Today sees the release of Super Mario 3D Land in Japan, and it comes with an unexpected surprise: a brand new (mandatory to play the game) firmware update.
Sticking the game card in a Japanese 3DS and trying to launch the game prompts the user to update their firmware to v2.2.0-4. While not as meaty and drastic as the major update promised for later this month, this update does bring one or two handy new features. It adds a button to the 3DS friends list to allow you to automatically launch whatever game they're playing and join them for some multiplayer play. It also rearranges your friends list so that online friends are at the beginning of the list.
Like all firmware updates, this one also adds flash cart-blocking anti piracy protections. This does mean, of course, that people who use flash carts won't be able to play Super Mario 3D Land without rendering their flash carts useless, at least for a little while.
