Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (GameCube)

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! review (GCN)

Reviewed on October 18, 2005

When the first shots of Double Dash were released to the world, it looked as if it was going to add something fresh and inspiring to an often tired out genre. The premise of having two drivers and the usual Mario Kart craziness was a sure selling point. I tend to dislike most racing games due to their dull drag down to realism. If I’m going to play a racing game, it’s going to have something that allows me to shoot down other racers with over the top weaponry, move through creative courses at ...
Sonic Gems Collection (GameCube)

Sonic Gems Collection review (GCN)

Reviewed on October 10, 2005

Gems Collection picked up where Mega Collection left off. The original compilation featured four of the top Genesis titles and a slew of not so great games. This one changes things by collecting some of the lesser-known games as well as a small selection of the better Game Gear titles. With the first ever console ports of the superb Sonic CD and the surprisingly entertaining Sonic Championship, this collection proved to me a lot more valuable than the previous Mega Collections, due to the fac...
Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut (GameCube)

Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut review (GCN)

Reviewed on October 10, 2005

DX takes the original Dreamcast title Sonic Adventure, mixes it with some basic graphical brush ups, some old Game Gear games and a new mission mode to help ensnare gamers who missed out on the original adventure in 2000. Those who finished it back then will be disappointed, unless you really enjoyed it.(Emphasis on the “really.”) Truth be told, it does take the original game and adds on a heap of extra playtime by throwing all of these missions and Game Gear. It just sucks that n...
Donkey Kong Jr. (NES)

Donkey Kong Jr. review (NES)

Reviewed on October 04, 2005

I don’t blame Mario for being pissed. I mean, if a giant ape came up, grabbed my girlfriend and ran away with her under his fat sweaty arm, I’d be pretty cheesed off too. Extracting revenge for this heinous act, Mario has kidnapped Donkey Kong and mysteriously managed to the lock the ape up. He’s also separated Donkey from his only son and when the brave little tyke sets out to rescue is father, Mario tries to kill him by throwing little crocodiles at him. Don’t you think that’s rather harsh?...
Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy)

Kirby's Dream Land review (GB)

Reviewed on October 02, 2005

If you’re looking for a perfect “pick up and play” title then Kirby’s Dream Land will happily fill that role. It’s not rife with challenge nor is it the most complicated game you’re going to play but it sure is something that will pleasantly keep you entertained for over an hour or so. Kirby doesn’t push himself too hard to rival the old retro hotshots that we spent so much time with yesteryear but it still provides a fun and pleasant experience that is rather memorable. Don’t expect i...
Knuckles' Chaotix (Sega 32X)

Knuckles' Chaotix review (32X)

Reviewed on September 24, 2005

Spin-offs are usually never a good thing. Sure, we have some special cases like Frasier but the majority of the time, the spin-off rarely surpasses the original. In fact, the majority of these spin-offs flop horribly (take the recent Friends spin off Joey for a perfect example) but once in a blue moon, you get a spin-off that not only rivals its originator but also actually surpasses it in certain ways.
Duck Hunt (NES)

Duck Hunt review (NES)

Reviewed on September 16, 2005

I hate hunting. I don’t see the point of walking through the woods all day with your 12-gauge, shooting innocent animals for pure sport. If you’re going out shooting ducks because you think it’s fun is a little sadistic for my liking, if it was for survival purposes then it wouldn’t bother me but the fact of killing an animal just for a thrill is a little primitive.

SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom review (XBX)

Reviewed on September 04, 2005

What SVC Chaos does is offer a few hours of fun for the hardcore fan. If you’ve never played any of Capcom’s better efforts then stop reading this review, go out to your nearest game store and pick up a copy of Capcom vs. SNK 2. If you’ve already played that awesome game and want to delve further into the series, then picking SVC Chaos may satisfy your cravings. However, if you wanted more grooves, a cool character ensemble and awesome bosses, then you will be sorely disappointed by Pl...
Axelay (SNES)

Axelay review (SNES)

Reviewed on August 31, 2005

When it comes to this genre, I can safely say that I am no expert. Taking advice from veterans and shooter connoisseurs and after being chronically depressed by the marathon levels in Space Megaforce, I came across Laxe.
Conker: Live & Reloaded (Xbox)

Conker: Live & Reloaded review (XBX)

Reviewed on August 25, 2005

Conker: Live and Reloaded will be a real treat for those who dug his original N64 outing. I never played it but I was hounded constantly about its hilarious take on adult themes in a cartoon like environment. Due to my uncaring attitude towards the N64, I never experienced the original Conker for myself and for years was barraged by my sixty-four fan friends about how great Conker’s Bad Fur Day was. I won’t lie, placing adult themes and situations in a cartoon world is a rather original conce...
Baku Baku Animal (Sega Master System)

Baku Baku Animal review (SMS)

Reviewed on August 18, 2005

The majority of puzzle games are low quality rip-offs of some the genre’s finest titles. Most of them are mere imitators that don’t even come close to the sheer quality of the original title such as Oh My God ( Atlus’s Puyo Puyo clone) shows us that. Others try hard to push different a method of stacking blocks forward but fails rather miserably. Baku Baku Animal is one example of this as it produces a rather different approach to the puzzle game but proves to be dull, awkward and repet...
Metal Slug 3 (Xbox)

Metal Slug 3 review (XBX)

Reviewed on August 13, 2005

Not only does Metal Slug 3 offer the player an outrageous run-n-gun experience, it also shows the player the harsh and depressing reality of war…well, not really. Unless you count giant crabs, zombies, mutated Venus flytraps and eels called Wanda as the reality of war. If you do, then Metal Slug 3 may be the most realistic war game you will ever play. On the other had, if you do think this, I recommend you visit a psychologist, or, better yet, wait for four years so I can give you a free...
Alisia Dragoon (Genesis)

Alisia Dragoon review (GEN)

Reviewed on August 05, 2005

Alisia Dragoon may not be God’s gift to action gamers but it still packs a punch. Not only does it star a hot anime chick (Well, some might think that) but also it has the best method of pest control I’ve seen. Who would’ve thought that sweeping bolts of lightening are an effective method for destroying a bunch of mangy insects?

Capcom Fighting Evolution (Xbox)

Capcom Fighting Evolution review (XBX)

Reviewed on August 01, 2005

I think that Capcom wanted Capcom Fighting Jam to be the ultimate 2-D fighting experience. It combined five of their best fighting series (three of them are actually different variations of Street Fighter) and merged them into one game. It sounds like a Capcom fan’s dream come true but the horrible truth reveals that CFJ is an awkward and rushed fighter that does nothing to stand out from the crowd.
Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone (Xbox)

Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone review (XBX)

Reviewed on July 26, 2005

Demon Stone drops you into an interesting predicament. Instead of the typical fantasy romp, which puts you in a quest to defeat some evil Dark Lord ® it throws you in the middle of a war between two beastly tyrants, who wish to wipe each other out before they can claim the world as their own. It also takes three warriors with their own secret tragedy that has banished them from their differing societies, intertwining their paths. It’s too bad that barely a few hours after the three heroes are ...
Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyo Toitsusen (Genesis)

Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyo Toitsusen review (GEN)

Reviewed on July 20, 2005

When you think of the excellent developer known as Treasure and their small library of Mega Drive games, which titles spring to mind? Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy are probably the two titles that instantly spring to mind which is understandable. Those two games were easily the most popular out of the handful of titles but one that truly deserves to stand side by side with those two games is another title that was pushed into the darkness of obscurity. A fighting game that boasts one of th...
Ice Climber (NES)

Ice Climber review (NES)

Reviewed on July 13, 2005

I still fail to see why the general gaming population loves so many of these retro re-releases. I was looking through the “NES Classics” series (a.k.a the 'take advantage of our fan’s stupidity' series) and found the dreaded “Ice Climber” on the roster. Ice Climber was a bad game in 1983 so no matter how many times you try to repackage it and pimp it out today, it’s still going to suck. However, after the two Eskimos made their return in Super Smash Bros. Melee with new kick ass attacks and the ...
