Enduro Racer (Sega Master System)

Enduro Racer review (SMS)

Reviewed on October 07, 2005

In this game of endurance, you'll be pitted against all kinds of obstacles that'll push your motorbike skills to its limits. Take for example the temple track; it starts off pretty easy, jumping off of ramps over boiling lava, but it quickly becomes a challenge. You'll enter a long hallway filled with ancient drawings, and booby-traps galore will suddenly pop out from all over: arrows fall from the ceiling, buzz saws slide out from the walls, and spikes pop out from certain tiles of the floor. O...

Baku Baku Animal (Sega Master System)

Baku Baku Animal review (SMS)

Reviewed on August 18, 2005

The majority of puzzle games are low quality rip-offs of some the genre’s finest titles. Most of them are mere imitators that don’t even come close to the sheer quality of the original title such as Oh My God ( Atlus’s Puyo Puyo clone) shows us that. Others try hard to push different a method of stacking blocks forward but fails rather miserably. Baku Baku Animal is one example of this as it produces a rather different approach to the puzzle game but proves to be dull, awkward and repet...

Zillion (Sega Master System)

Zillion review (SMS)

Reviewed on June 08, 2005

Even though the game's based on Japan's version of Lazer Tag, THIS IS NOT A LIGHT GUN GAME. It's something far more stimulating: a multi-character stealth action puzzle shooting game. If that isn't clear enough, put on your Crazy Comparison Hat and imagine a cross between Metal Gear, Zelda, Valis III, and Concentration.

Taz-Mania (Sega Master System)

Taz-Mania review (SMS)

Reviewed on April 18, 2005

That dizzyingly hyper Taz is hungry once more. Of course, anyone familiar with that cooky freak knows that when Taz's stomach rumbles, he needs something fast to go yummy in his tummy. This time, Taz disembarks to the Lost Valley; a hidden gulch bearing numerous treats that he is just dying to get his hands on.

Fantasy Zone (Sega Master System)

Fantasy Zone review (SMS)

Reviewed on March 25, 2005

A couple of nights ago, I was playing Fantasy Zone on the Master System. I leaned back in my gaming chair while in the item shop and found myself tapping my feet and drumming my fingers to the catchy music. Observing my actions, my wife asked what I was doing. So, I let her have a listen, she agreed the music was catchy and we did a little dance. It was a great, whimsical moment that likely will bring a smile to my face for many days to come.

Dynamite Dux (Sega Master System)

Dynamite Dux review (SMS)

Reviewed on March 17, 2005

Dynamite Dux was a fun, yet extremely obscure game that was released in the arcades in 1989. A cute cuddly-looking platform/beat-me-up that set out to capture the hearts and minds of arcade gamers everywhere but failed miserably. It is now a game long forgotten (despite it being barely noticed by anyone in the first place) now cast in the pile of games that didn’t quite get the attention that they sought along with other games such as “Snow Bros” and “Golden Axe warrior.” It is a shame that Dyna...

Space Harrier (Sega Master System)

Space Harrier review (SMS)

Reviewed on February 27, 2005

Being one of the first shooters released when game systems began to take over our lives, Space Harrier surely brings back the fond memories of those past evenings as a little kid sitting around our Nintendos and Sega Master Systems. Space Harrier dominated with its fast-paced gameplay and astounding visuals. Today, even after touching down on a variety of systems and returning even on the PlayStation 2, Space Harrier's legacy lives on.

Action Fighter (Sega Master System)

Action Fighter review (SMS)

Reviewed on November 25, 2004

Action Fighter was always going to be a success in the arcades. For its time, it was bright, colourful, had great highscore potential and it had great appeal for the steering wheel that you would use to control your almost suicidal vehicle. But with the steering wheel absent from this console version, it is instantly an uphill battle for Action Fighter to gain favour in the eyes of competent gamers. Action Fighter may have been quite addictive in its previous incarnation, but as with most Arcade...

Shinobi (Sega Master System)

Shinobi review (SMS)

Reviewed on October 11, 2004

Shinobi. It's one of Sega's oldest running (and surviving) franchises that has spawned many sequels (Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III), spin offs (Shadow Dancer 1&2, PS2 Shinobi, NightShade), and even a parody (Alex Kidd in Shinobi World). So, after all these years, is the original still worth playing? HELL YEAH! What's wrong with you?! A fun and challenging game that will test your timing, reflexes, and even patience, Shinobi ...

Scramble Spirits (Sega Master System)

Scramble Spirits review (SMS)

Reviewed on October 11, 2004

I wanted to play this game for the longest time. Years ago, I bought this game after my SMS was gone, and it was pretty hard to find a new Master System back then. Recently, last year, I finally had the chance to try this game out. From the looks of the screen shots on the back of the box, I assumed it would play similar to Bomber Raid, so I had high hopes for this game. Boy, was I sorely disappointed once I played it. Although, there are many similarities to Bomber Raid<...

The Ninja (Sega Master System)

The Ninja review (SMS)

Reviewed on October 11, 2004

When I played this game for the first time, I thought it was too hard and unfair at times. I kept playing up till the river bank level where I lost and just gave up on the game, considered it as bad as My Hero, and started playing another game. But recently, I started playing the game again, took the time to learn what to do, figure out what certain things do what, memorize enemies patterns, and I then realized it wasn't such a bad game after all. But it still can be hard as hell sometime...

Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi (Sega Master System)

Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi review (SMS)

Reviewed on October 11, 2004

Wow, deja vu. I was in this exact same situation when playing through The Ninja, I hated it at first, and thought the game was too unforgiving. I could get up to the end of the first stage, but then lose all my lives when I got to fighting the boss. After a couple tries, I just gave up and never attempted to beat the game. But recently, I started playing the game again and found out it wasn't so bad once I found out more stuff I can pull off with Joe. The game is still quite hard though, ...

Altered Beast (Sega Master System)

Altered Beast review (SMS)

Reviewed on October 11, 2004

Well, I'm pretty sure most of us have played the Genesis version of Altered Beast. Who can forget such moments like the beginning when the giant transparent floating guy with a crystal ball shouts out ''WISE FOM UR GWAVE''? Or when some drunken dude shouts ''POWER UP'' when you get a Spirit Ball and slowly turn into a manly man? Well sadly, most of what made that game so great is lost in this 8 bit translation, turning an already average game into a crapfest.

Psycho Fox (Sega Master System)

Psycho Fox review (SMS)

Reviewed on October 07, 2004

What images do you get when you put the words Psycho and Fox together? Possibly your mind will come up with some bizarre pictures but I bet that you won’t even come close to what the game Psycho Fox is like. When I first head of this game I was in wonder about the nature of the character that I could play. Was he an ordinary fox with simple ambitions or was it something more?

Phantasy Star (Sega Master System)

Phantasy Star review (SMS)

Reviewed on September 22, 2004

Back in the day, Phantasy Star was simply amazing. This shining Star, one of the rare role-playing games for the Sega Master System, dazzled players with gorgeous graphics, monster animations and a huge quest that took brave heroine Alis and her three companions to three separate worlds in pursuit of the evilly insane Lassic.

Shinobi (Sega Master System)

Shinobi review (SMS)

Reviewed on September 14, 2004

It’s a well known fact that arcade translations on a console will look like a slight downgrade from the original. It was a lot more so in the 16-bit era of gaming but it started very briefly on the 8-bit Sega Master System and the NES. It seemed that the majority of the games looked less superior than what they did in the arcade (especially in the 16-bit era) but they still provided the same quality of play when on a console, although it seems that the majority of actual 8-bit arcade ports looke...

Altered Beast (Sega Master System)

Altered Beast review (SMS)

Reviewed on September 14, 2004

After playing the 16-bit version of the game Altered Beast almost to death I was eager to see the 8-bit rendition of the game. Of course I wasn’t expecting much, as I knew everything that was good in the 16-bit version would probably be knocked down a few levels in this downgraded version. Sega made this game in 1988 for the arcades and as the “pack-in” game on their Sega Mega Drive system, so I guess they had to make a version on the Master System to complete the circle. This was a bad idea for...

The Cyber Shinobi (Sega Master System)

The Cyber Shinobi review (SMS)

Reviewed on July 05, 2004

It’s sad, finding a flop in a series that has produced great games, the black sheep as you will. Every series has one, even the most popular games have one, Mario had Super Mario Bros. 2, Sonic had Sonic 3D blast, Zelda had Majoras Mask and Metroid had the dreaded Metroid Prime on the Gamecube. Shinobi also had one of those bad games, the twisted and battered Cyber Shinobi released in 1990 on the Sega Master System. I was upset and disappointed, as a huge fan of the series I found this one a bit...

Wonder Boy (Sega Master System)

Wonder Boy review (SMS)

Reviewed on June 29, 2004

Wonder boy was one of Sega’s primary creations in the mid-eighties just before the emergence of Alex Kidd and the even more popular Sonic the Hedgehog. It spawned about five sequels that started on Sega’s 8-bit console and finished on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in the mid-nineties. It’s never been reborn since it’s death in 1994 with “Monster World 4”. The games tended to be platform games with some role-playing hints to it but fans remember it for it’s sword fights and fantasy where you contro...
