Reader review by pickhut (December 19, 2011)

You're also bound to encounter up to a staggering... let me compose myself for a second... four enemies at once! That's, like, leagues more than the usual three from the predecessor!!

Fire Mustang (Genesis) cover art sample
Staff review by Gary Hartley (August 20, 2011)

So, just this once, I’ll ignore the easy digs, like how the game starts in 1940, while America didn’t enter the war until 1941. Or how the P-51 Mustangs I assume the game is based around were not readily available until around 1943. Instead I’ll mention how I stumbled upon a game I enjoyed playing despite looking for one to bag on.

Shining Force II (Genesis) cover art sample
Staff review by Gary Hartley (May 10, 2011)

There’s a reason why I’ve revisited Moun on an almost yearly basis, and beaten the hell out of goat-eared mages. And it’s the same reason why I’ll meet up with FREYJA around the same time next year and do it all over again.

Wings of Wor (Genesis) cover art sample
Staff review by Rob Hamilton (May 07, 2011)

This is a fantasy game and I don't mean a "control a cute witch as she blasts hordes of adorable critters who turn into lollypops and flowers" fantasy. I'm talking about a dark fantasy where you're in control of an angel descending into a macabre, hellish world to confront grotesque monstrosities seemingly conjured from the worst nightmares of the game's designers.

Whenever you think you understand how Target Earth plays, it always seem to do something to slap your ass back to the title screen.

Lightening Force (Genesis) cover art sample
Staff review by Marc Golding (March 19, 2011)

There's a story here somewhere, but it doesn't matter much--this is a side-scrolling shooter after all. And the story is especially irrelevant when the developers, Technosoft, changed things up when they released Thunder Force V packaged with a revised history of the series. Suffice it to say that you will be expected to kill everything in your path in the name of victory. Martyrdom has no place in space.

Thunder Force 3 (Genesis) cover art sample
Staff review by Marc Golding (March 17, 2011)

Amazingly, on a system inundated with side-scrolling shoot 'em ups, TFIII managed to shine. Critics, shooter fanatics, and casual players alike, found common ground with this cartridge.

The ideal world is a pipedream. The majority of Thunder Force II is rotten.

Xenon 2 (Genesis) cover art sample
Staff review by Gary Hartley (January 23, 2011)

I respect Xenon 2 for the envelopes it pushed, but this doesn’t qualify it for a free pass; it doesn’t excuse its mistakes. Remember its innovations fondly, if you like, just don’t revisit them. There’s no reason to; no reward for your efforts. Just one final note from Bitmap Brothers saying “By the way? We know you cheated to get this far, and we hate you.”

Vectorman (Genesis) cover art sample
Staff review by Marc Golding (December 02, 2010)

At the time of this game's release, a big fuss was made over it. Much drooling came about, and many Genesis gamers had to dab gingerly at their foreheads with cold towels. The reason was that BlueSky Software made a truly unique-looking game. Vectorman himself (he's the good guy) is made out of yellow-green spheres, and he animates brilliantly. His composition and movement might bring to mind the PC survival horror not-quite-classic, Ecstatica, had anyone actually played that game. But Vectorman's own good looks grandstand alongside shamefully bland foes, and within missions undeserving of his own undeniable charm.
