Star Control 3 (PC)

Star Control 3 review (PC)

Reviewed on March 15, 2008

In a Bargain Bin somewhere I cannot remember, a copy of 'Star Control 3' was sitting idly. The box looked nice and the price was cheap, so I bought it even though I had never heard of it.

Imperium Romanum (PC)

Imperium Romanum review (PC)

Reviewed on March 06, 2008

This very entertaining RTS gives you the chance to manage one of the many cities that prospered under the Roman Empire, or even Rome itself, with the added advantage that nobody even tries to assassinate you.

Fallout review (PC)

Reviewed on February 28, 2008

CRPGs are all alike. You make a character then you fight some monsters. This makes your character tougher, although nothing actually changes since the monsters you now fight have increased in toughness as well. Eventually, your character becomes so tough, that there is only one monster left that can challenge you. You defeat this monster. You win the game.

MechWarrior 4: Vengeance (PC)

MechWarrior 4: Vengeance review (PC)

Reviewed on February 28, 2008

BattleMech (n): An armored combat vehicle about thirty to forty feet tall of vaguely humanoid shape, typically massing from twenty to one hundred tons. Powered by fusion reactors, 'Mechs are best suited for ground combat, although they are also capable of underwater operation as well as operation in vacuum and/or zero-g environments. A 'Mech's only true equal is another 'Mech - artillery, aircraft, and tanks are disadvantaged against them without BattleMech support or a strong advantage in nu...

Fantasy Wars review (PC)

Reviewed on February 27, 2008

What's refreshing is that the word 'strategy' isn't just in the genre's name out of some long-forgotten tradition: it must become the lynchpin of your game should you ever dream of progression.

Speedball 2 - Tournament (PC)

Speedball 2 - Tournament review (PC)

Reviewed on February 26, 2008

But underneath all the machismo and violence, Speedball is actually a rather complex game that can best be described as a cross between soccer and pinball. The goal of the players is to score points by injuring the other team, or getting the ball into the goal. You can boost the number of points you score by throwing a ball through a loop-de-loop built into the wall. Each time you do so, you get a x2 multiplayer added to any points you score, which can be reduced by the opposing team doing the same thing.

AGON: The Lost Sword Of Toledo (PC)

AGON: The Lost Sword Of Toledo review (PC)

Reviewed on February 25, 2008

If you’ve been playing the earlier Agon games this is probably a natural purchase, but don’t let lack of experience with the previous games put you off. It stands up just fine by itself, and there is a detailed codex that outlines the professor’s adventures in the past episodes if you’re so inclined. It isn’t as extravagant or exciting as many of the new-school adventures that have been hitting our shops in recent months, but The Lost Sword of Toledo is a solid package that does the important things right.

Civilization III (PC)

Civilization III review (PC)

Reviewed on February 24, 2008

Civilization 3 Complete was released in 2005. It brings together all three games of the series into one complete package. With Civ 3 complete you get the original Civilization 3, a map editor, Play the World Expansion Pack, and Conquests expansion pack. For the money there is a huge amount of strategy, and one can expect to play countless hours of addicting turn based games. Let me tell you, there is no other strategy game out there that will get you hooked and keep you playing. It's really almo...

Sam & Max 203: Night of the Raving Dead review (PC)

Reviewed on February 19, 2008

Night of the Raving Dead brings all the good things the series has been steadily building upon and then some. It improves upon the lacklustre length of Moai Better Blues, keeps the quality of the script high, and, while the puzzles are still on the easy side, they’re still a step above those seen in the first season.

Dream Day: First Home (PC)

Dream Day: First Home review (PC)

Reviewed on February 18, 2008

Dream Day: First Home is actually quite simple in design. The bulk of the game plays like someone ripped a page out of an old issue of “Highlights for Children” magazine and made it interactive. Stages provide a series of pictures—lovingly rendered scenes taken from a 'first home' and local supply shops so that they fit the overall theme—and from there you have to find items from a list before the timer expires.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 review (PC)

Reviewed on February 03, 2008

When it comes to purchasing football games these days, you’re limited to a choice between this or EA’s FIFA series. With both series settling into next-gen, PES 2008 is truly revealing Konami’s complacency towards their product and a failure to deal with matters that are a constant thorn: laggy online play, shoddy presentation and limited options, but instead make more subtle changes to the gameplay. On plus points licenses are gradually improving, plus the introduction of a new team of commenta...

Sam & Max 202: Moai Better Blues review (PC)

It even makes time to take sly shots at other games such as Portal’s teleport system, Duke Nukem’s inability to release a damn game on time and Metal Gear Solid’s over-dramatic death-scream. You know the one!

Pirates of the Burning Sea (PC)

Pirates of the Burning Sea review (PC)

Reviewed on January 26, 2008

One of the biggest problems with MMOs is repetition, not specifically the grind of gaining levels or earning money. Actually, one of the most abrasive elements of repetition is addressed in the little snippet above. With all the World of Warcrafts and Everquests and Lineages and the legions of similar games who only mix up the gameplay slightly, it's nice to see a game where with only one screenshot, you can see a big difference. Nowhere will you see dwarves with huge glowing axes, or spell casters, or half naked elf women dancing for money in town square.

Medal of Honor: Airborne (PC)

Medal of Honor: Airborne review (PC)

Reviewed on January 15, 2008

To say that Medal of Honor: Airborne is the best game in the storied Medal of Honor franchise is an understatement. Airborne just may be one of the most compelling and entertaining World War II shooters ever coded. It has taken a long time, but it seems that the developers of this franchise have finally found the means to deliver the game that they've always wanted to create - a truly cinematic World War II game that is less about realism and focused on irrational heroism.

Discipline: The Record of a Crusade (PC)

Discipline: The Record of a Crusade review (PC)

Reviewed on January 13, 2008

Long ago, some forgotten professional reviewer bemoaned the notion of a restrained hentai game. H-games should be outrageously grotesque and push the limits of good taste, he opined. Cum should fly freely across the screen. Orgies should abound. Discipline: The Record of a Crusade works towards that ideal by presenting stunning levels of repellent perversion. Where else can you watch a young lady savor a steaming bowl of rice topped with globs of semen?

Everquest II: Rise of Kunark review (PC)

Reviewed on January 12, 2008

Even when you leave the lush vegetation of Timorous Deep it becomes clear that the aspect of soloing is especially strong within the Everquest II universe, meaning you don’t need to scourge for a party before you try to take on even the simplest task. It’s an option that a lot more MMOs could do with including.

Might & Magic III: Isles of Terra review (PC)

Reviewed on January 10, 2008

Some RPGs strive to hold you by the hand from the first meetings with townspeople (''Do not forget to EQUIP your weapons and armor after buying them!'') to your final victory over the master villain (or in RPG slang, ''end boss''). In either subtle or distinct ways, the player is led from one town to another, one boss after the next, a bunch of quests in a set, clear order and if you're lucky, a couple of optional ones on the side. Then there's Might & Magic 3 which does quite the opposite. In a...

Jagged Alliance 2 (PC)

Jagged Alliance 2 review (PC)

Reviewed on January 10, 2008

The island nation of Arulco is, without a doubt, in the biggest mess it has ever been in. A mad and ruthless queen has seized control of the country and its mines, and money is her only concern. The population has been reduced to poverty, a well-funded, oversized army keeps them in check, and as the queen grows richer and richer, the once glorious country is in shambles. A rebel force exists, but lacks the weapons and the manpower to make a difference. But that's where you come in. Armed with a ...
