Mateki Densetsu Astralius (Turbografx-CD)

Mateki Densetsu Astralius review (TGCD)

Reviewed on November 07, 2006

Mateki Densetsu Astralius is a promising game, and that promise almost pulled it from the slimy, slippery tar pits populated by other PC Engine fossils. But sometimes promise isn't enough.

Puyo Puyo Tsuu CD (Turbografx-CD)

Puyo Puyo Tsuu CD review (TGCD)

Reviewed on August 21, 2006

Basically, Puyo Puyo Tsuu CD is a competitive puzzle game, similar to Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo. Like any "well" puzzler, the goal is to keep your playfield clean... but in Puyo Puyo, high-scoring chain reactions cause additional slime-like Puyos to fall and infest your challenger's well.

Motoroader MC (Turbografx-CD)

Motoroader MC review (TGCD)

Reviewed on June 13, 2006

In the tradition of the legendary Super Sprint, each Motoroader race is presented in a single-screen birds' eye view, so that you can see all the racers, all the obstacles, and all the action without any view-changing or mirror-flipping nonsense. There are a few hazards like ice patches or volcanic gorges, but for the most part you'll just hold down the "accelerate" button and speed as quickly as possible through eight laps on each track.

Lords of Thunder (Turbografx-CD)

Lords of Thunder review (TGCD)

Reviewed on November 01, 2005

When you first play Lords of Thunder, it’s necessary that you increase the volume on your television considerably. Don’t worry about what your mommy and daddy down the hall will think, turn it up LOUD!! It’s the only way that you can possibly appreciate the 21-guitar salute that assaults your ear drums the instance the game is booted up. And with all the grinding and mashing going on, you would think these axes were having sex; it's a beautiful thing.

Ginga Fukei Densetsu: Sapphire (Turbografx-CD)

Ginga Fukei Densetsu: Sapphire review (TGCD)

Reviewed on October 30, 2005

Sapphire doesn't need deep weaponry. It just needs to ROCK . . . and with spotlight effects, smooth rotation, spinning polygons, lightning storms, and an unforgettable soundtrack by T's Music, it succeeds. But for all its explosive energy, Sapphire never matches the controller-gripping intensity of Gate of Thunder.

Advanced V.G. (Turbografx-CD)

Advanced V.G. review (TGCD)

Reviewed on September 05, 2005

Advanced V.G. actually tries to be a "wacky" game with "crazy" characters. I spent most of my time stone-faced, wondering who decided that parading a bunch of stereotypes across the screen qualifies as comedy. It certainly doesn't qualify as ingenuity: there's the strong girl, the bunny girl, the rave dancer girl, the glasses girl, the ninja girl, the waitress girl, the other waitress girl, the other other waitress girl, and the other other other waitress girl.

Mami Inoue: Kono Hoshi ni Tatta Hitori no Kimi (Turbografx-CD)

Mami Inoue: Kono Hoshi ni Tatta Hitori no Kimi review (TGCD)

Reviewed on August 10, 2005

As you play this Super CD that uses chip music (except for one excruciatingly long and badly-photoshopped karaoke sequence), you get to do such exciting things as LOOK, TALK, and THINK. On one of the scripted adventure paths, you get to listen to your class's entire roll call from top to bottom. Then you enjoy the excitement of looking at the clock over and over to advance the "story", because staring at the clock is the ONLY way to make time pass.

Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (Turbografx-CD)

Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo review (TGCD)

Reviewed on August 06, 2005

Dracula X strikes a masterful balance between old-school Castlevania action and all that newfangled exploration that dominates the series today as surely as our hero strikes an oaken stake into some luckless bloodsucker’s heart.

Kiaidan 00 (Turbografx-CD)

Kiaidan 00 review (TGCD)

Reviewed on April 30, 2005

Blow off the rear end of a war cruiser to reveal a tentacled skull. After you've sent gouts of fire into its mouth, the skull transforms into a trident-wielding, humanoid robot. Each boss has no shortage of attacks; this Poseidon wannabe can freeze you in place, send icy waves rippling across the ground, summon a meteor storm, or simply stab you in your big blue face.

Ai Cho Aniki (Turbografx-CD)

Ai Cho Aniki review (TGCD)

Reviewed on April 29, 2005

The first thing that you’re going to notice about this game, and this is neither good or bad but merely a fact, is that it’s full of naked men.

Puyo Puyo CD (Turbografx-CD)

Puyo Puyo CD review (TGCD)

Reviewed on January 16, 2005

The Minions of Satan came to learn the customs of the PuyoPuyo, and used this knowledge to subjugate the pitiful little blobs by forming them into like-colored sequences of four or more. This was a great and vicious evil, for when the PuyoPuyo were connected in such a manner, they would EXPLODE into tiny, gelatinous bits.

Legion (Turbografx-CD)

Legion review (TGCD)

Reviewed on January 16, 2005

Legion's not cool at all. It sucks. And the depth of the developer's blunders amounts to a lot more than the vague cop-out synopsis, "it has good ideas but just isn't fun". Legion takes reasonable ideas and makes them look dumb.

Dragon Knight II (Turbografx-CD)

Dragon Knight II review (TGCD)

Reviewed on January 10, 2005

Enter the realm of Phoenix and take a brief look at your surroundings. You’ll see them hanging around the town cemetery, serving drinks at the crowded tavern, standing by idly as transactions take place within the local shops. Girls with blonde hair, girls with blue hair, and girls with green hair. Girls dressed elegantly and girls dressed in bunny outfits. Cute girls. Sly girls. Vivacious girls. Beautiful girls. And not a man in sight.

Ai Cho Aniki review (TGCD)

Reviewed on January 09, 2005

If you've played Forgotten Worlds, you have some idea what Ai Cho Aniki is all about. Basically, I'm talking an airborne Contra, with multi-directional attacks and hand-to-hand combat . . . and naked bodybuilders.

Steam Hearts (Turbografx-CD)

Steam Hearts review (TGCD)

Reviewed on January 01, 2005

In a sea of shmups crammed with tricks, powerups, and gadgets to help wipe out the enemy, it takes a pretty damn strong hook to create lasting, vivid memories. Steam Hearts accomplishes this with ease.

Emerald Dragon (Turbografx-CD)

Emerald Dragon review (TGCD)

Reviewed on December 16, 2004

Every time I play, I find something new to marvel at. When Atolshan stops calling the elder "Pops" and refers to him as White Dragon Elder, you know Atol still blames the elder for Tamryn's departure three years prior. Little comments like that add a level of characterization matching (if not topping) the likes of Lunar.

Gate of Thunder (Turbografx-CD)

Gate of Thunder review (TGCD)

Reviewed on July 25, 2004

Gate relentlessly rocks hard and intense, whether it's level one's appropriate 'let's get it on' tone, or level two's melancholy 'this could get sticky' tune, or level seven's 'you know what must be done' closing track. Never before have I been so into a shooter, and perfect weapon system and engaging enemies aside, the music lends the greatest hand to selling me on this purest excitement. Pure, because there is no nostalgia at work (the game is wholly new to me), no feelings of collector's pride (I bought it manual-less and case-less), no feelings of being on the cutting edge (it's a decade old). The exhilaration is as genuine as it gets.
