Nicalis has made good on its threat and released Blade Strangers to retail. $39.99 USD will allow you to purchase the physical or digital version on Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4, or a digital version on Steam.

Developed by Studio Saizensen in Japan, Blade Strangers includes characters from numerous indie games. There are Quote and Curly Brace (from Cave Story+), Isaac (from The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+), Solange, Ali, Liongate and Master T (from Code of Princess EX) and Kawase, Noko and Emiko (from the Umihara Kawase series). Also included as guest stars are Shovel Knight and Gunvolt. Two all-new characters have joined the fray, as well: Lina and Helen.

Blade Strangers is a standard one-on-one fighting game, with a streamlined four-button scheme to allow newcomers to thrive while still leaving veterans free to worry about all the advanced stuff that is beyond noobs like me. Game mods on offer include offline Story, Arcade, Versus, Challenge and Survival events, while online offers a variety of modes, leaderboards and extra features.

Though some may feel $39.99 is a lot to pay for an untested fighting franchise, Nicalis is doing what it can to remove some of the sting. If you purchase launch copies of the physical editions, you'll get to enjoy reversible box art, an instruction manual (yes, in 2018) and one of two different PVC character straps (depicting either Solange or Kawase, depending on your luck). How does that sound?
