Pyramid review (NES)Reviewed on May 27, 2004Pyramid provides an original take on Tetris, lumping isosceles right triangles into shapes you rotate and drop into a well until it gets filled. Shapes lump into the general structure when they touch something below, and if you fill up a row in the well, it vanishes for everything above it to drop. This is a simple enough extension, and it is about as difficult as it sounds to get your bearings. Parts were so badly botched, though, that the game is an agonizing experience for anyone who w... |

Kwirk review (GB)Reviewed on April 26, 2004It's hard for puzzle games without much resolution to have the flair that helps make a game addictive, so the creators generally go in for a weird title. Kwirk tries for this, but it drops the Q, which is much weirder than stuffy old K. Oh yes, the game's a bit dull too, being a modification of the old box-push that you could have written in BASIC. It's only got thirty levels in main mode, but the later ones are extremely nasty. |

Poly Play review (ARC)Reviewed on April 13, 2004There's still a small type of disgruntled deluded folks who think that Communism could or should actually work. They overlap well with gamers: lazy slobs who want something for nothing. These amateur politicians who have that perfect political philosophy pinned down between levels of Super Mario Brothers 3 and forget it because, well, they were swept up in the life and thoughts people ought to have are sadly deluded. They probably think the government's going to hand them a bag of quarters a wee... |

Bump 'n' Jump review (ARC)Reviewed on April 12, 2004When I was young, I liked car crashes. In theory. Cars still scared me especially when I had major streets to cross, but I enjoyed signs depicting dangerous conditions on roads and dreamed of participating in an accident one day, not fully appreciating what this meant. The closest I came was falling off a Big Wheel, which ended in tears and a band-aid. Still, I certainly seemed to have more fun with cars than my mother, who preferred complaining about bad drivers and kids running out in the stre... |

NBA Jam review (GEN)Reviewed on February 03, 2004Most of us get wrapped up in our nostalgia and daydream about it to our own detriment. The programmers of NBA Jam took notes on their sporting fantasies and produced an immensely addicting game. I suspect they, too, had nerf hoops slung over closed closet doors and weren't good enough for the real thing. And felt the magic of being able to dunk--first when you jumped, then on your tiptoes--in that brief time when puberty was still wonderfully novel, when you swore that your own imaginary basketb... |

Imogen review (PC)Reviewed on January 22, 2004Freeware is the refuge of the broke of pocket. Or the tech-savvy brokenicks, at least. Oh, sure, there's ROMs and abandonware out there too, but I was over so budget enough this month that I got wary at the thought of handling anything that might have once cost money. |
