Anyone else not care about Mega Man 10?
April 03, 2010

I downloaded it when it became available on Xbox 360, and completed the main game in under 2 hours. I haven't been compelled to return to it since. It just felt like they were beating a dead horse at this point, because the Robot Master stage designs were easy to navigate, most Robot Masters were pretty lame, challenge-wise (I never even used a powerup!), and half the music was garbage and forgettable. The sad thing about that last part is that it was a combined effort by composers that worked on the previous Mega Man games. The Wily stages were the only challenging and enjoyable aspect about the main game, and even then, it came off pretty lazy. Fighting past Robot Masters could have been cool, but they managed lame it up by making you fight floating, spiked boxes that just happened to have their abilities. Hell, Mega Man 3 at least gave you a robot to fight against when this happened!

Yeah, there's a Hard mode, challenges, and tough achievements, but they feel tacked on to make the main game appear like it has depth.

Mega Man is getting to be a joke. Why did he suddenly lose the ability to charge the mega buster and his slide ability starting in Mega Man 9?

And the whole Wily is now a good guy thing - They tried that in Mega Man 3. Are Light and the good guys really that stupid? How many chances are they going to give Wily? How many times is he going to be the main villain? When will they finally connect this series to the X series?

Capcom just keeps stringing us along. Frankly, I've had enough.

I actually liked that they excluded those two moves in MM9. Though, yeah, it is kinda silly that he just stops using them for no reason. Then again, I really don't play MM games for plot. Maybe Dr. Light got tired of fully repairing him after the 1000th spike death. >_>

Also, you do get the ability to slide while playing Proto Man (don't remember about charging weapon, and too lazy to look). I thought it was stupid that you had to pay for him in MM9, however. You get him from the start in MM10.

I don't care if they never connect the Mega Man and the X series. I honestly have no clue why anyone gives a crap about that. I just want them to keep cranking out games in each separate series, with one obvious provision: they need to be good. I haven't played Mega Man 10 yet, but I'm fairly certain that I will eventually. It's on my short list of games that I'd willingly pay to download.

It's not a big deal to me, but if we as critics are going to kick some game in their electronic nuts for having a bad or cliched story, then shouldn't that apply across the board?

I don't see why some games get a free pass for having a plot and timeline completely out of sorts, yet other games are burnt at the stake. To me, genre shouldn't matter. If this is something that a game needs, then it should apply across the board.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there, rand. There are cases in which a storyline simply gets in the way. If I'm playing Tetris, I don't want some epic story about how that bastard of an I-Block never shows up when I need it; I just want to make some lines and watch them disappear. Likewise, when I'm playing a Rockman game, I don't care why he's there or why he mysteriously loses all his powers from the last game. I just want to beat up on 8 Robot Masters that all have a weakness to one of the others.

However, there are games in which the plot takes a very central role... And it's laughable, at best. These are the games that deserve to be smacked down for their plots. Rockman never tries to let the story take center stage and especially in the case of RM9 and RM10, the story seems to be there simply to remind us of those campy NES days.

I'm going to go ahead and say that I agree with Randxian as far as connecting the series. I totally agree with espiga's point about plot, but I have to say that Mega Man X took a game that really had nothing to do with plot and suddenly gave it character and depth enough to actually make me care.

I mean, I love the original Mega Man games. But I have to say that Mega Man X has a bad-ass story and does something with the character that is undeniably cool.

With all the hints they dropped in Mega Man 7 and 8 about how the games might end up connecting, it just seems unfair to not go ahead and do it.

I doubt there's gonna be some big connection any time soon, since that would more or less be the end of the original series. Unless they can manage to drag it out through multiple games for a very long time.

Or pull a Star Trek.

See, it's Capcom, so they could very well do a game that connects the series and then ignore that and continue to pop out "Evil Genius Willy" games for infinity.

And honestly, that would be fine with me. Capcom fans have never deserved, nor gotten, anything more than that.
