Not to mention the previous six movies. I almost wrote that last sentence in the header, but even that would have been a spoiler in itself.

Super brief review: it was fun, even if it was a bumpy ride sometimes. The first 10, 15 minutes alone destroy the prequel trilogy. Maybe I'll go into detail in a later blog entry.

Edit: the more I think about it, I'm not really digging Kylo Ren. I kinda see that they intentionally made him inexperienced, but by the end of the movie, all I could think of was, "Wow, Kylo Ren is such a manchild." But, I guess they're hoping to "expand" his development in the sequels. I hope.

I'm actually seeing a lot of people mention that some of the cast needed more screen time, but if you watch the original trilogy, some of the most important or beloved characters (Yoda, Obi Wan, the Emperor, Boba Fett, even Lando) they really got little to no screen time in comparison to the major characters. I honestly think that is wonderful...it helps you to feel like its a huge universe you just can't know everything about in a handful of hours.

Daisy Ridley killed it by the way...just unbelievable, I love her character and performance.

I was a bit worried about her performance when I saw a brief clip of the film during an interview, because it came off stiff, but it was a different story when I finally saw the movie whole. While I did have some qualms about her character's arc, I really dug that she came off as a genuine human being that you can relate to.

The movie was entertaining in the moment, but it's easily the least vivid and imaginative Star Wars ever made. The plot was also ridiculously thin. The search for Luke not only amounts to nothing, but it has no bearing whatsoever on the battle to stop the Starkiller. It would have made more sense if BB-8 were carrying the plans for the new weapon rather than a map to finding Luke Skywalker. I also don't understand the whole bait-and-switch involving Anakin's lightsaber. It felt like Abrams was being clever for the sake of being clever. Lots of critical stuff felt glossed over and underdeveloped, like Han and Ren's relationship and Rey's background. Han's death felt weird and pointless, and it made it look like Leia stupidly sent her husband to his death. Dropping the shields for the Starkiller was also WAY too easy. For all the shilling Captain Phasma got, she turned out to be a complete chump and a non-entity. Even Boba Fett got to do SOMETHING cool before getting eaten by the Sarlacc.

(continuing spoilers)

Yeah, the film was reiterating and treading a lot of what the original trilogy was, which is why I wanted to hold off on forming any detailed opinions after watching the movie. I like the film, I like the characters, but I "squirmed" sometimes when the movie repeated stuff for the sake of nostalgia. Remember Tatooine? Here's Jakku! Remember the Death Star? Here's a bigger and stronger version! Remember how they blew it up? Well.

Hilariously, this seems to echo my thoughts I had with my Star Wars Battlefront review: "Hey, this is fun, but......." At the same time, it's hard to make, for me at least, a complete thought on a story that's intentionally left hanging. I just hope they go into new territory with the sequel.

The guy who wrote and directed Looper (great movie btw) is doing the next one...I have pretty high hopes for Episode VIII

OBVIOUS SPOILERS

Thank god no one said the word 'midichlorians' in the movie. Easily better than all 3 prequel films - better script, better action, better acting, better directing. I would need to rewatch it later when it comes to blu-ray to compare it to the original trilogy, but I doubt it could hold up against them. Some things did feel underdeveloped probably for sake of keeping the film's pace up and the length down. I'm sure Rey's background will become clear in the next film. And hopefully Kylo Ren will be more interesting. My biggest complaints were:

1) Very heavily reliant on the original trilogy. I just feel like a lot of the the movie was pretty much an analog for A New Hope.
2) Kylo Ren just felt like a poor man's Darth Vader who became less interesting once he took off the mask. Hopefully he will be hardened in the next film.
3) Luke Skywalker is barely in the movie. I'm sure he'll be a huge part of the next one.

Regarding Han Solo's death: Yeah, I figured this would happen back when it was announced he'd be in the movie. Isn't Harrison Ford generally uninterested in Star Wars?

The action scenes in the prequels were way better than this movie's. They were a lot more inventive and memorable, while the set pieces in TFA felt like microwaved leftovers. It's slight variations on stuff we've seen before. As far as the directing goes, the only sequence that stuck out for me was that scene where the Stromtrooper's helmet was marked with blood. If the rest of the movie had shown that kind of inspiration, it could have been truly something.

I thought Kylo Ren was refreshing because he *is* a big manchild. His temper and inexperience are a nice change from Vader, and those traits -- as well as his bastardly act at the end -- prevent me from rooting for him. Which is good. I don't want to root for him, not even a little bit. I want to see him get trashed. And now that he has something to prove, it'll only be more interesting from here on out. (I also liked how he took off his helmet, which shows that he basically wears it just to be cool like granddaddy Vader.)

The look on Rey's face as she held the saber out for Luke was perfect. The acting in this movie was so much better than the original Star Wars, although for sheer imagination the original trilogy still can't be touched.
