Trading card swapping was everywhere, rushing from school to catch the program on TV and eventually most schools banned any merchandise being brought in because of card theft. How dare they! Those were the days when everyone kept saying Pokemon would never go out of fashion…

But it doesn't have to be Mankey; it could be Ratatta. It could be Nidoran. It could be Pidgey, or Pikachu, or Geodude. There is a tendency for the Pokemon you start with to become one of your strongest, but it's not a necessity, and any Pokemon can eventually be beneficial to your six member team. Moreover, you can have well over six Pokemon; you can only carry six with you to use in battle, while the others are stored remotely and recalled from the Pokemon Centers.

So each one of these guys requires the same strategy. Lure them up or down to your level, hit the uppercut, hit the knee drop, run away before they recover and do the same thing over and over until the chap's down for the count. That's it. There are no variations to this formula and no tricks to dissuade you from using it.

At the beginning of each segment of each stage, players get to choose between Toxie and any of his four sidekicks. I can't be bothered to remember their names because all of them are, for all intents and purposes, the exact same as Toxie. All five characters are the same size, have the same mobility and fire projectiles at the same speed.

It would not be improper by this point to simply ignore a review for any game with the words “Mega Man” in the title. Despite being a series with over 100 entries, the elite group of Mega Man games which have been awarded the coveted title of “this doesn’t suck” from the gaming community is quite small, loosely consisting of Mega Man 2 and 3 for the NES and Mega Man X for the SNES. Most people would argue that the rest can be safely ignored.

Without his ability-stealing powers, Kirby’s a pretty dull hero. He can gulp down some air and fly, he can spit that air at enemies and he can swallow them and their projectiles to either shoot at other foes or eat. And that’s all. He won’t pick up a sword or hammer. He can’t emit an freezing barrier to turn foes into blocks of ice. He’ll never transform into a fast-moving, laser-shooting UFO. Kirby might not simultaneously suck and blow, but those are about the only things he is capable of doing.

I always thought that nerds on the Internet who wine “it’s all about the gameplay!” when their favorite game gets ripped on for some stupid gimmick or whatever were idiots. Obviously gameplay is the most important aspect of any game, but I would be damned if graphics, sound, replay value, etc don’t matter at all.

Besides not having color, one of the main reasons why I didn’t care for the Game Boy was because of its games. It had some solid titles, such as Bionic Commando, Castlevania, and Kirby’s Dream Land, but they were all watered-down ports of NES games. In the end most of the crap that came out for the Game Boy either sucked or was a port. This wasn’t the case with every game though. For example, in the very first world, all a player has to do is go to three castles and get a specific item from each king to open the next few floors of the tower for exploration. One king gladly does so if the party kills a local bandit living in a tiny cave. Another fights the party for his treasure in what could be considered a mini-boss fight. The third is assassinated, leaving the party to slaughter the weak usurper and claim the third item. All of this could be done in 15 minutes — if I hadn’t had to spend a good hour or so fighting monsters to earn money for equipment and to build up my humans.

Having two people there to answer questions instead of three really changes the dynamic, and not for the better. A lot of the strategy is removed. All you must do to win is beat out the one guy. That’s actually not too terribly difficult if you know the answers to a lot of trivia, as I apparently do.

Radio-controlled cars are fun little gadgets, you can drive them under normal cars, try performing stunts by going up a ramp and over pits, and freak out your family pet with one, among other things. So, of course, a game where you use a R.C. car in a race against others through hazardous courses sounds pretty cool, doesn't it? Unfortunately, despite cramming Super R.C. Pro-Am with a whole bunch of stuff, Rare manages to make one bland title.

I always assumed Kirby's Adventure was the first Kirby game, but it turns out the old cotton candy ball of fun had a previous adventure for the Game Boy. Unfortunately, the game is not a classic like its NES sequel was, but I still found myself having an enjoyable time progressing through each of Kirby Dream Land's five outstanding levels.

Take Super Mario Bros. Cut the game's 32 levels down to 12. Make two of those levels auto-scrolling shoot-'em-ups. Add in unique (but unremarkable) boss battles at the end of each world. Finally, make the whole game black-and-pea-soup-green. There's Super Mario Land.

Pop quiz: Your best friend, a pink rabbit named Babs, has just been struck by a few stars. She’s somehow gotten into her mind that she’s destined for the high life; swimming pools, paparazzi, movies stars in fast cars. Babs is a triple non-threat: She can’t sing, she can’t dance, she can’t act. So she’s in for a big letdown, most definitely. Nonetheless, she’s Hollywood-bound.
