 13, 2005

A collage of emotion pours from your body the first time you witness an insurmountable wall of bright, glowing bullets looming closer and closer to your ship. The bullets are so packed together, the metallic background disappears, and all you can see is a school of menacing bullets.

Giga Wing (Dreamcast)

Giga Wing review (DC)

Reviewed on May 08, 2005

While it’s true that you can hang near the bottom of the screen and weave like nobody’s business, such tactics aren’t nearly as much fun as worming your way right into the thick of things. Take out a foe from a distance and you can gather small icons that drift through the air. Really move in for the kill and as your adversary bursts into flames, massive remnants gravitate toward you and boost your score into the stratosphere.

Bangai-O (Dreamcast)

Bangai-O review (DC)

Reviewed on May 05, 2005

Welcome to BANG’AI-O!. Some would say they were playing Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh, but they would be playing a Japanese Nintendo 64 cartridge, while you are in fact experiencing the sumptuous thrills of a Sega Dreamcast GD-ROM disc. This is the game where you (yes, you) can pilot GIANT ROBOT BANG’AI-O! to victory over the forces of evil.

Looney Tunes: Space Race (Dreamcast)

Looney Tunes: Space Race review (DC)

Reviewed on April 30, 2005

The game depends too much on those gag items for its own good. There are moments where things get downright frantic and every racer seems to be throwing down anvils and storm clouds like they’re going out of style. Racing jets are piling up everywhere and flying off the edge, and really it’s either a total blast (because you’re surviving) or it’s frustrating (because you’re not). It seems there are no in-betweens.

Chaos Field (Dreamcast)

Chaos Field review (DC)

Reviewed on April 29, 2005

From your very first encounter with a narrow warship to the nondescript battle station that kicks off your last hurrah, there's a distinct lack of anything noteworthy, let alone inspired.

Crazy Taxi 2 (Dreamcast)

Crazy Taxi 2 review (DC)

Reviewed on April 02, 2005

Ya know, I used to hate Crazy Taxi 2, thinking it didn't live up to the first game's standards. So with that mindset, I was ready to bash the game in this review; but then, I started playing it again. And to my surprise, it's not as bad as I'd originally thought. Hell, it's about as equal to its predecessor, give or take a few differences. That's a good thing and, unfortunately, a bad thing.

The House of the Dead 2 (Dreamcast)

The House of the Dead 2 review (DC)

Reviewed on March 10, 2005

House 2 takes the "living dead" theme and runs with it, creating a far, FAR more enjoyable shooting experience than Romero's horrific magnum opus Daikatana. While this game is "only" an on-rails shooting bonanza, the levels have been designed with the care one might expect from an FPS (or more care, if the FPS in question is that trainwreck Isle of the Dead). Doors can be unlocked with keys, rescued civilians will lead you down alternate paths, and zombies will drag you into hidden sewer tunnels!

Spawn: In the Demon's Hand (Dreamcast)

Spawn: In the Demon's Hand review (DC)

Reviewed on March 08, 2005

Spawn: In the Demon's Hand had a more than fair chance to impress me. The designs of the immortal characters are both varied and inspired; the frail sharpshooter, the angel of death, the jester that transforms into a raging behemoth — they're all quite inspired, and I wanted to like them and their game. But I don't.

WWF Royal Rumble (Dreamcast)

WWF Royal Rumble review (DC)

Reviewed on March 08, 2005

A few months ago, I finally received the latest issue of EGM in the mail, and I was looking through it when I saw a preview for a certain game that seemed rather interesting to me. WWF Royal Rumble, the second WWF game (but first console only) to appear on the DC was the name of it, and it sounded rather interesting to me, because I have always been a big fan of the World Wrestling Federation, and a majority of their games have turned out to be classics.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (Dreamcast)

Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes review (DC)

Reviewed on March 08, 2005

When I used to make regular trips to the atcade, I used to play Marvel vs Capcom a lot. Since I am a huge fan of 2D fighting games, especially ones made by Capcom, I was really excited about the game. Featuring all of my favorite Marvel and Capcom charcaters, ranging from Magnetto to Mega Man, I knew I was going to love the game. And the Arcade version did not disappoint. A few months later I learned that Marvel vs Capcom was coming for both the Sega Dreamcast and Sony Playstation video game con...

Crazy Taxi (Dreamcast)

Crazy Taxi review (DC)

Reviewed on March 08, 2005

Crazy Taxi is one of the most interesting games I have ever played. The basic premise of the game is very interesting. The object of the game is to pick up a person at one location and drive them to the next location (their desired destination) as quickly as possible. The game is very realistic, in the fact that it is just like a regular taxi cab ride (well, sort of), considering the fact that there is actually a meter counting the money the passenger owes for the cab ride.

Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast)

Phantasy Star Online review (DC)

Reviewed on January 31, 2005

Imagine playing a console game online with a bunch of friends that are named after DBZ characters. Imagine playing a game where you can communicate with just about anybody in the world. Imagine playing a game that is so incredibly addictive, you forget to eat and sleep for a three days straight. Imagine all that, and you find yourself Sonic Team's innovative installment of the old Phantasy Star series called Phantasy Star Online.

Evolution 2: Far Off Promise (Dreamcast)

Evolution 2: Far Off Promise review (DC)

Reviewed on December 24, 2004

Sometimes, you just need to take a break from playing all those "complicated" RPGs. Ya know, the ones that span over fifty or sixty hours, and have battle systems that take at least an hour or two to get used to? Yeah, those RPGs. You need to escape from them every once and awhile and play something simple, something short, and something fun. Evolution 2: Far Off Promise could've been one of those games: it's short, it's simple...... but it's not fun. Which is very unfortunate, because it...

Gunbird 2 (Dreamcast)

Gunbird 2 review (DC)

Reviewed on October 11, 2004

Just by mentioning the name Psikyo, no doubt, you'll get a mixed reaction from gamers. Some will moan and groan about how hard their shmups are, being overwhelmed by the difficulty and having to face the usual on screen madness (entire screen being filled with bullets). While others will jump for joy at the challenge, being up to the task of taking on the insanity and attempting to dodge every bullet that rains down on them. Well, Gunbird 2 is no different. It offers you the same type of ...

SoulCalibur (Dreamcast)

SoulCalibur review (DC)

Reviewed on July 12, 2004

Most competent Dreamcast fighting game reviews talk about this game mechanic or that, as though the reversals of Dead or Alive 2 are somehow superior to the reversals of Virtua Fighter 3. I suppose there's merit to that approach. However, in Soul Calibur's case, the reversal (parry) system isn't what sets the game apart from the crowd. The eight-directional mobility and high/mid/low combination systems (both of which have become 3D fighting mainstays) don't differentiate ...

Mr. Driller (Dreamcast)

Mr. Driller review (DC)

Reviewed on June 02, 2004

I never liked to play with plain blocks as a kid, and I wasn't terribly destructive either, but knock me over if I don't find joy in the ways game developers allow the populace to bash endless computerized blocks together and make them vanish. Enter Mr. Driller, a cute little potholder-faced fellow that lets you do this in several ways and scenarios. But it's his first effort, so he doesn't have the concept of fun down pat, even though he looks like he could.

Grandia II (Dreamcast)

Grandia II review (DC)

Reviewed on April 14, 2004

Do you want to know what’s uncommon? A decent Dreamcast RPG. Do you want to know what’s even rarer? A console RPG with a fun battle system. So many games in this genre have provided us with epic plotlines, lengthy sidequests and memorable characters, but I honestly can’t think of any off the top of my head that had enjoyable battles. Now that I’ve played Grandia II I don’t have to rack my brain thinking if such a game exists.
