Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today that its shipped 4.6 million copies of Batman: Arkham City, the critically acclaimed sequel to 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum, in its first week at retail. The game launched last Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Of those 4.6 million copies, two million have been sold to consumers, according to a report on the LA Times website. It wouldn't be a stretch to say those two million buyers are enjoying the game, as reviews for Arkham City have been stellar; the game's currently enjoying a 95 rating on Metacritic. Of course, you could also check out our review if you don't want to take anyone else's word for it.

With two million already sold, Arkham City is on a fast track toward surpassing the 4.3 million copies its predecessor sold. Warner Bros. and Rocksteady Studios, the game’s developer, are more than happy about this.

"The true test for any game is what the players think and we have been thrilled by their reaction to Batman: Arkham City,” said Sefton Hill, a game director at Rocksteady, in a press release.

We'll keep monitoring how well Arkham City performs throughout the coming weeks and months, as more triple-A titles like Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3, Modern Warfare 3 and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword make their way to retail.

I can't imagine that WBIE is especially concerned about the disparity between sales and units shipped, either. This is the kind of game that's going to do huge business in the weeks to come, given the glowing reviews and the general interest teens and adults have in all things Batman. It'll be interesting to see where sales are at another two months from now!
