Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP)

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops review (PSP)

Reviewed on January 01, 2007

Abandoning the idea of a Digital Graphic Novel, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops finds Konami attempting a true Metal Gear adventure for the PSP. The first familiar sign: a heavy reliance on third-person stealth. There’s also plenty of CQC, stylish philosophical discussion and a narrative that boasts almost as many twists and outlandish villains as Snake Eater.
Superman Returns (Xbox 360)

Superman Returns review (X360)

Reviewed on December 26, 2006

Superman Returns is a frustrating experience because the mechanics for a successful take on this mistreated franchise are all in place. It actually feels like you’re Superman because you’re the one hurrying across Metropolis to save people and protect the city. The game doesn’t drop you off at set-points or curtail your powers (save for a stamina bar). You’re allowed to lift and throw just about everything, set fire to cars and perform super-human combos. The enemy encounters may grow tiresome due to the extreme repetition, but the comic, action-packed duels are epic good vs. evil duels. At first.
Call of Duty 3 (Xbox 360)

Call of Duty 3 review (X360)

Reviewed on November 24, 2006

Unlike its predecessor, I can’t remember many dramatic, pivotal battles from Call of Duty 3. This time, instead of dipping in and out of the war, you take part in the Normandy Breakout. CoD 3 attempts to involve you in this extended conflict by using lengthy cut-scenes to push forward its story. I still don’t care about the names, though! I would’ve rather listened to a History Channel interlude on the state of the battle than a Scottish SAS man insult a French resistant fighter. Save the heroes and villains for Spielberg, Treyarch.
Death Jr. II: Root of Evil (PSP)

Death Jr. II: Root of Evil review (PSP)

Reviewed on November 06, 2006

This is not a shocking new step for the platformer, but what makes Death Jr. II fun is its light-hearted, irreverent approach. We’re not dealing with another “hip” animal mascot -- we’re dealing with the Grim Reaper’s son!
Dead Rising (Xbox 360)

Dead Rising review (X360)

Reviewed on September 14, 2006

I had reservations about Dead Rising before I bought it -- before I reached Steven Chapman’s twisted (yet very clean) supermarket even. As compulsive as the mass-slaughter of hoards of zombies may be, this premise screamed “one trick pony". It’s all very well squeezing a kazillion of these undead monsters on screen at once, but survival horror is about more than beheading zombies all day.
Texas Hold 'Em (Xbox 360)

Texas Hold 'Em review (X360)

Reviewed on September 03, 2006

The question here should not be whether Texas Hold ‘Em is fun or not, it should be whether TIK Games did a faultless job of converting it to the Live Arcade environment. The answer to that question is no.
Ossu! Tatakae! Ouendan! (DS)

Ossu! Tatakae! Ouendan! review (DS)

Reviewed on August 27, 2006

Ossu! Tatake! Ouendan is as weird a game as you could envisage, but after you’ve experienced its tense, chaotic action and warmed to its eccentric cast you’ll keep coming back to improve your score and relive the artistic comic book plots. Few hand-held games have exacted this kind of hold on me, but then few games ask you to tap circles to the beat so three cheerleaders -- male cheerleaders -- can inspire people to succeed.
Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Demon Seal (DS)

Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Demon Seal review (DS)

Reviewed on June 15, 2006

I envisaged an epic struggle through the colourful floors of Monster Tower, fighting ancient beasts with fearsome spells. In hindsight, my expectations were a little high.
