Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation

If this was only a single-player game that had a bit more missions and fine-tuning, I would have given it an 8. But it wasn't.

Console Series Overview Time!

From Best to "Worst":

-Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
They went to town on this game, delivering varied play mechanics and missions, a well-executed plot, and great soundtrack. It set the standard for following AC titles to live up to or overcome. It has yet to happen.

-Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies
The original "full-scale" action AC game. AC6 may have more planes in the sky and more chaos, but AC4 just feels better executed overall.

Edit: I played a bit more of AC6 after posting this, and I change my mind. AC6's campaign is good, but the current state of the multiplayer and some issues keep the overall product just a tiny bit under AC4.

-Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
The current "full-scale" action title, kinda falters in places, like having an annoying lock on, lame plot, and minimal amount of missions. Doesn't help that the multiplayer now is next to empty. Like I said, if this was just a single-player game with more missions and some fine-tuning, it could have been better.

-Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
Coming after AC5, the overall product feels disappointing. The one area it was great in was the dogfights, some of which is easily the hardest fights in the series. However, basically everything else about the game keeps it from becoming a wonderful title.

-Ace Combat 2
I'm thinking of changing the rating to a 7/10. It's still a good game, and the first great AC console title, but later games in the series easily outdo it. The soundtrack is catchy, though.

-Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere
After AC2, this ended up being really lame. There's a lot of variety to be had, but the stupid AI almost destroys the game. Plus, the soundtrack sucks.

-Air Combat
I don't hate this game, but I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone to play it. The game does pose a bit of a challenge if you play on the Hard difficulty setting from the start.

Trivial Trivia

-I intentionally submitted all Ace Combat reviews on a Tuesday.
-After writing "Action! Action! Action!" in my Ace Combat 5 review, I decided to poke fun at it in the following two AC reviews, using "Combat! Combat! Combat!" in Ace Combat Zero and "Bigger! Bigger! Bigger!" in Ace Combat 6.

Extra: Favorite Ace Combat Themes

I'm not gonna list them all, because... I can't remember some of them.

One of the best, hell, possibly the best tune in the series, plays during the last mission of Ace Combat Zero:

If you're going "wtf" to this next one, stick with it, because it keeps building:

The start of this next video isn't the start of the theme, but it was the best, sound-wise, I could find on YouTube:

Out of all the Ace Combats, AC2 had the most catchy soundtrack:

Funny story: The first AC game I ever played was AC5, and after renting it for a weekend I was like "Holy shit this game is awesome". So I ran out and bought AC0, assuming it would be about as good.

It wasn't nearly, of course. I ended up not touching it after about a week. Then, some time later, I spotted AC4 in a bargain bin. "Maybe AC5 is one of those games that just had a subpar sequel, like MoO2," thought. "I bet its immediate predecessor is better than its sequel, and has split-screen multiplayer to boot".

It was better, but still not quite as good even with multiplayer. Like you said, they went to town with 5, and I think having that as my first experience with the series spoiled me. I keep hoping I'll spot AC5 on a Used Games shelf somewhere...

Heh, yeah, if someone were to tell me they only wanted to play one Ace Combat title, I would tell them to go with Ace Combat 5.

Unless they hate constant chatter on the radio. >_>
