My best friend and I played through this game on Sunday. It's on my short list of reviewing projects after I finish Batman: Arkham Asylum and the XBLA Vandal Hearts game.

I think I'm more in line with Zig and his 8/10 score than the general consensus that it's the game of the year and something incredibly awesome that will change the world and possibly cure cancer.

A very good game with a number of orgasm-inducing scenes of awesomeness. But at times, I felt the designers went the route of great presentation and keeping things going over great gameplay.

One particular chapter of the game revolves around you dodging a tank (which will kill you near-instantly if you get in its path). The checkpoints are bunched so close together it's impossible to NOT quickly progress through what should have been a taut, riveting confrontation. I reached two consecutive checkpoints by the skin of my teeth and got killed immediately afterwards. Still, I reached them, so I'd advanced despite obviously doing it wrong. Then, after the chase part is over, you have to kill a number of dudes with rocket launchers and use each one-shot launcher to damage the tank. With one of them, I shot the tank and immediately got gunned down (as I was right in its path). Because damaging the tank counts as a checkpoint, though, I advanced a bit further thanks to my kamikaze attack.

In other words, repeatedly in this battle, I advanced from one checkpoint to the next simply by failing, but making it just far enough before dying to trigger a checkpoint. Which isn't hard to do when you seem to get one during this chapter for (a) running about 50 feet without dying during the chase part and (b) hitting it with the launcher to inflict damage EVEN IF YOU DIE AT ROUGHLY THE SAME TIME during the battle part.

This was an amazingly cool battle, but the ease with which I was allowed to advance through it really took away from some of the coolness.

I wish to hear more on the XBLA Vandal Hearts game.

Very interesting points OD. Does the game back you into a corner by restarting you at a checkpoint where you'll immediately die? Or does it account for that possibility and compensate accordingly?
