Astyanax (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by JoeTheDestroyer (January 22, 2012)

[Astyanax] may not stand above such brethren as Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania, but it sure beats out other rough awesome-wanna-bes like Castle of Dragon and Frankenstein: The Monster Returns. Astyanax doesn't suck up or beg for your love and respect; it commands it with a stiff punch that will break your jaw in six different places.... and you'll like it.

Power Blazer (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by pickhut (January 15, 2012)

If the comparisons between Power Blade and Mega Man are hard to see, then Power Blazer makes them painfully obvious: you control a small, chubby fellow that dons a blue helmet, and unlike his remixed, muscled brother, this guy can only attack in two directions, left and right.

Power Blade (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by pickhut (January 11, 2012)

Beyond here, you'll take the Schwarzenegger-type avatar and pull him through a series of platform areas filled with cybernetic enemies with varying attack patterns, ranging from airborne robots to giant, bearded faces attached to walls that spit bubbles. Yes, such an enemy exists. And this is all done with the aid of a... boomerang?

Othello (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by aschultz (January 09, 2012)

I was able to game early chess computers pretty easily by locking up the pawns and then watching them flail. That made me feel smart. Othello was the computer's revenge.

TaleSpin (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by wolfqueen001 (December 27, 2011)

In the first level, enemy planes try to ram you as you fly over large expanses of water dotted with oil platforms. Halfway through, you confront the infamous air pirate Don Karnage, who is hell-bent on ruining your day. You can't beat him yet, so you must evade his shots while pressing forward until he gives up.

Metroid (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by dagoss (December 09, 2011)

To think that 70% of this game, so familiar to so many players, occupies exactly 0 bytes of data. The glimpses I see of Real Zebes break a spell indeed... It is one thing to understand how a game works, but it is another entirely to see how it work.

Wally Bear and the No Gang (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by JoeTheDestroyer (November 29, 2011)

Lesson learned from Wally Bear and the No Gang: taking drugs is reprehensible, but killing neighborhood dogs with hubcaps is a-okay!

Romance of the Three Kingdoms (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by dagoss (November 27, 2011)

After a short hour into a playthrough, the player may feel as though they've accomplished nothing---this is likely true. Do not mistake: there is strategy in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it is simply difficult to extrapolate when you are falling asleep in your chair.

Jackal (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by JoeTheDestroyer (November 22, 2011)

Jackal is a fine slice of 8-bit war game heaven. It keeps the action rolling forward, but isn't completely mindless. Mashing buttons and watching things explode isn't what Jackal is all about. Dodging bullet after bullet and learning to deal with each situation as it arises is the meat of the game, and Jackal handles it without killing the pace.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by JoeTheDestroyer (November 14, 2011)

Viewed as a sequel, SMB2 is a victory because the experience is as fresh and imaginative as it is challenging and exciting. Viewed as a repackaging, it's still a win because it's a stellar platformer with or without Mario and company.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (NES) cover art sample
Reader review by JoeTheDestroyer (October 26, 2011)

The Elm Street license, however, won't distract most gamers from noticing that this an unremarkable platformer. This is not to say it's unplayable. The mechanics, apart from entering buildings, are stable and functional; the platforming scenarios are passable; and the overall product is still far greater than many others that carry the LJN name.
