Activision announced today via press release that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD will be grinding over to the "leading consoles'" digital markets. The mega publisher promised to take the series back to its roots with the Robomodo-developed HD reboot.
“We’re going back to the core of what made the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games so popular, while leveraging today’s console power and online capabilities,” said Tony Hawk in the press release. “We've updated many elements to reflect today’s skateboarding scene as well. Long-time fans of the series will appreciate the huge amount of polished content at a very low price."
That low price will be around $15, according to Activision. A release date, however, was left unannounced.
Originally released in 1999 for Sony's PlayStation, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater became a pretty big gaming phenomenon, arguably through the series' first three to five games. The series jumped the shark in 2009 with Tony Hawk RIDE, which took controls out of gamers' hands and placed them on top of a skateboard peripheral instead. RIDE bombed commercially and critically, with its Metacritic ratings currently in the 40s. The game was followed by last year's Tony Hawk SHRED, another peripheral-based game that didn't fare much better, averaging Metacritic scores in the 50s and also tanking sales-wise.
It's good to hear Activision is taking the series back to its roots, especially during a time when gamers are looking to go back and play some of their older, HDified favorites. Here's hoping that THPS HD is a fun, nostalgic ride. No, not that RIDE.
