Dynamic stages are also returning, and you'll see one of them on the Gamescom 2018 stage.

Koei Tecmo today confirmed the return of two favorite fighters for the next installment in the long-running Dead or Alive franchise. Leifang and Hitomi will both be playable when the game arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC sometime next year.

Leifang, who is one of my personal favorites, is also known as "the T'ai Chi Ch'uan Genius." I'm not sure who calls her that, exactly, but I know the press release wouldn't lie to me. She is good at counters and parries, particularly with some impressive holds.

Hitomi, also known as "The Fist of Innocence," is 20 years old and of mixed German and Japanese descent. She uses karate. Her speed, power and surprisingly long reach make her quite the force in the battle arena.

Speaking of arenas, you should expect dynamic new ones in Dead or Alive 6, as has become the trend in recent years. One such stage is "Forbidden Fortune," which takes place on the deck of a pirate ship. Bones and gold spritz things up nicely. A Kraken monster is also on hand, to serve as a natural threat of sorts that should keep battles between the two human players chaotic.

Leifang, Hitomi and the new stage will all be guests of honor in Hall 9, #B011-C010 at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. That exposition is being held from August 21 through 25, and you'll likely see news and video circulating on the Internet during that busy period. For now, though, you can check out the new trailer embedded above.

Hmm. I'm sure I'm wrong, but from that tiny clip, I'm seeing DoA5LR with some new outfits on the girls, which is disappointing. I expected more.

And yet... my body is ready.

I don't believe the game arrives until 2019, so it still has time to look prettier and to get more ambitious in terms of design. However, the final product may wind up exactly as you fear. I think fighting games have reached a point where--at least with current hardware--they're unlikely to look much better in ways that draw attention to themselves. And a lot of developers don't have the resources to push hard against those barriers, unless someone like Sony or Microsoft is paying them to do so. Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja aren't currently in that position with Dead or Alive 6, as far as I know.

Yeah, that's a shame.

But more importantly: what the hell are you still doing up?

I stay up most nights until somewhere between 12 and 1. I'm just usually reading. Tomorrow, my wife and I don't have to be to work until a little later than normal, so I'll probably write another 2 or 3 news articles before reading a bit and going to bed. Gotta make the most of whatever time I have away from ye olde day job!
