Halo: Reach

Yeah, everything I said in the multiplayer paragraphs are basically repeats and expansions of what I said in the other blog/topic, but that really couldn't be helped.

Also, anyone who has played Reach will notice that I never really mentioned the special abilites in the review. I did this for two reasons: because the review was long enough as it is, and I didn't feel they were THAT significant enough to mention. There were rare times in Campaign where you truly needed them to get past certain parts, and in multiplayer, you get used to them after just a few matches.

Title: Reach has one of the worst multiplayer modes I've ever played
Posted: September 18, 2010 (01:25 PM)
I don't understand how they messed it up, considering Halo 3 had a fun multiplayer with only a few issues, but they managed to mess it up so bad in Reach. A lot of the maps, the bigger ones to be more specific, are horribly designed to the point where you'll have a gigantic chance of losing depending on which side you start on.

Take for example the Boneyard map: one team starts out in a closed structure that makes it almost impossible to be killed upon respawn, but the other team starts out in the open and are vulnerable to multiple angles on respawn. I played a game of SWAT once where I was on the open spot, and the other team easily took position on two higher leveled structures staring down on our spawn points... Nearly most of our team got wiped out a second after every spawn.

Same goes for the Paradiso map. In the center, there's this giant mountain you can get up to and basically snipe anywhere. What's worse is that it's easy for the sniper to take cover from shots coming from the ground, so the sniper has a huge advantage.

It seems common sense has been thrown out the window with Bungie, because there's really a lot of questionable changes and design choices made with Reach's multiplayer: playing as Elites has been limited, spawn points are silly and downright stupid because you can pop up right in front of an enemy tank or in a sniper's aim multiple times with no problem, maps are structured where certain gametypes are almost unplayable on them, and specific maps have weapons or vehicles not suited for them.

I've played a number of multiplayer modes on the Xbox 360 over the years, and none of them has given me this much frustration ever. The more I play Reach's multiplayer, the more it feels like I payed $60 just to be stressed out. Thank God Halo 3's multiplayer is still up, I can always just go back to that for some fun.

I can't be the only one that feels this way about the game? Because I'm having a hard time believing everyone is enjoying the bizarre choices. :/

I was going to make this little segment thingy in the review about how Yuji Naka seems obsessed with birds in video games, but that whole thing fell apart when I realized someone else made Flicky...

GunGriffon

I remember renting this game back in 1997 and, even though I got my ass handed to me, having fun with it. Still holds up nicely today. Though, modern gamers might be turned off by the "simplistic" missions featured in GunGriffon.

Title: Interesting how looking up the term 'mecha' lead me to a WTF plot twist... (spoilers)
Posted: August 09, 2010 (01:35 PM)
So, in an upcoming review, I used the word 'mech' several times, but I wasn't sure that was the correct or original term, so I did a quick google search. Of course, the first link lead to Wikipedia... I went and read a little of the history at the beginning of the page, which eventually lead me to a mention of Mazinger Z.

I clicked on that link just for the hell of it. I then read a bit of the info on that page, and decided to click on a link to Go Nagai's wiki page. I was greeted by a picture of Go Nagai waving back at me. Read basically the "First success and controversies" section. At this point, I was like, "What the hell, lemme read about Devilman while I'm at it."

I read the plot section, to see what the hell the story was really about, which eventually lead into the manga's ending: Devilman/Akira's "girlfriend" is killed by a human horde, he finds her dismembered body, and then he goes off to fight satan, where the story concludes with the world blowing up and Devilman being defeated.

o_O

This in turn lead to a half-assed search where I wanted to find scans of these moments, but gave up when I magically stumbled into TV Tropes and spent most of the night reading stupid tropes, one of which lead me to this.... interesting YouTube clip:

Damn you, mecha!

Crackdown 2

This sequel makes me sad. I can't believe this game got good reviews on other websites.

Anyway, now that I got all these reviews out of the way, I can spend more time with Zelda.

Thought the main menu/final stage music was catchy, though. However, it sounds better within the game, since it's matching up with the action on-screen:

Title: Ocarina of Time is turning me into one dumb motherf... airy boy
Posted: July 15, 2010 (06:41 PM)
I had to look at a faq three times over the simpliest things so far:

1) Finding Link's first sword.
2) The gravekeeper's whereabouts.
3) A key in the Forest Temple (it was in the first room...)

I can't believe I'm having such a hard time figuring things out in this game, considering I've solved tougher puzzles in other 3D advetures. It still manages to be better than Mario 64, though.

Just in case!

Edit: I forgot to uncheck the box. Now I feel like a whore. XD

Anyway, I never intended to write a review for this when I came back for a revisit. Funny how that all changed halfway through playing it...

Metal Slug XX

I'm actually glad I held off reviewing this when it first came out, because I would have had a completely different opinion on it. When I finally decided to review it, I thought it would be best to play through all the games on Anthology first, to get a better impression on where XX stands. To think, I was so close to claiming it was better than MS6 in a review.

This was actually the same situation I was in with Mega Man 10. I had a clouded impression of the game, since I couldn't remember if similar things happened in past games, whether they were better then, and exactly which ones, too. And I wasn't exactly in the mood to play through 9 Mega Man games, so I passed on reviewing it.

Title: The new Contra Hard Corps game has me very worried

Brief Footage

I'm not digging the art style, which looks very Guilty Gear-ish. I know the developer for the game is Arc System Works, but cmon, they could have used a different style. It just comes off being lazy. Also, the action looks very weak, and I'm hoping that it's just because this is the start of the game. And one more thing: life bar?! They better take that junk out before the game gets released.

Deadly Premonition

On a side note, I lost my completed save data for the game when I went back to check something without using the revisit option. Apparently, the game has short term memory, because it clearly forgot that I turned off autosave a few minutes earlier. So yeah, all that card-collecting, side quest work (for an achievement) went down the drain...

Title: I want to like Deadly Premonition, but I'm having a hard time doing so
Posted: June 06, 2010 (05:16 PM)
It's such a quirky game, very much in line with the source material it's clearly based on, but the actual play mechanics is bugging the crap out of me. I'm not going into detail about it, since I might do a review, but, this game does some things right, but it also does a bunch of things wrong. I could actually do a review of it now, because I have a feeling things won't change dramatically over the course of the game's story, but I actually want to complete the whole thing before making any final judgement. Shame, too, because this could have been a great steal at $20.

Here's a very early cutscene from the game, right as Agent York arrives in town:

Konami Classics Vol. 1

Konami Classics Vol. 2

I'm still trying to figure out if this was a train wreck or a success. My original intention was to only write a review for Vol. 1, but thanks to a goof, I realized I somehow wrote a review describing both Volumes. I noticed this the second I finished writing it, too. Sucks, because I thought the original review came out pretty well.

So after noticing this, I ultimately decided to just write reviews for both games. I took out segments from the original review, edited them a bit, then placed them in the right reviews, next to newly-written paragraphs. And whenever I thought I was finished with both, I always somehow found something that didn't sound right or thought of something that should have been included. I just wanted to get my point across without sounding like some lunatic, which was pretty hard to do. I eventually settled with the versions you're seeing now, which I dub as the "kind" versions of the reviews.

Also, these are the first two HG-exclusive reviews I've done in a very long time. I don't even know if I still have other exclusive reviews up. I remember my Ninja Gaiden review being one for awhile, but I took the exclusiveness out of that a little later. I made it a habit to always post reviews both on GameFAQs and HonestGamers, but I started getting tired of it. I wanted to start a few reviews back, but I figured I would finish the Ace Combat reviews before doing it.
