Blue Lacuna (Mac) cover art sample
Staff review by Jonathan Stark (October 24, 2010)

Don’t think that Blue Lacuna works simply because it doesn’t have graphics or a bunch of explosions, though. Not all Interactive Fiction can claim to have achieved what Blue Lacuna does. This isn’t some throwback to sensibilities that have long gone out of style. This isn’t typing “east, west, and open chest” in a meaningless dungeon romp with some comedy thrown in. This is serious writing. This is next generation programming. This is gaming that is inspirational and lasting.

Puzzle Dimension (Mac) cover art sample
Staff review by Jonathan Stark (October 16, 2010)

Roll forward, carefully now... get that goodie... this is all according to the plan. Oh dear god, I think I just took a wrong turn there! Quickly, remember what happened the last time you tried this. Do I jump once and then twice to clear the gap or is it once, roll a step, jump again, and then I’m free? Wait, why am I still rolling? Is that ice I’m on? Oh, Christ, it’s a pit coming up. Jump jump aw please jump. Is that a spring or a switch? Spring or a switch? Spring or a... oh, phew, it’s a switch. Okay the goal is there, right in front of me, roll towards it... agh, I forgot about the fire tile!

Star Wars: Dark Forces (Mac) cover art sample
Staff review by Rob Hamilton (July 31, 2010)

If Mohc's plans come to fruition, the rebels are screwed. Instead of facing unending hordes of bumbling white-armored goofs seemingly incapable of hitting ANYTHING with their lasers, they'll be butchered ruthlessly by unending hordes of lethal killing machines. As the game's title suggests, dark forces are indeed threatening those opposing the tyrannical empire.

Starcraft (Mac) cover art sample
Staff review by Jonathan Stark (June 27, 2010)

This is Starcraft. This is a game that can still inspire excitement and interest more than a decade after its initial release. It does this despite having outdated graphics, without including branching paths or moral choices, and with nary a trophy achievement in sight. Starcraft can raise a lot of questions about what’s really important in a game.

Final Doom (Mac) cover art sample
Staff review by Rob Hamilton (October 09, 2009)

Hell, in just one courtyard, you'll first have to deal with a legion of Mancubi while a few Revenants are aiming their missiles at you from higher ground. Finish them off and hit a couple of switches and a bunch of Arachnotrons make their presence felt. Dispose of them and flip a couple more switches to trigger a massive Cacodemon invasion. All in all, this is a very exhilarating series of battles and it's only one tiny part of this massive, combat-heavy level.

Clive Barker's Undying (Mac) cover art sample
Reader review by zippdementia (March 05, 2009)

Patrick Galloway traverses the silent corridors of an ancient manor. His long hair sticks to his face with sweat, and he absently brushes it away with the barrel of his magnum revolver. His other hand clutches a stone that glows softly with un-revealed power, dimly lighting the otherwise dark hallway. Somewhere in the distance, eerie laughter can just be heard over the heavy sound of rainfall. Patrick shakes his head as if to clear it. He’s here to help his friend, Jeremiah Covenant, explai...

American McGee's Alice (Mac) cover art sample
Reader review by threetimes (January 27, 2009)

Forget Walt Disney's sanitised version of Alice in Wonderland, and return to the roots of the Alice mythos by entering the bizarre, insane and violent fantasy world, created by Lewis Carroll's febrile imagination, and recreated here, in American McGee's Alice. This is a third person platforming adventure at its very best, and for adults only.

The 7th Guest (Mac) cover art sample
Reader review by zippdementia (January 15, 2009)

It was one of the first CD-ROM games ever released, one of the first games to use live action video placed over pre-rendered graphics, and one of the first games to have an adult theme (not counting Atari’s vast library of lewd titles). That’s a lot of impressive firsts, but it also places The 7th Guest as a pioneer trying a lot of new technology in the early 90’s.

Pathways Into Darkness (Mac) cover art sample
Reader review by johnny_cairo (August 24, 2007)

Bungie came from humble beginnings, debuting with a Pong clone in 1985, maturing in 1993 with Pathways Into Darkness, a rather grim RPG/Adventure hybrid featuring graphics rendered from a first-person POV. Technically it was their first "shooter", although shooting takes a backseat to frustrating puzzles and frequent deaths. You're an American Spec Ops paratrooper in a unit inserted deep into the Yucatan jungle. Your chute does not deploy and you fall to earth separated from your s...

Ultimate Doom (Mac) cover art sample
Reader review by overdrive (August 03, 2005)

For someone like me, who likely is never going to leave the planet Earth, the thought of becoming a Space Marine is an attractive prospect. Being able to travel to distant planets and call the moons of Mars my home sounds like the adventure of a lifetime! Sadly, as classic first-person shooter Doom illustrates, there is a wee bit of a darkside to holding such an occupation. For mysterious reasons, the forces of Hell pay a little visit to Phobos and Deimos (those Martian moons, for those n...

Warlords (Mac) cover art sample
Reader review by overdrive (July 28, 2005)

A lone hero stands in the city his people call home. He feels an immense amount of pressure weigh upon his broad shoulders, as his death would be a crippling blow to his people in their attempts to unite the 80 cities scattered throughout the land. Seven other heroes representing seven other factions all have their own dreams of conquest and glory. Letting any of them obtain a tactical advantage could easily become a fatal mistake. For no matter how adept with the blade his people become, there ...
