-GAMES-

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain: I almost wrote this blog entry a week ago, and the week before that, too. I stopped myself every time, though, simply because I was still mostly playing one game: The Phantom Pain. It got to the point where I played so much of it, that I didn't even want to engage in any kind of discussion of the game. Hell, I didn't even read any of the other TPP reviews on the site until now because I needed breathing room. When it was finally time to write my review of the game, I was actually surprised at how easy it was. Though, since my last "big" review happened to be for Zombie Army Trilogy, and I wasn't thrilled at how huge that one turned out, I tried really hard to go for an "in and out" style with this review, which is why a lot of the descriptions had an in-passing vibe to it.

So how was I burned out on playing MGSV but still played for almost an extra month? Metal Gear Online 3. Long story short: I'm not satisfied with the design of the multiplayer. A lot of stuff feels broken that needs to be fixed, and I hope the upcoming patch will rectify some of the issues. However, I keep playing, because I get the most joy out of playing as a Scout, and either mark people at a distance, or rescue people with a sniper rifle as they're being Fultoned. When it comes to multiplayer-type games, I'm more of a "support" guy than the person being up front and blowing everyone away. I dunno, I just find that stuff more entertaining. I eventually got my Scout to level 37 and I feel that's my stopping point; I really don't feel like choosing Ascension for my character and restarting at level 1, since all the bonus stuff you get is basically cosmetic bragging rights...

Super Mario Bros: I've been watching several Mario Maker vids on YouTube, and it gave me a nostalgic thirst to play the original, so I purchased the 3DS version. Since it's been so long, I imposed a challenge to myself: how long can I go before dying? Just how good is my muscle memory? I managed to reach 6-3... the pits got me. Still very much a solid game after all these decades, and at one point playing it, I was almost compelled to write a review. Almost.

????: I think I want to review this game. It's been a few days since I last touched it, so the interest might not be there if I pick it up again. For now, I'll just say that it's a 3DS eShop exclusive that shocked me.

-MOVIES-

For some reason, I'm currently in a "science fiction/what if?" phase, and I think it started with my viewing of 1979's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which then lead me to watch the following films.

The Andromeda Strain: I've heard of this movie but never got around to it til now. It had a very suspenseful and foreboding first half, but the second the scientists entered the underground facility, the pacing just lost me. I don't mind technical or science stuff, but I felt the movie spent wayyyyyy too much time on these aspects. Later, I found out the director, Robert Wise, also directed the first Star Trek movie. That explains too much...

The Omega Man: I found this movie entertaining, but in a campy way. I'm sure that wasn't intentional. Charlton Heston's acting felt over the top at times (though, somewhat understandable), I couldn't get over how some of the mutants decided to wear sparkling robes, I got a kick out of the obvious stunt double during the bike sequence, and the soundtrack, man, the soundtrack!

The Martian: At the 15-ish minute mark, I was sitting in the theater and thinking to myself, "How are they going to sustain this for two hours?" As the minutes went on, though, I was pleasantly surprised. Matt Damon's performance and the supporting cast definitely carried what could have been a slogging, boring picture. It's not a fair comparison, but you should go into this as if you were viewing something like Castaway.

And that's it again. See you next blog entry. While I my not have posted much of anything this month, I still very much visit the site everyday!
