The Legend of Silkroad (Arcade)

The Legend of Silkroad review (ARC)

Reviewed on July 05, 2007

Every single time a player loses a life and either starts their next one or continues the game, not only do all enemies on the screen get knocked down (a common procedure in these games), but they also lose a noticeable amount of life. Technically, it is possible for a player to defeat even the toughest bosses in this game WITHOUT lifting a finger. Sure, it’d be completely lame for anyone to consider this an acceptable way to win fights — but the simple fact it’s possible to advance through powerhouse foes in this manner is shocking to me.

Metal Slug (Arcade)

Metal Slug review (ARC)

Reviewed on July 04, 2007

In the 2020's, terrorism is a bitch. Within the army, a frothing rebel front amasses due to inaccuracies in the regular army's intelligence reports. Circa '96 this branch of the army is lead under the supervision of one General Morden, fighting off patriots with an ultimate aim to assassinate the President of the United States. Falling short on the attempted assassination, the rebel army turned their sights upon attacking the regular army soldiers in an intense civil war. The 1st and 2nd Lueite...

Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior (Arcade)

Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior review (ARC)

Reviewed on June 14, 2007

Poor Robert. He’s the secondary hero of the Art of Fighting series, but nobody really cares about him. The games are focused more on Ryo, the main hero, and his ability to kick evil’s ass throughout the city of Southtown. The only things that Robert has going for him are a vast amount of wealth, facial features worthy of a Spanish soap opera heartthrob, designer jeans (because you have to look stylish when you’re beating criminals to a bloody pulp), and the fact that Ryo’s little s...

Tekken 3 (Arcade)

Tekken 3 review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

I have played a lot of Arcade games in my lifetime. Some I have enjoyed very much, and some were the biggest waste of change I have ever wasted. The Fighting game genre has always been very well represented on the arcade scene since the explosion of Street Fighter 2 a few years back. But some of the fighting games have just been plain boring. The Mortal Kombat series, with the exception of part 2, has never really been a great fighting game series. But for every few Mortal Kombat series, there a...

Pong (Arcade)

Pong review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

We all know what Pong is by now, it's pretty much the first commercial home based game ever released. Sure, there could be a debate as to what the first ever game was, but I'm just going to go easy and not bore you with the history of this game, because you can go buy a book or read Whelkman's boring review or whatnot. Instead, I am going to tell you about Pong. I hope this doesn't disappoint you, as I am never one to bore with historical facts like the grandfather's name of the person who made ...

Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (Arcade)

Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

When I used to make regular trips to the arcade, I used to play Marvel vs. Capcom a lot. Since I am a huge fan of 2D fighting games, especially ones made by Capcom, I was really excited about the game. Featuring all of my favorite Marvel and Capcom characters, ranging from Magnetto to Mega Man, I knew I was going to love the game. And the Arcade version did not disappoint. Hell, I still play this game from time to time whenever I decide to make a trip over to the local arcade or Cici’s Pizza, si...

Total Carnage (Arcade)

Total Carnage review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

General Ahkboob is a bad, bad man. Armed with nothing but butchered English, bugging eyes, and psychotic grin, he’s converted a baby milk factory, a place normally used to feed the innocent youths of America, into a hive of scum and villainy. From this sinister lair, the madman has created an army of mutant freaks and technological abominations. He’s also kidnapped hundreds, if not thousands of reporters, tourists, and random bystanders and turned them into hostages and test subjects for his inh...

Pit-Fighter (Arcade)

Pit-Fighter review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 14, 2007

As you step into the pit, the stench of cheap beer wafts into your nose. You can’t see very far in front of you; the florescent lights overhead only give off a meager glow, leaving nothing but moving shadows where the surrounding crowds should be. But even if you can’t see the people very well, you can hear them all too clearly. Amidst the curses, racial slurs, and drunken gibberish, you can sense that these patrons are ready to see some ass-kicking. In fact, that’s exactly what you’re here to d...

Satan's Hollow (Arcade)

Satan's Hollow review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 05, 2007

To an impressionable six-year-old Christian schoolchild, this was an amazing find. After seeing Satan's full-body portrait on the side of the arcade cabinet, I couldn't help but leap into the lion's den; the prospect of defeating the devil and becoming a Bible Camp Hero was more temptation than I could resist!

Metal Slug 6 (Arcade)

Metal Slug 6 review (ARC)

Reviewed on April 16, 2007

As the wind rolls across the plains, the Peregrine Falcons Special Forces Unit ventures forth into yet another battleground. Somewhere out there in that flowing tall grass, a bunch of General Morden’s Rebel goons have set up camp. It’s not like they were careful about hiding their whereabouts; there are shell casings littering the dirt and supplies strewn about. Even the soldiers’ voices can be heard on the breeze. You’d think that getting their asses kicked so many times in the past, the Rebels...

Gals Panic 4 review (ARC)

Reviewed on April 03, 2007

You might think you know all about this type of game, in which case you’re probably some sort of perverted weirdo, but Gals Panic 4 is actually a big, bouncy departure for the series – and definitely for the better.

Pac-Man review (ARC)

Reviewed on March 01, 2007

I know what you’re thinking. Pac-Man? Survival Horror? Yes, a genre made famous by such classics as Alone in the Dark, Clock Tower, and Resident Evil actually got its start as one of the first video games ever created.

Soukyugurentai (Arcade)

Soukyugurentai review (ARC)

Reviewed on November 15, 2006

Soukyugurentai veers dangerously close to the prototypicality trap that made its technically flawless but hopelessly average ST-V sister Shienryu worthless. Raizing's creativity jumps out at you like the narrative in a Calculus textbook; I suppose the turrets and turbojets on display are about as exciting as they come, but that doesn't change the fact that they're the same turrets and turbojets you've been plowing through since Raiden II. Level backdrops are equally benign—c...

Haunted Castle (Arcade)

Haunted Castle review (ARC)

Reviewed on October 03, 2006

Don’t hate Haunted Castle just because there aren’t any candles to whip, the sub-weapons are totally lame, and Simon has blue hair. That would be silly. No, you should hate it because it’s a sadistic monster that feeds off your suffering (and pocket change).

Sly Spy (Arcade)

Sly Spy review (ARC)

Reviewed on September 10, 2006

There is a glee about Sly Spy, a maniacal urge to so blatantly steal and simultaneously disrespect the source material it pays cynical homage to, the wonderful 007 canon, that makes it a grotesque spectacle, somehow both irritating and intriguing at the same time. I’ve always appreciated poorly made side-scrolling action games that are in obvious replication of the James Bond saga (I’m one of six living fans of the campy and tedious Rolling Thunder), and I couldn’t help but ...

Mug Smashers (Arcade)

Mug Smashers review (ARC)

Reviewed on September 08, 2006

Mug Smashers, though devastatingly threatening by name, is more of a womanly slap across the cheek than any truly bruising smash. It isn’t as good as Final Fight or Streets of Rage, and certainly doesn’t appear to be too worried about it. It’s bad, and surprisingly content with that.

1944: The Loop Master (Arcade)

1944: The Loop Master review (ARC)

Reviewed on August 26, 2006

For the sixth installment in the 1942 series, Capcom decided to do something different: they let another developer make the game. Now this could've been disastrous, because the game could've been something completely different in the sense that "they just didn't get it". Or, it could've just sucked. Fortunately, the complete opposite happened, because they got Eighting/Raizing, and what you end up getting is the most intense, enjoyable "19" game to date.

19XX: The War Against Destiny (Arcade)

19XX: The War Against Destiny review (ARC)

Reviewed on August 24, 2006

19XX: The War Against Destiny is a good shoot-em-up. It does a nice job at keeping you on your toes throughout its six stages with the amount of candy-coated bullets that gets thrown your way. However, when compared to the game it followed up, 1941, you get this overwhelming feeling that 19XX took a step backwards. After that highly enjoyable game, this title seems to pale in comparison as it doesn't actually have many significant upgrades or differences that make it stand o...
