This game is relatively fun, if you bought this game and started with this game. If you started with .Hack//G.U. Vol 1: Rebirth or .Hack//G.U. Vol. 2: Reminisce, then you are just sticking it out for the story, aren't ya? Well, this game is certainly balanced, but it depends on how you look at it.

First of all, like any of the .Hack games, they give you a teaser trailer for an opening, hoping to entice you to keep playing and figure out what's going on in them. For the most part, this works, just pray that you survive the dungeons. And what I mean by survive the dungeons is, that hope you don't die from boredom, rather than a shortage of HP. The dungeons are like its first two predecessor; redundant, boring, and long. The combat system hasn't even changed any, so it's still the same ol' button mashing. If you have reached level 21 or higher for the weapon skill levels, don't expect too many new skills, the next ones are unlocked until quite far in the game. I was quite disappointed myself, I wanted to see something new and flashy, but nope, no such luck.

The graphics themselves aren't bad at all. Actually I quite like the cel shading they did for this game, quite well done for the most part. However, you see some rough edges during movie clips sometimes, which irritates my eyes. Everything so smooth then suddenly "...whoa!" you have this stupid pixelated edge sitting there. Other than that, you notice some of the items are not consistent. An example, if you are familiar with the characters, Ovan. Ovan has a giant left arm, and during certain clips, you can see that arm go through his jacket. Not cool, but livable I suppose.

You also unlock several older characters from this game's predecessors and more. Which, I definitely liked, always good to have a nice choice of characters for your party. Too bad the max is 3. I would like it better if we could have a larger party, it would certainly be more MMO-like and you can use more party members. Though it's completely understandable that enemies would get tougher, which I don't mind at all. Just switch up the fighting system every once in a while!

The story, however, is wonderful. It's the only thing that made me play this game is to finish the story. It was indeed good enough to redeem this game of its previously mentioned flaws. In fact, I'm actually tempted to play again just to rush through the series and experience the story a little more linear-like. This game even ends the story nicely, very few loose ends, if any. At least, I didn't notice any.

I actually enjoyed this game quite a bit, and if you like the .Hack series or just for a good sci-fi story, this is definitely worth a try. Just don't expect to get fun gameplay. The battle system is interesting at first, but becomes repetitive very fast, particularly inside the dungeons, where there are loads of monsters and it's annoying to find your way around; despite how simplistic the dungeon may be.
