I got my wisdom teeth taken out junior year of high school. I had to do it early because they were growing in sideways :|

First year of college for me. Welcome to the gimp club.

I am so not looking forward to the day that I will have mine horribly plucked from my head. Ouch...
zippdementia zippdementia - October 30, 2010 (12:04 AM)
Hopefully they are in your jaw and not actually in your head... like embedded in your forehead or something... cause that would really be painful.
JoeTheDestroyer JoeTheDestroyer - October 30, 2010 (12:05 AM)
That might explain the funny sensation in my temples, though.

That or too much incense.

Looks like I'll be bidding adieu to my own wisdom teeth this upcoming Wednesday.

My bottom-left wisdom tooth literally chipped off yesterday while eating a salad during buffet hours at Shakey's. When it initially chipped off, I was chewing on my salad, thinking that I had bitten into a rock or an extremely hard piece of lettuce. I didn't know it was a chunk of tooth until I rolled my tongue around my mouth... AFTER I left the restaurant.

Funny thing is, I didn't feel any pain as it came loose.

What I feel more embarrassed of: I'm nearly 32 years old, and I have never visited a dental office as a patient. I'm actually rather fearful of how questionable a condition my teeth are in.
zippdementia zippdementia - October 30, 2010 (10:34 AM)
It depends on genetics and how often you brush and floss. I hadn't gone to the dentist in nearly 3 years and I just went to find nothing is wrong with my teeth.

One easy sign is do your teeth look bad? Are they yellow or, gods help us, black?

Local anesthetic finally wore off. Now I'm in pain. =/

Hopefully this vicodin kicks in soon enough.

You know I didn't take any pain medication during mine. Just suffered.
wolfqueen001 wolfqueen001 - October 30, 2010 (03:11 PM)
I only took the painkillers twice when I had mine out (summer before starting college). Mine especially hurt because they took the top teeth out, too, which hadn't started coming in yet, so they had to dig them out of my gums.

Suffice to say, my gums aren't there anymore where my teeth used to be, and the thing bled like crazy. I used all the gause they gave me and it was still bleeding a little when I went to bed that night, despite having the surgery in the afternoon.

Fun times.

You'll love the saltwater treatment that you have to do in a few days. Contrary to what it sounds like, it actually works very well as a pain reliever.

The hardest part for me was going to a party where all they had to eat was Ruffles.

I had my wisdom teeth removed in the 10th grade. My oral surgeon told me my teeth were growing in the worst position possible. I didn't think the pain was that bad. I never took any of the analgesics I was prescribed. I found the unattractive appearance of my swollen cheeks more of a pressing matter. Deep down I must be extremely vain.

I just got back home from the dentist's office about 7:35p PDT. Turns out that my teeth aren't in too bad a shape, but I had five cavities. I'm going to have to return on Friday to get a super-cleaning, which I fear may cost me a tooth or two during the process; my teeth were cleaned earlier today, and it freaking HURT!

Unfortunately, my wisdom teeth are going to be sticking around until the 12th of this month. By then, I think I'm going to start sounding like Bob Dylan (ivv va vivv vivv viv va vivv!).

How can your teeth not be in bad shape and yet you have five cavities? I'm honestly curious. I'm not being an asshole (perhaps inadvertently)
wolfqueen001 wolfqueen001 - November 03, 2010 (09:47 PM)
Haha. Yeah. The cleaning will hurt until your mouth and gums get used to it. I go to the dentist for cleanings twice a year, so it's not a huge problem for me, except when they start picking at my gums. But I never floss. They say if you floss, it stops your gums from hurting and bleeding so much when they clean all the gunk out from in there.

That sucks about the cavities, though. My brother had a small one. I've been fortunate not to have any yet. But I've no idea how long that luck will hold out.

From what I can gather, these five cavities were spread about three different teeth -- all of which were located on the left side of the mouth.

Just be prepared to not be very productive in the week or so after getting your wisdom teeth removed.
zippdementia zippdementia - November 04, 2010 (09:58 AM)
Ouch. Sorry to hear about that, q. You'll be happier when they are gone, though, trust me on that! I've had some cavities in my life, so I can relate.

Just decided to write in on my status.

I got my the two wisdom teeth on the left side of my mouth pulled at about 12:30p PST, and it's only now that I am feeling the pain.

Fortunately -- or not -- my folks are getting me a vanilla milkshake from a nearby fast-food taco joint. I don't know if the cold will help ease the pain, but as long as the milkshake tastes good, I'll be content.
zippdementia zippdementia - November 12, 2010 (06:39 PM)
Just be sure to rinse afterwards: the sugar can give you pains later.
wolfqueen001 wolfqueen001 - November 12, 2010 (06:41 PM)
Don't drink that with a straw. You might remove the clots and then have to deal with dry socket, which I've heard is quite excruciating.
zippdementia zippdementia - November 12, 2010 (08:34 PM)
Also, try being miserable and then try being happy. You'll find the miserable is easier, but the happier feels better and cuts the pain.
qxz qxz - November 12, 2010 (09:26 PM)
Thanks for the input, WolfQueen and Zipp.

I was actually fully aware not to suck anything through a straw, so I was prepared; I actually wound up taking in that milkshake with an elongated plastic spoon.

As far as rinsing afterward, I'm being very leery about doing so. I was instructed not to do any rinsing for 24 hours after the extraction. However, I don't know if that advice applies to sloshing water about -- as seen in these recent Listerine commercials. The only way I thing I can rinse is by just putting water in my mouth and gently tilting my head left and right.
zippdementia zippdementia - November 12, 2010 (11:12 PM)
Definitely listen to your dentist. My wisdoms were okay for swishing... depends on what the procedure entailed... how far they had to, ahem, dig...
wolfqueen001 wolfqueen001 - November 12, 2010 (11:17 PM)
Don't talk about digging to me... That was awful.
qxz qxz - November 12, 2010 (11:53 PM)
No digging. All that happened was, in essence, "grip it and rip it".

Does anyone around here know if a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide is a legitimate rinsing agent in this circumstance?
wolfqueen001 wolfqueen001 - November 13, 2010 (07:21 AM)
I don't remember ever using that when I had mine out. Honestly, if the instructions you were given don't say to use it, I wouldn't. The rinsng agent I used was the salt water mix after the third or fourth day or whenever it was they said to start rinsing with that.
zippdementia zippdementia - November 13, 2010 (10:32 AM)
Yes, it is legitimate.
