How the hell do you save nothing?
April 06, 2010

A second ago, I loaded up Ace Combat 5, and was about to load my recent save. What I didn't know was that I actually entered the save section. I went ahead as if I was about to load the game, then I oddly noticed the save data go from Mission 11 to Mission 01. A second after, I realized what I just did. But seriously, it's pretty stupid that it allows me to save the absolute start of the game (campaign flight time: 00:00'00'), when I haven't even entered the game yet...

I'm giving Ace Combat 5 a 1/10 just for that.

Edit: Got up to Mission 7 within an hour. Funny how quick the missions go by when you skip all the cutscenes.

For someone who's never played an Ace Combat, which is the best to start with?

Well, maybe that's for people who are unhappy with their current campaign and like to start over. Who knows?

Well, they sometimes give players the ability to replay a mission right after completing, or free play missions after completing the whole game (though, AC3 does this in the most idiotic way possible), and they also give players the option to restart from the beginning with stats from the previous game. I dunno, it just seems like a really lame thing to let slip by. Not terrible enough to bring up and bitch about in a review, however.

Also, as for your question, Zig, I'm currently going through the series (the home console versions, at least) for the first time, too. Well... a better choice of words would be attempting to go through the series before losing interest and moving on to something else. So I'm still in the process of figuring that out myself. But, if you want my current opinion, I'd say, if you don't care to play all the games, Ace Combat 4 would be a good start. I might have said 5, but I'm still playing through it at the moment.
