Goemon's Great Adventure (Nintendo 64) review

"Goemon is a strange game. It has childish humor combined with vulgarity and a mature plot. This is an interesting, yet nice combination. I got Geomon's Great Adventure because there were not that many good looking games coming out for Nintendo 64, and well it looked nice in Nintendo Power. I asked for it for my birthday, and I got it. I quickly popped it in and ran the beggining through. It was addicting from the start, and a great game to run through. "

Goemon is a strange game.

STORY (8/10): As I said it is childish humor combined with a fairly mature plot (Besides a few points). Some nun-like lady had released a demon upon the world using a proffesors device. The thing goes around kidnapping a princess, and causing all type of havoc. Goemon and Ebisaruma go out to stop this thing and with the help from friends, and a huge machine named Impact they take on all that stands in their way. There is a little cat who shows up at times also, and well he too is part of this fairly good plot. I cannot really complain much with the story Goemon tells.

GRAPHICS (17/20): This is a 2D game, except for in the towns. However for being a 2D game the graphics are crisp and clean, and you do run around at angles and stuff, and there are even splits in the path (similiar to Yoshi's story). The towns are also pretty slick, although all the buildings look the same. I am fond of the graphics, and it puts alot of 3D games to shame.

SOUND (6/10): Where is the ingame character voices? This is a game where that would've made a very nice addition. Now continueing on the sound effects are little exploding noises no matter who you defeat and the tinking sound of coins coming out. The music is nice and changes throughout the courses, which is a plus. However the effects and lack of voices really shoots this down.

GAMEPLAY (40/45): You go around various levels beating them to gain entry passes. However this is not the only method to gain entry passes. There are various mini-games people around the towns will tell you to do. These are more likely different ruotes through already courses, and finding some random items. However Ebisaruma's two races are great. Especially if you smach your opponent right before the finish line, giving you the victory hehehehe. Each character has a special advantage. The most influential however is Goemon's double jump. Now the controls are smooth and responsive. There are only five worlds in the game, and yet each has a good share of levels, and in my mind this is the perfect level for a game. The games castles are mostly all fun, and some up that worlds speciality fairly well. Some might find this game repitive, but in truth it is more fun than repetitive, for I love doing the simple jump and smack with Goemon's pipe. Also the impact battles, although most of the moves are pointless but that multi-punch, are the best part of the game. For attacking your opponents is definitely great in those two big machines walking around.

REPLAYABILITY (7/10): Goemon is a fairly long game, although some may have wished it to be longer, I find it the perfect length. Now it is fun to go through and perfect the various levels, cause the game was fun when you first played it, and it is still fun the second. However where the replayability is strongest is that two people can simultaneously play through the game. This goes throughout the entire game including against the bosses and the impact battles. For a 2D adventure game, this has strong replay value.

DIFFICULTY (4/5): This is borderline 4, for the difficulty could also deserve a 5. The only problem is the final castle is really hard to get through, particularily the last part of it. However if you keep at it, you will find your way through to a BEATABLE final boss. Not many N64 games had that included!!! This game also has a few other tough battles, such as the Impact battles, but you have unlimited continues to fight those machines.

OVERALL (82/100): Goemon's Great Adventure is not a game that will disapoint, for in the beggining it seems immature and almost like it is going to be childish gameplay, it is not at all. The gameplay takes time and dedication, and well it is fun throughout. I enjoyed Goemon's Great Adventure, and for an adventure game it may be one of the better for modern day systems. This is a game you should look into, for it is one of the better Nintendo 64 games, and maybe one of the better games period.

Star Fox Assault (GameCube)

The Star Fox team first appeared on the Gamecube in a platform game, called Star Fox Adventures. While, many considered it a quality game (and others a subpar game) it never really felt like a true Star Fox game, despite the occasional flying (simple stages). Namco, however, introduced the true sequel to the classic St...

Jak 3 (PlayStation 2)

Jak II was one of those experience that every gamer either absolutely loved or completely loathed. The game strayed from everything the first Jak game stood for, in that it took a much serious outlook, and it based itself more on the GTA series, that it's own original concept. Jak III does not change any of that, as it...

Jak II (PlayStation 2)

Jak and Daxter was a platforming game based on exploration, simple fight patterns, cool minigames, and lush colorful scenery. All that has changed in Jak II, for no longer is the Jak series perfect for kids of all ages and instead this game is only a little less intense version of Grand Theft Auto.
