As I was playing 1992 Namco shooter Fighter & Attacker, one question kept popping into my mind. No, it didn’t involve me wondering how any self-respecting company could think “Fighter & Attacker” would be an attention-grabbing name — this was a far more important matter. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien really comes alive in the second half. While the prologue always stuck Takayuki with Haruka, you can match him up with any of seven girls here, although some — like Haruka's really cute little sister Akane — are a lot tougher to catch than others.

Kuro Miyabi stands at the top of his field. Place him in charge of any enterprise, no matter how anemic, and he'll turn a quick profit. Although he possesses a little skill, his success is not a result of any refined entrepreneurial acumen, but because he's willing to do whatever it takes. Blackmail and intimidation are his methods of choice, but really any scheme will do, the dirtier the better. Kuro is a goon, and damn proud of it.

I used to think side scrolling platformers were a surefire key to success. Y’know, the Mario clones - where jumping is key and an emphasis on avoiding enemies or engaging in close range combat. Heck, when all you ever played was Mario and Sonic, you’d probably think the same thing. And yes, there are others that do it well too. But somehow, Rayman does not manage to catch the same instant success feel that Mario and Sonic did. It isn’t even a problem with shoddy programming or anything like that...

It is an MMORPG at its finest and the first of such to intrigue me in such a fashion since Asheron's Call. As previously mentioned, it is the obsession you have while playing the hero or villain you have created in these games, that overshadows the pre-defined protagonists of its single player predecessors.

Arbitrary catch-all labels they may be, but style and substance are useful terms. I'd like to submit a theory regarding these famously independent elements of game design: style and substance are not only separate, but opposing. I submit that slavish devotion to sumptuous visuals and high atmosphere can result in a game with a sensory bite that sullies your experience while it enriches it.

One of the golden rules of game development is that if a game is successful, rip-offs inevitably follow. Sometimes it's just a few good elements that are taken to be incorporated in a different game, and sometimes an attempt is made to reinvent the same game completely; and it's this latter category that usually goes wrong. Moon Buggy is a prime example of a game that tries to emulate a successful predecessor - Moon Patrol, in this case - and falls short by a mile.

The only thing that made Quasar noteworthy on my collection of C64 floppies was that it was the only game I had that started with a Q. When you are six years old, that fascinates you.
