Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GameCube)

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes review (GCN)

Reviewed on May 04, 2005

With the exception of a crate here and a computer there, not a single aspect of the original's outdated design has been altered; you can execute far more complex maneuvers now than you could during MGS1 Snake's hide-and-seek antics, but does it matter?

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes review (GCN)

Reviewed on May 02, 2005

Realization of the importance of plot in games took another giant step when Konami released it’s best-selling Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation. In the years before, storylines had been evolving slowly, getting it’s first big boost with the high sales of Final Fantasy VII, but Metal Gear Solid is what truly brought in-depth plots out of the ghetto to make a mark on the gaming world.

Viewtiful Joe (GameCube)

Viewtiful Joe review (GCN)

Reviewed on April 17, 2005

Viewtiful Joe failed to live up to its hype. I read a ton of magazine reviews on the game and I found scores of 90% and over. I checked GameFAQS (hardly the most trustworthy of places to go to for review scores) and found that amongst the fan boy trash lay reviews from quality authors giving it the thumbs up. The cover of the box had a sticker saying 93% on it, it must be something special. Unfortunately, Viewtiful Joe is nothing more than a problematic, repetitive and boring game that fills...

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes review (GCN)

Reviewed on April 13, 2005

Konami took two key ingredients to create a masterpiece. The classic Metal Gear Solid was easily the best game on the Playstation and it’s popularity was so immense that Konami decided to re-release the classic on new 128-bit software. The second part of the mix was the style and new methods introduced in Metal Gear Solid’s sequel, the sub-standard Sons of Liberty. This one was loaded with new control mechanisms and new features which enhanced the gameplay a lot. It also had breathtaking graphic...

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem review (GCN)

Reviewed on April 07, 2005

Turn on your console and you’re greeted with a grainy, evil-voiced quote from Edgar Alan Poe. As this rather cheerful quote suggests, Eternal Darkness takes its influence from that of the great literary horror novels, especially those of H. P. Lovecraft. To be honest, Eternal Darkness blatantly rips off much of Lovecraft’s Cthulu novels, and this is no bad thing for a survival horror game seeking distinction.

Tales of Symphonia (GameCube)

Tales of Symphonia review (GCN)

Reviewed on April 05, 2005

RPG titles simply don't surface much on the GameCube. The few that do trickle in every now and then are always welcome, even when they are not really all that great (example: the "remix" of Skies of Arcadia, which was not a terrible game but certainly not completely compelling). Tales of Symphonia, however, manages to stand well on its own against some of the classics....

Star Fox Assault (GameCube)

Star Fox Assault review (GCN)

Reviewed on March 23, 2005

The Star Fox team first appeared on the Gamecube in a platform game, called Star Fox Adventures. While, many considered it a quality game (and others a subpar game) it never really felt like a true Star Fox game, despite the occasional flying (simple stages). Namco, however, introduced the true sequel to the classic Star Fox games, that game being Star Fox Assault. While it does have its faults, overall it keeps itself true to many of the key aspects of the frist two Star Fox game; that aspect b...

Resident Evil 4 (GameCube)

Resident Evil 4 review (GCN)

Reviewed on March 11, 2005

My first day at work consisted of washing countertops and cleaning dishes. Rookie cop Leon Kennedy wasn't so on the safe side. He arrived on the job expected to be berated for tardiness by his superior officer, but ended up battling his way through hordes of mindless zombies in the mountain resort Raccoon City. The Umbrella Corporation, an international pharmaceutical company that was the backbone of Raccoon City’s economy, had secretly been experimenting with viruses that changed inner biologic...

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time / Master Quest review (GCN)

Reviewed on February 28, 2005

Every Zelda fan that preordered the Wind Walker was treated to a bonus disk that was sure to excite each and every one of them. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest is a rehash of the N64 classic that touched gamers everywhere. While this certainly is not a new game entirely, it does give some added incentive to relive the groundbreaking elements that shaped so many games today.

WWE Day of Reckoning (GameCube)

WWE Day of Reckoning review (GCN)

Reviewed on February 14, 2005

I came into WWE Day of Reckoning (or DoR, whichever you prefer) expecting the best wrestling game I’ve ever played. Its successor, WWE WrestleMania XIX provided the best actual wrestling experience in a game. Chain wrestling, diverse counter wrestling, believable technical wrestling, and brutal hardcore warfare were all made possible thanks to Yukes trying new things, and improving things, like sound effects, to plateaus they had never been before. It’s a shame its sequel fell short of even m...

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean review (GCN)

Reviewed on February 04, 2005

The Ocean; a vast area of water over millions of square kilometers, many points reaching a depth of under thirty kilometers below sea level. Creatures survive in spite of water pressure that would make a human explode in under a thousandth of a second, utter lack of sunlight, and very little botanical wildlife. Despite man’s subjugation of land over tens of thousands of years, the Ocean is a mysterious place that we know little of.

Resident Evil 4 review (GCN)

Reviewed on February 02, 2005

Ok, can I just say one thing? Wow. Just... Wow. This game is a lot better than I thought it was going to be, to be completely honest. I mean, there were so many people talking about how this game was going to be so different from the other ones, that it would completely change the series. Well, I don't think it completely changes the series, so yay! Also, I know there were trailers floating around the internet. I have a trailer on my computer that shows what look like shadowy monsters and it tal...

Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube)

Super Smash Bros. Melee review (GCN)

Reviewed on January 20, 2005

Nintendo decided to take a trip down memory lane again. After the success of Super Smash bros on the N64, they probably thought it would be a good idea to revamp that popular game on the big N’s new (at the time) creation. After gathering the key stars and grouping them together for the first encounter, Nintendo decided to go even further into their library of forgotten and not so forgotten classics. The N64 version provided the player with a substandard cast of fighters, focusing on the true ...

Dragon Ball Z Budokai review (GCN)

Reviewed on January 07, 2005

I love Dragon Ball Z and I always get harassed by my parents and my girlfriend about it. It’s something that seems to be part of my life nowadays and no matter how many times I get the third degree about my pile of video cassettes and Graphic novels I still find myself reading them or watching the show quite frequently. However, when it comes to playing Dragon Ball games, I’m usually a little wary. I’ve played a good few of them on various systems, some of them have been great fun like DBZ: ...

Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO review (GCN)

Reviewed on January 04, 2005

Capcom hit the big time with their “Street Fighter 2” series, a collection of fighting games that probably made fighting games what they are nowadays. Ryu and Ken are almost household names now, Street Fighter 2 rocked the gaming world back in the early nineties and is still a force today, even after all of this time. SNK were quite prolific in their creations but never reached the true status that Capcom achieved. They developed a few great fighting game series that made it big like “The King o...

Sonic Heroes review (GCN)

Reviewed on January 02, 2005

According to Jak and Ratchet, platformers should have big freakin guns and lots of vehicles and stuff. Sly says we should have stealth. And even the king, Mario himself, seems to think we should spend our time collecting stars. I feel like I'm Charlie Brown walking amid all the aluminum trees, searching for the true Christmas spirit, or platforming spirit as the case may be. Doesn't anyone know what platforming's all about? And then I see it, the only real Christmas tree there. Sure, it's ...

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes review (GCN)

Reviewed on December 31, 2004

The rest of the expectedly excellent bosses pose mighty challenges, too, and reside in their usual "OMG why here?" locations to boot. From Chyakka, a possessed moth that periodically dips into the dark world's ubiquitous poisonous fluids for an immense burst of strength, to the Alpha Blogg, an underwater predator that attempts to ram Samus into oblivion, the only thing more imposing than their visages are the actual methods needed to defeat them.
