Legends of the Diamond review (NES)Reviewed on August 19, 2003Hearing old baseball players and analysts like Joe Morgan on television waxing poetically about the “good ole days” of professional baseball and players playing “for the love of the game” and not “multi-million dollar contracts” can warp the distinction between perception and reality. False beliefs, such as teams winning with “clutch” hitting, defense, and determination are held up and idolized by the paid professionals who play and cover the game of baseball. Despite recent hard work by stati... |

Gemfire review (NES)Reviewed on August 17, 2003In any other game, sitting around waiting for a chance to cultivate your fields might not seem all that interesting. But in Gemfire, it can quickly become an obsession. Then you realize you were a moron to plant so much corn because it really didn't do you all that much good after your neighbor stomped all over your farmers with his massive army. |

Puss 'N Boots: Pero's Great Adventure review (NES)Reviewed on August 08, 2003Just when you're starting to really enjoy yourself, you realize that you've reached its conclusion. Then you look back and realize with horror that it only took you perhaps 15 minutes to do so. From the first stage to the last, they are quick little jaunts almost without exception. The vehicle rides are all quite fun, but they end almost as soon as they begin, and there are arguably too many of them. |

Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 review (NES)Reviewed on August 04, 2003The first level is pretty good, a promising start for the game. The heroes run through a restaurant in an effort to diffuse a bomb someone has set in the building. It's not a match for the first stage in the first game, but it's good, a promising start. Unfortunately, things never really get any better. |

Wrecking Crew review (NES)Reviewed on April 27, 2003In spite of the fact that it features Mario, the world's most famous plumber, Wrecking Crew never managed to pull itself out of the ditch of unjustly unknown games. Yet, while boasting nothing outlandish, Wrecking Crew is a good time-waster that everybody would enjoy if he'd just care to give it enough time. Of course, in order to be able to do so, he must first find the game itself, which, I'll admit, isn't a very easy task nowadays. |

Castlevania review (NES)Reviewed on April 26, 2003Castlevania, considered by many as one of the best action series Konami came up with, made its debut on the NES when Simon Belmont, a guy with time and guts to spare, thought about defying Lord Dracula in his old and crumbling castle. Like most gamers who indulge in action games (who doesn't?), I too am a fan of the Castlevania series. It may not look like it since I'm about to bash the original title, but I adored the SNES and Genesis titles, and while I wasn't particularly enthralled wi... |

Puss 'N Boots: Pero's Great Adventure review (NES)Reviewed on April 16, 2003I have enjoyed a wide variety of games over the years, ranging from some of the popular favorites, to some of the more unknown ones, to the very bizarre ones. I think the game reviewed here falls under the third category. Puss and Boots: Pero's Great Adventure is a weird game. It's fun, but let's face it, any game which involves a mouse trying to save a cat by going around the world is just a TAD weird, don't you think? Like I said, this game is fun as hell, and I really enjoyed it. It is one o... |

Rygar review (NES)Reviewed on April 09, 2003When asked to name their favorite video games of all time, chances are the name Rygar will not show up on most people’s lists. It was not a widely popular and recognized game when it was released in the Arcades, even though it was a pretty fun game that I enjoyed playing a lot. However, even fewer people have heard of Rygar for the Nintendo Entertainment System. And this is a true shame, in my opinion. After all, I had enjoyed playing the Arcade version of this classic game immensely, and I stil... |

Adventure Island review (NES)Reviewed on April 09, 2003I remember my cousin having a NES with 20 games some years ago. One of those games were Adventure Island. I used to want to travel 200 miles just to play the game. While I probably wouldn't do the same today, it still is a very great game. This is actually one of my all time favorite games on the NES, and I still play it a lot, even to this day. It is simply one of the most fun games I have ever played, despite the fact certain elements of it could be described as tedious or dare I say boring.... |

Dragon Power review (NES)Reviewed on April 01, 2003Dragonball was a huge series in Japan in the late 80's and early 90's. While it had not reached American shores in the same fanfare, a single game had found its way through the barrier. The game was Dragon Power. Most Americans who then found this game never really knew its roots. Years later the TV series reached American shores, but Dragon Power had died out and had become unnoticed. But the game itself was entertaining, even if the roots were unknown. It mostly resembles the more modern day G... |

The Guardian Legend review (NES)Reviewed on March 04, 2003Before the eight bit powerhouses such as the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Master System, console games were limited to a singular form of play. Generally the player would perform a certain number of tasks to complete a stage and then advance to the next level, which was pretty much the same as the previous level but with increased difficulty. Even with enhanced power most game makers chose to expand on the singular concept. Games were still in stages, but the stage boundaries became le... |

Taboo: The Sixth Sense review (NES)Reviewed on March 02, 2003In a nutshell, the premise of Rare's Taboo - The Sixth Sense: type in a well thought-out and insightful question and get mindless gibberish back. Taboo claims to be able to see your future via tarot card fortune telling. How drawing upon a machine with the processing capabilities of a peanut accomplishes this is beyond me. |

Dragon Warrior review (NES)Reviewed on March 01, 2003Enix's Dragon Warrior never was a great game, but over the years it has accumulated legendary status. The only legendary aspect of the game was Nintendo Power's promotional giveaway juggernaut. As a result, undue claims have garnered, from the inane (''This is the game which turned the crank of the RPG machine!'') to the just plain incorrect (''This is the first ever RPG!''). Still, Dragon Warrior is the first Japanese style role playing game to be released in the United States, and, due to i... |

Panic Restaurant review (NES)Reviewed on February 28, 2003A fun, well-executed game that ultimately doesn't succeed so much as it could have because it's over almost before it begins, Panic Restaurant is still a title worth playing. Particularly if you manage to find it in a bargain bin somewhere. |

Mega Man 6 review (NES)Reviewed on February 27, 2003At which point does innovation become necessary? When a long running series continues to rehash the same format, at which point should casual fans revolt over repetitiveness? This is a question that has plagued the Mega Man series. It is obviously the most flagrant offender; it dwarves even Tomb Raider in terms of games featuring remarkably similar gameplay with little innovation. When we are talking about the NES, it is clear that Mega Man 6 follows the Capcom formula –... |

Zombie Nation review (NES)Reviewed on February 18, 2003Cheesy B-quality science fiction movies apparently have their occasional videogame equivalents. Case in point: Zombie Nation, a game in which you play a leering severed head and battle American citizens who have been turned into zombies by a malevolent alien named Darc Seed. |

Contra review (NES)Reviewed on January 30, 2003Over time there have been multiple Contra titles. Contra is a sidescroller shooter in which you have an unlimited amount of regular ammo, plus powerups, in which to work your way by yourself, or with a partner, to defeat millions of foes. Contra is not an indepth game, but like many NES games it was just for fun, and it did it's purpose well. |

Darkwing Duck review (NES)Reviewed on January 27, 2003Play control is tight as can be. If you die, it's not because Darkwing Duck failed to jump where you told him to. He can hop with the best of them, grab onto beams above him, and fire several shots at a time. Switching to his special weapon is a snap, too. You'll find yourself comfortable with the controls to their fullest extent within the first five minutes of play. |
