Come See Me Tonight 2 starts the way most hentai games do: with the protagonist finally released from school for the day. In this case, the star attraction is a feminine fellow named Kensuke Tsukikage. The only reason he’s noteworthy--aside from the fact that he looks like a girl--is his ancestry. Years ago, his forefathers established a shrine. Now, he’s expected to take the reigns from his lecherous grandfather. That’s where the ‘hentai’ comes into play. As Kensuke, you must choose which of four hotties will have ceremonial sex with you and become your wife.

The leading ladies are presented through Kensuke’s inner monologues. He’s known most of them for years, yet still he considers them in relation to how their breasts sway as they wave, or how their cloth skirts rub against their legs as they walk. In traditional hentai fashion, the main personality types are represented: a bubbly older woman with huge breasts (Minami); a serious girl just the slightest bit older than you (Koruri); a girl you’ve known pretty much all your life who is like a sister/mother to you (Nanao); the requisite brat who is so spunky and adorable you just have to love her (Sheena).

Once the introductions are out of the way, you’ll spend the rest of the game deciding who to have intercourse with. As the game makes clear early on, pre-ceremony exploits are acceptable and are in fact encouraged. Considering the genre, there’s one pressing question that remains to be answered: how good is the sex?

The sex is great. Each of the available females will strut her stuff for you in a variety of poses, and they look amazing almost without exception. The artists really nailed a good look and ran with it. Also, Kensuke’s penis must have been on vacation during most of the game’s development, as it seldom makes an appearance and almost never gets in the way of what most people are playing this game to seen: priestess-in-training bootie! Genital-obscuring mosaics are out of the picture, too. No, the sex isn’t this game’s problem. Instead, it’s the tedious text between.

Think back to all the hentai games you’ve played. Remember the character twists and developments that were so interesting in games like The Sagara Family? Remember how easy it was to care for those characters? Well, that’s not the case here. Every one of the girls can get a bit catty with the others, and it’s just not all that entertaining to watch them fight about who prepares food better or whatever. More even than normal, it can be tempting to just hold down the ‘CTRL’ key on the keyboard to skip through all the chatter.

There’s a lot of filler here. Especially during the game’s opening, you’ll be sitting through one boring discussion after another. You’ll wonder if you really want to be a priest and you’ll wonder who will do chores the next day. In short, you’ll spend a lot of time reading about the sort of things you try to avoid in real life. I’m sure it’s meant to give the game a sense of atmosphere, and I can’t deny that it’s successful on that count. But here’s a summary of the atmosphere: one extremely boring temple.

Suddenly, all you care to do is skip through the text and sleep with the girl of your choice. Text, text, text, sex, text, text, text, text, sex. Eventually, the pattern gets so tedious that you’re tempted to cycle through everything. Yes, that includes the sex. When a hentai game has you weary enough that you don’t even find yourself interested in the bountiful bosoms, you know something’s wrong.

On a more positive note, at least the story isn’t repulsive. Kensuke doesn’t suddenly turn into a brutal rapist. About the most violence you can expect from the plot is when your angry grandfather sends you off to the equivalent of boot camp if you don’t take your responsibilities and sex seriously enough. Disturbing fetishes are checked at the door, too. The result is that you can sit back and enjoy the sex without feeling particularly dirty. And when you start doing that, Come See Me Tonight 2 starts to be worth your attention once more. If only so you can browse the gallery of unlocked images at your leisure, you’ll probably play through several times. Depending on how much you actually bother to read, the game could potentially give you somewhere close to twenty hours of… amusement.

In the end, it’s hard to decide just what to think about Come See Me Tonight 2. It’s certainly not a bad example of a hentai game. There are lots of extremely attractive girls and they’re not afraid to show you everything multiple times. The artwork throughout is amazing, there’s some nice piano music, and you don’t have to worry that you’ll suddenly find yourself committing violent crimes. The game really did come close to being something special. Alas, it fell just short. After all, who needs mosaics when you’ve got tedium?
